Extraordinary how potent cheap music is

Doing some driving around the Scottish highlands this weekend, I got to listen to Radio 1 quite a bit. It struck me how rather thrilling a lot of UK Top 40 music actually is and much of it is of the grime/urban variety. The production is chunky and sounds great on the radio; it's not sugary old nonsense either.

I'm thinking of transatlantic success story Taio Cruz and 'Break My Heart':

And current chart botherers Roll Deep, Magnetic Man, DJ Fresh, Tinchy Strider etc make bloody good pop hits. It strikes me that these rather imaginative pop tracks will have a bit of permanence while N Dubz and others just don't quite cut it.

A golden age of UK pop?

Never thought I'd see the day

when I would be defending N-Dubz, but I thought their song 'Number 1' was pretty good - however it features Tinchy Stryder [or is it Tinchy Stryder featuring N-Dubz? I Don't know, but that's ok, I don't need to know]
Plus, the girl is well nice.

Oh and also I wanted to agree with you, a lot of it is tip top pop

Number 1 is great (it's a 'feat. N-Dubz' thing though - the other N-Dubz tracks I've heard are a bit ordinary)

(I shall resist repeating the utterly filthy Popbitch joke about N-Dubz from a couple of weeks ago...)

Dirty Picture

Taio Cruz with Kesha is my single of the year so far. With a 15 month son and lots of sleepless nights the music channel is often on. He loves music, and preferably with a lot of bass and beats. I've listened to more chart music this past year than I have for over 20 years probably and I'm loving it.

It seems I'm not alone.

It seems I'm not alone. *genuinely surprised*
