eMusic - Dont forget to cancel your subscription ........

Hot Cider's picture

I just cancelled my subscription for the third time, and within 8 days got offered yet another 75 free downloads to resubscribe (for any subscription-plan).

And before you ask, you dont lose the music you already have downloaded.

Its the way forward.

Beware

Beware that if you're on a good plan you won't get that rate again when you re-signup.
My main account gives me 90 tracks a month for £12.78 but if I stopped and signed up again the best rate I could get would be 75 tracks a month for £14.99 and I know from experience that they don't always offer a big incentive to re-sign as soon as you cancel.

Ditto

£6.39 for 40 vs £11.99 for 50 (even for me that's a no brainer)

Fair point......

But I found that by having a break for a few months then resubscribing - even if the price has gone up a bit - still works out better value with the freebies. Suppose it depends how much of eMusics stuff you want.

Gasp! Splutter!

A few months off!! Having been a member since 2001 I couldn't imagine doing that. Even with my 90 downloads a month I have a huge backlog list to get through.

I want to know.....

I have been a diligent 40 tracks a month for 5 years, but it is getting harder and harder to find stuff I would like or do like. I daren't risk 75 free tracks as I don't actually feel I could do them justice. Don't get me wrong, I have downloaded tons of good 'uns, but it is getting harder. I consider myself pretty eclectic of taste, albeit predominantly country/folk/reggae/world/blues/jazz, rather than straight ahead rock, tho' I have lashings of it from 40 years of aquisition. Is it because I have too many other concurrent sources of supply? A genuine problem, where is the good stuff I haven't already got?

Harumph

I cancelled my subscription about three months ago and I have not been offered anything free.

Forgive my Ignorance

but am not that familiar with e music, and all this download subscription malarky. For your subs you are allowed to download so many tracks, but does this include brand new releases or is it just more of your back cat stuff? Is there also a good wide range of music on e music?
Reason i ask is that it all seems to be too good to be true, 90 tracks for 13quid, that equates roughly to less than £2 for an average lp, unbelievable value.

Emusic is great

But don't expect much new stuff or indeed anything from a major label, it's an indie label only zone. There's a lot of rubbish on it but there's a lot of really truly great stuff as well, and the way it is designed really helps you to discover new music. I just cancelled my account because I had too much music to deal with and I was trying to save money, I kind of regret it now.

I'm an addict - you can trust me!

I download mainly new stuff - sometimes emusic gets releases before anyone else and often they arrive the same time as other places but mainly there will be a delay of about a month. What you won't find is everything - Emusic deals only with Independent labels so no Sony, Warners or EMI releases.

I would estimate that 70% of my 2008 emusic downloads were actually released in 2008 (or the last few months of 2007).

What you won't get is 90 tracks for 13 quid because that plan is only available to people that used to be on the old unlimited plan which, just to annoy anyone that didn't already know, was when we used to pay 10 dollars a month for as many tracks/albums as we want. I used to download at least one album a day!

Have a look at the catalogue here:
http://www.emusic.com/browse/all.html
(don't just go to www.emusic.com cos it's hard for the newcomer to find their way in without signing up!

The perfect way to broaden your musical horizons

Of the 250 odd albums I've downloaded over the last 3 years a good 90% I wouldn't have dreamt of buying at full price (couldn't have afforded it either.) Taking a punt on an album is no risk at all if it sets you back less than a cup of coffee. My musical life has been enriched no end. The Word's CDs are generally a very good way in given that usually at least half the acts are to be found on emusic.
