False Enders

David Wright's picture

I do like a song with a false end, not heard this for a while, but it contains a slight teaser at the end. Any other false enders?

Traffic's Hole In My Shoe

In some version or another.

And Go Wild In The Country too, has little drum roll at the end that always used to catch me out.

I rise to the challenge...

It'll be hard to beat this one...

Pigs Messy Ending

Good ones, I believe Suede's We Are The Pigs has a fade in at the end as well?

Yes!

I was thinking about this just this morning

Husker Du

From their (alas) barely remembered final album, 'Ice Cold Ice' has a gradual fade-out on the refrain.....and then the last power chord kicks in.

Nothing to add except:

Top Choice!

Dr Hook & the Medicine Show

used to do that a lot, particularly on album tracks. It would end then suddenly start again, or a band member would throw in a side comment after the track.

Small Faces

There's definitely a version of Afterglow that fades back in. IIRC it's only the single version, which also omits the daft intro and crashes straight in.

Also - the Jam with Down in the Tube Station at Midnight, which fades back in on the album version. And Bruce Foxton did a proper stop-start false ending on Freak.

Slip and Slide

by Medicine Head.

An irresitible JJ Cale style shuffle.

You think its all done then after 3 beats it starts again. The first false ending I'd heard and thought it ever so clever.

One I've mentioned before

but this makes it one of my favourite things ever, especially the bass in the part after the false fade, which comes in after around 5.20. This alone makes it the single music thing I'd have on a desert island.

I have a slightly evil* streak.

When I worked in local radio, I used to present the "What's On" guides. I'd usually pick a bed with a false end to catch out one particular presenter.

So, every day at 10.30, you could tune in and hear something like this...

Me: "...and that's the guide on BBC Radio Cleveland!"
Music: "ba ba ba BA!" (apparently ends)

Alan: "Thanks Hannah! Now on the rest of the show we've got..."
Music: "BA BA BA BA BAAAA BAAAA BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

Alan: "Thanks Hannah."
Me: *laughs self into mischievous puddle*

*possibly more accurately, a slightly unprofessional streak.

Radio Cleveland?

Oh go on, which presenter?

0

Alan Wright.

I don't think he's at the station any more, this was a good 13 years ago. It's not even called Radio Cleveland these days...

No

It's BBC Tees now, and I only vaguely remember hearing Alan Wright. He's not at Tees now, but it's not that long since he left to do other stuff, like this...

Still, Bob Fischer's good of an evening. Or will be until the Local Radio Review turns local radio into little more than a crappy syndication service :(

Faces

Stay With Me
So nearly has a defined ending, and the band just keep going

unlike Black Sabbath - Hole In The Sky which just stops mid-riff

'Suffragette City' has a great false ending.
