Election 74 on BBC Parliament

Andrew F's picture

BBC Parliament are re-running their 'Election 74' coverage at the moment - both on TV and streamed via the BBC website - and it's fascinating viewing. It's like stepping into an episode of 'Life on Mars' - one of the studio team lit up a cigar and had a sip of what looked very much like a whisky and coke a few minutes ago, and an OB reporter has just manhandled a housewife to try and get her to turn towards the camera. Whilst wearing a big camel coat.

Leader of a Krautrock Love Cult look-alike now being interviewed by Robin Day! He needs a big amulet

Don't tell me the result - I'm going to watch the highlights

It's a shame they lost the full version of The Clangers' 1974 election special, "Vote for Froglet!":

It was Froglet versus the Soup Dragon, but apathy won the day - voter turn-out was pathetic.

Can I just say this is the 1st time I've appeared on television?

Brian Walden MP getting a pasting from Robin Day
Clearly a pack of cigars by Bob McKensie's glasses case on his desk
a young boy playing David Dimbleby outside number 10
Alistair Burnett sober
Graphs made by Lesley Judd rather than CGI

Its fab!

Elected

This is what Burnett, Day and Dimbleby would have rocked to at the post-show party - number one in that week was Suzi Quatro's "Devil Gate Drive":

Absolutely brilliant

Alistair Burnett just described one of the (female) candidates as "one of Labour's 'more decorative' candidates".

Maggie just interviewed by Robin Day, toeing the party line and sticking up for Edward Heath.

Lots of references to 'the mining seats'. Where did they go?

This is amazing

First mention of Ken Clarke - a new MP in Nottingham Rushcliffe
and turnout over 80%

Almost feels like ancient history sometimes though, doesn't it?

Bob Maxwell

still waiting for the result (spoiler - he's a thieving c**t)
Clement Freud at the count (Henry the dog not present)
Man from Gallup with voice of Peter Cook know it all character

60% described as 'disappointingly low' turnout

Intriguing

Interesting how leaders are pretty abrupt and grumpy, not too bothered about their image.

Also, no women involved and public looking mostly pretty smartly dressed in outside broadcasts with men either in trilbys or with really long hair. Lot more posh accents than now too.

a great bit

where a man in the street is asked his opinion, then his wife was asked and she immediately turned to her husband to ask what her opinion was.

Its the Pub Landlord's golden age in a nutshell
