Entertainment For Lively Minds
Everything Must Go (maybe).
We're having a garage sale tomorrow morning so I'm just taking a break from sorting through the five ton of tat that has to go. The GLW asked if I'll be selling all that "stuff" in my office and out in the garage. By "stuff" she means the piles of Mojos, Uncuts, Words and the boxes of vinyl and CDs that seem to grow at an alarming rate. I grudgingly agreed to go through it all and promised to ditch whatever I didn't want. First box of vinyl I open .... Glen Campbell's Greatest Hits. Well, that can't go, can it? Look a bit further and there's a mint condition, unopened copy of a pretty rare (ish) Neutral Milk Hotel picture disc single. There's a stack of old reggae 7s, a few early Stereophonics singles and tucked inside I Fought The Law is a signed set-list from a mid-90s gig Sonny Curtis did at the Weavers in London. Oh, and there's the obligatory copy of Frampton Comes Alive. This is what I found in the first two minutes. Delve a bit deeper and I find a ticket from a Nina Simone concert at Ronnie Scott's. A signed copy of a Honey Boy Edwards album. A collection of Joe Tex singles I'd forgotten about. Mojo #1. The lyric poster from Deep Purple's Machine Head (album nowhere to be seen - so far). An ELP bootleg. Two copies of the Clash's first album. Various Slade singles (probably the first vinyl I ever bought). A picture of me and Jeff Tweedy. Pillows and Prayers. A signed pic of Emmylou Harris ( "Sweet dreams. Love Emmy") and a tape of Mary Costello's last ever show on GLR.
None of it's going.
Even the Stereophonics stuff.
Maybe.
You just can't. Can you?

I think the key phrase here is
"The GLW asked..."
Mine didn't, I was told! :-(
Two copies of the Clash's first album?
You don't need two copies of the same album.
Keep everything else though, obviously.
But
what if I lose one?
Do you keep them in the same place?
Sometime in the future... "Where are my two copies of The Clash's first album???"
I did
Couple of weekends ago, all the stuff we'd been putting aside for a major boot sale. CDs, DVDs, memorabilia, kitchenalia, clothes, shoes, books, etc. I sold the best bits on eBay and the rest at the car boot for buttons. £405.34 worth of buttons.
You can't keep everything forever.
Keep the Vinyl
if it's in good nick, it'll hold it's value and possibly appreciate.
I tend not to keep old magazines, no point as I'd never look at them and they don't have much resale value. Some years ago I Threw out a huge chest full of NME, Select etc. I survived!
I need to offload a lot of my vinyl
but it's a daunting task and I want it to go somewhere a) that it's appreciated and b) I would like to make the best buck off it so I can reinvest in a nice guitar or whatever.
It just sits under the bed and in a lock up and I have been promising to do it for three years.
Any advice peeps?
more details please
What sorts of music are featured in said vinyl collection?
Are you looking to shift the whole lot in one go, or in stages?
Whereabouts are you?
ta
Old Magazines
I also have a huge collection of music mags, mainly Word, Mojo, Uncut and Q, including the first editions. Also a couple of dozen NME's and Melody Makers from the late 70's I'm coming under pressure to offload them to 'make more space', and realistically I know she's right. I know I can't possibly sit down and read them all again, just as I could never listen to my music collection in my lifetime, but I am still reluctant to just throw them away. I've decided to keep some and dispose of the rest. I would ideally like to make some money from selling them, but it appears from a quick look at e-bay that they are not sought after items anymore. So, a couple of questions....are any of them collectable ? Do any of you out there want any to plug a gap in your collection ? Would charity shops appreciate them ?
What part of the
country are you in?
North West of
North West of England....about 5 miles from Lancaster. 5 minutes drive from junction 34 of the M6.
mostly harmless
Been thru this myself so here's my $0.02
Not much money lurking there I'm afraid. The 70s-era inkies (NME, MM etc) might generally fetch a couple of quid a pop, a bit more if they have big names on the cover or perhaps are early 70s (eg glam era) vintage. Obviously they need to be complete and in reasonable nick. And there's considerable effort involved in selling them separately on eBay for example.
The magazines have no resale value, I'd recommend donate them to charity shop or keen readers.
Chez Stimpy...
Vinyl went 10 years or more ago
CDs went 5 years ago. Any I buy/freebies get ripped and taken to charity shop
Books are bought, read, and in 90% of cases taken to charity shop
Magazines are bought, read and are taken to hospital, doctors, etc to be left in waiting room
It's all 'stuff' and clutter...
Oh dear.
I love stuff and clutter me. Whole room full of it. I like listening to music but I like seeing the box it came in too.
And arranging it in rows.
Then re-arranging it a few months later.
And I like it when one track reminds me of another off a different album and I have to go and spend 15 minutes trying to find it.
( Did I mention the fact that I've no interest in owning an ipod? )
No car boot sale here anytime soon.
Not just me then
who revels in 'stuff and clutter' and positively looks forward to the bi-monthly audit & re-arrangement
And, no I haven't got an iPod either (nor do I want one)
Then again, I haven't even got a mobile phone
I found this! I found this!
Sorting through boxes and I found this on 12". It's one of my favourite singles of like all time... ever.
Sorry... just rather excited as I thought it'd gone years back.
If it's one of your favourite singles ever..
Then what was it doing languishing at the back of a box in your garage.
It's all a load of sorry, sad old wank. Bin the lot. You'll feel better for it.
I can't understand hoarders.
