Esbjörn Svensson

Handsome.P.Wonderful's picture

I've just read in the Guardian that Esbjörn Svensson has died after injuries received during scuba diving. Now I know that The Word is a rock magazine, and the Esbjörn Svennson Trio were a jazz combo, but I think it's generally accepted that, if there's a Venn diagram with three circles: rock, jazz and good, EST are right there in the middle where the three intersect.

I suspect that, like many other middle-aged ex-hippies or ex-punks, music is my drug of choice and I am constantly on the look out for that next high. EST gave me that high for a couple of albums and, if the other-wordly doodlings of Radiohead or Sigur Ros are your thing, then I would strongly encourage you to have a listen to them ('Viaticum' is a good start). I for one will miss Esbjörn Svensson very much.

Terrible

I'm genuinely shocked and knew nothing of this. He was such an inventive player and made some great music with EST. How very, very sad.
