Every Town Should Have One

Mr Drayton's picture

Household Shocks

Back in 1980 a group of mates got this album together. A compilation of bands in and around the Scunthorpe area. Living in London I had the honour of storing all the albums on the floor of my bedsit until some one managed to persuade his dad to come down and pick them up. This one features Carmel pre- Bad Day chart action.
It still sounds pretty good today, I found this one for 120 Euros via a German website - I haven't bought it, I've got my own copy.
There seemed to be a rash of albums like this around this time, so, was the music scene in your town captured for eternity in scratched blue vinyl?

"So You Think We're All Farmers?"

I remember this Ippo-based compilation, so decided to try and Google it to refresh my memory as to who was actually on it, which threw up this little gem. A lovely vignette from one of rock's foot soldiers. http://www.danielwherrett.com/biog.htm

I'd just like to say...

that that is a really fine album cover.

Yes...

This could be a good strand. There were loads of these in the 80s - I remember a Brighton one, a Bristol one (Avon Calling?), seemed like there was a new one every month. There was also Hicks From The Sticks, which I think covered the North. These compilations often contain early outings by "well known" people.

e.g. for Liverpool there were a few, including...
Street to Street: The Bunnymen; The Id (containing both of OMD)
Ways To Wear Coats: Half Man Half Biscuit
A Secret Liverpool: The La's
Never heard of the La's - I bought it for St Helen's fabulous Riotous Hues! (who?)

Hicks From The Sticks

I've got that one! Groups from all over the North (Blackpool to Nottingham, actually), including the following:

Section 25
The Expelaires
Stranger Than Fiction
I'm So Hollow
ClockDVA
They Must Be Russians
Medium Medium
Nightmares in Wax
Wah! Heat

I've also got 'Touchdown', which I think is focused on East Anglia (with The Higsons and The Farmers Boys) But also includes such superstars as:

Popular Voice
Dislocation Dance
Design For Living, and
Pinski Zoo.

Time to dust off the turntable...

Nightmares In Wax

I think that is Pete Burns pre Dead Or Alive.
