Emmylou Harris - Hard Bargain
Posted by Adman on 1 May 2011 - 12:36pm.
Emmylou sings Ron Sexsmith's 'Hard Bargain' live.
Title track from her new record, available on Spotify to check out. Just been listening this morning. Beautiful stuff, as always.
I like this one too, I guess it might be about Gram...
Fantastic sounding record. She's still got it.

I saw Ron Sexsmith live last night...
...and just before launching into "Hard Bargain", he said "I hadn't put this in the set-list for this tour. But then Emmylou Harris decided to cover it and I thought, 'Well, she knows a thing or two'. So here it is."
Great!
I'm off to see him in Leamington Spa in June...
How was the gig?
I loved it. Fourth time I've seen him live.
He's playing with a four-piece band this time (well, five-piece including Ron), I really liked the way they fleshed out his sound. For some of the concert, though, it was just Ron on his own, or just with his pianist, which was pretty special too.
However, both my husband and my friend Anthony thought that although it was great, they definitely preferred the sections (and indeed the previous tours) when it was just Ron on his own. However, that's only a minor criticism because he really was wonderful.
Support act, Jim White however... I love the odd song of his, but a whole set is too depressing for me. Similarly, I own one of his albums and I just can't listen to it the whole way through, it's too much.
EDIT: Actually, you might prefer the lovely Twangothan's take on Jim White, he enjoyed it much more than I did. http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/jim-white
Sounds great...
I saw him with a bass player and a drummer about 11 years ago. It was excellent. He was supported by Mark Nevin (ex-Fairground Attraction) that night, and he was equally brilliant.
Band every time
This was our fourth time seeing him too, but we both prefer Ron with band.
He was really great after a slightly nervous start (a few flat notes and general hesitancy) but once he warmed up it was really great.
Mrs P got fed up with Jim White and walked out.
I felt sorry for a couple just in front who left at 10. I'm assuming it was because they had a train to catch rather than they didn't like it. That meant they only saw about 35 minutes and he played for another hour.
