Posted by Twangothan on 13 January 2010 - 1:43pm.
Anyone know of a good DVD audio to MP3 ripper? I have loads of concerts on DVD which I'd like tobe able to listen to sans telly. There are loads of ones out there - I treid a few free ones that don't work - any recommendations welcome! BTW - I use a PC.

Check VideoHelp.com
I have done this before on a PC many years ago but I can't remember exactly how I did it - I think it was using software from Slysoft (www.slysoft.com) who make the AnyDVD software to strip of the copy protection - it may have been CloneDVD as I have a copy in some old archive files (I hnow use a Mac so not used any of this software for years).
Best bet is to check videohelp.com which has guides for almost any conversion you can think of. I think what you are looking for is here....

From the guides listed, this one looks promising, although I can't vouch for it.....

I haven't tried this....
....but if you're prepared to take the time to do it in real time, you could simply play the DVD on your pc and capture the sound using Audacity. Save it as .mp3 then use the same software to put in track markers. You could then tag the individual files.
Are these bootleg DVDs (eg from tv shows etc.) or shop bought? I'd imagine if they are shop bought that some will be available on CD therefore probably available on the 'net.
Good idea
They are all legit DVDs - the one in question is the Lynyrd Skynyrd Whistle Test concert from the early 70s - the first time many of us heard Freebird, since no one had heard of them then - which was an extra in the remastered "Gimmee back my bullets" - a classic (for me anyway). I could capture it using the soundcard grabber quite easily then chop it up.
The alternative looks quite tricky though might give better results. I shall try "easy" first!
This is the one I use
Free Studio Manager.
All manner of MP3, Video, DVD converters and editors. Works fine and regularly updated

I have this already
...as it happens - I can't see an option to rip audio from DVD though.
Two Stage Process
Did this recently, and it worked OK
1) Use 'DVD Video Converter' - rip DVD to .avi or .mp4 (personally I'd use .avi)
2) Use 'Video to MP3 Converter'
I don't remember having any problems, or needing to do anything else
Handbrake

Is ronseal ... can't go wrong with it
The one I mention in this post
worked for me. It only works for a month before you need to pay for it. I assume you can just redownload it once a month.

use audacity play the dvd
and select record source and then chop it up and export as mp3 it's easy and free.
Are you running Vista or XP?
I can use Audacity on my XP machine, but it won't work on my Dell which runs Vista. I'm not sure if it's confined to Dell or not, but I think the ability to record from the onboard soundcard was turned off on Vista as an anti piracy measure
Funnily enough
I am having great difficulty getting it to install on a Dell with XP - I tried once before and gave up. I have a music PC with Wavelab on it so I shall try on there and give up on Audacity. There's clearly a compatibility problem somewhere. Its very presence on the PC seems to bring everything to a grinding halt!
I have a 2009 dell vista laptop
and runs audacity no problem. version audacity 1.2.6 if that helps.
Just tried this on audacity
didn't have a music dvd so here's aclip of the duke in the Longest day.
I cued the dvd and minimised the window.
then opened audacity click "edit" and then "preferences" on the "Audio I/O" tab choose "recording" drop down choose "rec. play back".
start the audio recording and then click play on dvd programe.
