Ed Harcourt

Cornwall Guy's picture
When:
Friday 23rd July 2010
Where:
The Round Room, Port Eliot Festival, St Germans, Cornwall
Comments:
When he played the Cabaret Tent at 2.00pm, I thought Ed Harcourt was certainly good enough to justify a CD and hear him again in the Round Room. A little later, I saw the man himself & explained that my only appreciation of his work so far had been Open Book which was given away with Word 19. "I haven't played that for about 3 years. If I can remember the words, I'll give it ago" he replied. Which he proceeded to do. I must confess Ed's soaring, unmiked voice and beautiful piano playing resulted in eye leakage. The Round Room in Port Eliot has a mural by Robert Lenkiewicz with portraits of sundry estate characters staring at you from all angles. I felt transported back - this is how the fortunate heard music before electricity, with the local Earl inviting a few friends round for the evening. I thanked him afterwards and told him that it was one of the most memorable concerts I had experienced. I got a hug in return and a photo of him and my son.
The Audience:
Nobody alarming, The Lovely Jude Rogers next to my son, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall on the floor at the front, master of all (musically) surveys Louis Eliot by the door encouraging another song with hand gestures.
Food & Drink:
I enjoyed a curry before hand, polishing off my son's Coke prior to going in.
It Made Me Think...:
...later on that my new BFF may have buggered the rest of the weekend as I went on to 4 different performers who all lasted 2 songs before I slipped out with "Well they're not Ed Harcourt in the Round Room." If anyone comes close, I'll let you know.
