Exeter - hotel, pub, restaurant?
Posted by Bigsby on 16 September 2009 - 10:44pm.
Strange request, but I feel like I can trust the Massive's judgement on most matters, so what are the recommendations for staying and eating in Exeter? Taking my daughter down there this weekend to check out the university and the all-important nightlife.

from dusk till dawn
the exeter branch of 'the titty twister'
really great mexican food but bring your own garlic
Oh yes
It's where I grew up so it might have changed a bit
The Imperial is that rare thing - a great Wetherspoon pub and quite stunning.
Barcelona Hotel is really good for lunch.
There are lots of lovely places to eat and drink on the Cathedral Green.
The Cavern Club is where I spent most of my teenage years - a basement club with live bands every night. Timepiece is a great nightclub with outdoor space, but the queue can get massive, so good to get there early.
I'd stay away from the Quayside on a Saturday night as it can get a bit punchy.
A trip to St James Park to see the mighty Exeter City is surely a must
Abode hotel
Abode hotel http://www.abodehotels.co.uk/exeter/overlooking the green is very nice. They also have a decent restaurant.
Hmm... is the Timepiece still going?
That used to be the trendy 'indie' club. With cake. But then that was over 25 years ago…
Hotel Barcelona
is sadly shut for refurbishment, or else that would be the place to stay...excellent. Don't forget Exeter now has a Fopp. The Cavern or the Phoenix arts centre usually has something on.
Exeter is no Manchester/Leeds when it comes to live music, so beware, but having said that the Uni is very good.
My wife and I spent a very enjoyable year there in 05, and have often thought of moving back there for good, sure your daughter will love it
