expect the unexpected

Sheev's picture

Did you know - well, of course you did, you lot know everything - that Sandie Shaw - shoe avoiding sixties songstress and mother figure to Morrisey - covered The Zep back in the day? Perhaps unexpectedly too, it is very good

You define/decide what might constitute *unexpected* but what other such and like items lurk in the bustling hedgerows of pop-rock?

Lesley Gore does AC/DC

More SS info

Not a musical observation but I've always found it hard to get my head round the fact that Sandie Shaw is younger than Debbie Harry. Somehow it just doesn't seem right.

Sits oddly I agree

In a similar vein, I never expected to be only a tad younger than the President of the USA. How did that happen?

Very unexpected and utterly delightful musical excerpts above.

Is Wichita Linesman by REM unexpecetd? Travis doing The Weight is - and again - defying expectation - is good.

Nice twist

Unexpectedly, perhaps apocryphally, Iceland is self-sufficient in pineapples

0
Sheev | 4 April 2009 - 10:31am

Thats because

its a supermarket

0
Molesworth | 6 April 2009 - 11:30pm

To these ears

the riff is - as Muddy plays it - the same as sunshine of your love - non? Unexpected that

Sheev | 4 April 2009 - 6:30pm

Iron Man Vs Yes

I don't think anyone could have predicted this

And if that isn't Olias of Accrington himself on BVs, I will eat my ceremonial prog rock wizard hat

Rather enjoyed that -

Rather enjoyed that - looking for a You Tube of my favourite Anderson solo track Shaker Loops - a tune by John Adams.

Gosh,

that's rather lovely.

I would never have guessed

Would have said it was Peter Gabriel. It's my favourite track of the week.

Bomb The Bass "Say A Little Prayer"

I've always loved this version - cool electro-hop with soul:

I only wish i could post

a clip of the magical moment when gary numan and leo sayer did 'on broadway', both unexpected and extremely funny

More Led Zep

This time by the Fab Four. Maybe.

0

Even the B-52's had a crack at it!

Not really

0
Cookieboy | 5 April 2009 - 7:29pm

That is strangely wonderful

and has made my day :-)

0

Rock Lobsters

Very enjoyable - but it is the Rock Lobsters, a B52's tribute band. It is the real Ralf Harris on the same album though.

Sam Fiddian | 16 April 2009 - 4:40am

The first?

I read somwhere - maybe even on Sandie's 'Reviewing The Situation' album sleeve notes? - that her Zep cover was the FIRST ever Zep cover version recorded. This begs the question, and refines the search, who recorded the FIRST EVER cover version of other acts who went on to mega-stardom? Who did the first ever Kinks cover? Stones cover? Bowie cover? etc etc?

0
kcgrady | 5 April 2009 - 3:12am

Err...

Kinks: Hermans Hermits did Dandy - was that the first?

Stones: Marianne Faithfull - As Tears Go By?

Bowie: Billy Fury - Silly Boy Blue?

0
Paolo Meccano | 5 April 2009 - 9:43am

Cardigans

doing Sabbath Bloody Sabbath anyone?

0

Radiohead

Well, I didn't expect this. It's god though. Thom Yorke seems to read a meaning into the lyrics not unlike Creep:

0
Sven Garlic | 5 April 2009 - 9:59am

What's totally unexpected

is that Radiohead have a sense of humour...

0
Sheev | 5 April 2009 - 11:23am

Well, they do in fact

But you wouldn't know it from their music of course. I like Radiohead but saying it's god is overstating it a bit, it's good I mean!

0
Sven Garlic | 5 April 2009 - 11:33am

Although

I did hear someone describe Thom Yorke as a cult. I think.

0
Sheev | 5 April 2009 - 11:43am

That's a good one.

Quite amusing actually. Not that I agree with the sentiment. Poor old Thom. Not sure what he's done to deserve such contempt from certain quarters.

0
Sven Garlic | 5 April 2009 - 6:45pm

Surely,

it's only a minority who think like that?

0
Sheev | 5 April 2009 - 7:59pm

Well, that certainly was unexpected and

rather wonderful.

0
Sven Garlic | 5 April 2009 - 8:21pm

Kate Bush - Delius

She performed this in the studio on the Russell Harty show (complete with "Delius" in wheelchair) for the benefit of an impossibly old guest who knew Delius very well. To say he was bemused at the end would be an understatement.

0
Austin | 5 April 2009 - 12:02pm

The Blessed Kate

I'm bemused as well by that. But beguiled too as I often am with all things Kate. She's the epitome of those girls you like at school/college who are "acting" in some Brecht adaptation or other. It's terrible. Comical. But you try to like it and not laugh. Because you like her and you want her to like you.

Unexpectedly good version of Running Up that Hill by Placebo, though.

0
Sheev | 5 April 2009 - 1:24pm

This thread

is hugely enjoyable.

0
SirTerence | 5 April 2009 - 6:41pm

Alienation anyone?

Talking about "acting" in some Brecht adapatation or other...

0
Sheev | 5 April 2009 - 7:36pm

Now this was unexpected

I always hated this song until I heard this mashup.

0
Cookieboy | 5 April 2009 - 8:26pm

sorry, couldn't resist...
