Echo and the Bunnymen

Andy's picture

I went to the Roundhouse recently to see Echo and the Bunnymen.

A fantastic night.....inlcuded The Doors song "People are strange" in the set.

Everyone should see the Bunnymen, if they have the chance.

More prominent billing at festivals next summer would be deserved on this performance.

I've mentioned on here before

I spent my 18th birthday watching EATB at The Albert Hall in 1983 (see video) they were wonderful then. It's good to hear that time and the awful loss of Pete de Freitas hasn't dimmed them.

I saw them in an exotic location

in Brisbane Australia - the Cloudland Ballroom in 1981 or 1982. It was a sweltering night but still there were many devoted fans sporting great coats and big boots. The band were great - it was when they were infatuated with Coppola's 'Apocalypse Now'. The venue had a sprung wooden floor and you literally bounced up and down with the crowd. (The term moshing didn't exist at that time). Sadly, I think Cloudland was demolished some years ago.

They've still got it

I saw them very recently and had low expectations but in fact they were marvellous. Was particularly impressed to see Mac blatantly defy the smoking ban and had a gasper on the go for most of the set...well what are they gonna do manhandle him off stage in the middle of the gig? If it ever comes to court I guess he could try the loophole about it being a theatrical device essential to the integrity of the performance.
Anyway they were tremendous, did plenty of 'old' and Will Sergeant is a legend.

I saw them tonight

Or at least Will, because he was DJing tonight in Liverpool. He's such a superbly nice guy, he will talk you through the nonsense you are asking for.

I do like Mac as well, but I don't think he will me as accommodating.

Not true on the Mac front

Met him on a couple of occasions way back when he was doing his first solo tour, interviewed him for a fanzine and ended up following the bulk of the tour. Really nice bloke, always willing to talk, and, when I got stranded in Norwich after one gig, he made sure I had a room at their hotel. Top chap!

Cool!

Mac's a great guy. I interviewed him a few years ago for the big issue, and we got along great. Except all the way through I was thinking 'this is only a 500 word piece, can't you shut up now'.

Of course there was no chance once was he was off on one, and I remember discussing the relative merits of the 'Grey Album'.

I never did do a proper transcript of that interview. Ahem.

Transcribing is

undoubtedly the worst part of journalism. Still, better than working for a living isn't it?

Off To See Them At Christmas...

...at one of the 3 gigs they're doing in Liverpool - their live album (single disc version) is one of my all time favourite ablums.

Apple Mac (slight return)

Photobucket
my adoration of them waned over the years but this was a very special gig and the current band are tight but loose

I've seen then a few times...

in the last couple of years, and they've always been good. And Ocean Rain is still my all-time favourite album...and this is still one of the greatest songs ever:

Great band

Great look. Great tunes. Great live act. Great memories.

Silly name though. Rather like Prefab Sprout - prevented true greatness being conferred.

"We asked a hundred people what's the coolest name for a pop group?"

Velvet Underground? Ding. Echo and the Bunnymen...? Our survey said...urhn urhn
