Duckworth Lewis Method nominated for Irish equivalent of Mercury Music Prize
WORD favourites Duckworth Lewis Method have been nominated for the Choice Music Prize which, in a nutshell, is the Irish equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize. The winning album will earn its creators a nice 10,000 euro and be crowned Irish Album of the Year 2009. The DLM nod comes for their excellent self-titled album, which was released in Ireland on 1969 Records.
It's the second time Neil Hannon has been nominated. Indeed, he won it in 2006 for the excellent "Victory for the Comic Muse", something which still irks an awful lot of people who post on Choice founder Jim Carroll's blog http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/
Anyway, the shortlist for Choice Music Prize is (in alphabetical order):
And So I Watch You From Afar “And So I Watch You From Afar” (Smalltown America)
Bell X1 “Blue Lights On The Runway” (BellyUp)
Codes “Trees Dream in Algebra” (EMI)
Adrian Crowley “Season of the Sparks” (Chemikal Underground)
Dark Room Notes “We Love You Dark Matter” (Gonzo)
The Duckworth Lewis Method “The Duckworth Lewis Method” (1969/Divine Comedy Records)
Julie Feeney “Pages” (Mittens)
Valerie Francis “Slow Dynamo” (VF)
Laura Izibor “Let The Truth Be Told” (Atlantic)
The Swell Season “Strict Joy” (Plateau)
The ceremony is a live event, at which all of the nominees are invited to perform (if they're inclined to, David Holmes didn't bother last year, some just can't make it on the night). It takes place in Vicar Street in Dublin on Wednesday March 3rd. Good luck to the DLM!

David Turpin
... woz robbed.
The DC record was a worthy winner
and so will the DLM be this year.
Dunno
I'm thinking it's between And So I Watch You From Afar, Adrian Crowley and Valerie Francis (none of which I've actually heard, but they're the ones causing the buzz on the blogs).
Davids
Yeah, quite surprised David Turpin didn't make it. The two albums of his I've heard are class.
David Kitt is the most obvious omission IMO. His latest, "The Nightsaver", is an incredible album.
New
Was listening to Paul McClune talking about these awards on Tony Fenton's show on today fm this afternoon and he didn't rate it at all. Tony Fenton did however and he is a judge on the panel. So might be worth a bet.
Tony Fenton is a top DJ by the way. I never heard of him till I found Today fm on few years ago. Rarely plays a bad tune or toon as he calls them
Thanks guys.....
I'm SO proud to finally be on here. I'd just like to announce that even though the 'Choice Music Prize' is an honour to be nominated for (though Paul Balloon is a 'Neil' hater - Today FM reference earlier) we have been nominated for a 'Meteor Award' for best album (Meteors being the Irish equivalent of The Brits/Grammys) up against Snow Patrol and U2 (ever heard of them??).
You can also vote for us there as it is a public vote (fancy helping me win something to put on my bedsit's window-sill??) - http://meteormusicawards.meteor.ie/nominees/category/best-irish-album/
If U.K geezers can't vote well just spread the word as they say. Anyway I'm just happy to be here.....!!

Greetings from Co Roscommon, Thomas...
You got the Meteor vote from this jury. Best Irish sports album ever! Until the Saw Doctors write an entire album about Hurling or The Thrills do one about rugby!
And another vote from Co. Wexford, Mr. Duckworth...
... /Mr. Walsh but the question is, are you boys performing at either award shows?
The Saw Doctors doing a hurling concept album!
Brilliant! Anyway , DLM gonna get the vote of this London-domiciled Limerickman. Cracking stuff.
OMG
OMG there's a proper pop star in the forum. Stay calm....
Good luck with the awards, DLM!
(Actually, if Fraser is around, I just remembered that I haven't received my copy of the Duckworth Lewis cd as promised when I began my sub. At whom can I point an accusatory finger?)
Oh dear
Drop an e-mail to Nicole in the Word office with your details and she'll look after you.
Cheers!
I might even vote for 'em if it's any good (joke - I know it's great...)
new
I just tried to vote but keep saying my mobile number was invalid. I asume that its because Im in the North. What's that about then ?
Thanks everyone.....
for being so kind AND trying to vote (Yep, I think you have to be an Irish Republic resident to vote, sorry). We will be performing 2 or 3 songs with the band at the 'Choice Music Prize' ceremony. That particular award tries to get all the acts nominated to play. If only 6 or 7 acts can turn up we may very well play 3 or 4 songs but either way we will be there to perform on the night. At present we are joint favourites to win this particular award though favourite's rarely win to be honest, but it's all good fun and new for me I must say (though not for the want of 'Pugwash' trying :-) )
If you're interested, myself and Neil have been handed our dream job as Radio DJ's by our national broadcaster RTE. Follow the link below to check it out (and you can listen back to our first show, we even have our dear friend Matt Berry doing the 'stings' for the show. That's radio speak..eh, eh see how professional wot i think I'm am..)

The show is called THE DUCKWORTH LEWIS RADIOPHONIC BLUNDERBUS..and is between 5 and 7PM on Sunday evenings. (The web-page says 17.00 - 18.00 but that's to be fixed). Please e-mail in because we read EVERYTHING and can do requests if possible. I'm playing needledrops (played The Kinks - 'Till death us do part from vinyl in the first show!!) and all kinds of rarely played beauties, so is Lewis of course, so please listen in if you can, the first show was a huge success.
Finally Andy Partridge told me on the phone yesterday that the D.L.M album was awarded Number 2 album of the year in the new issue? WOOOOWWWW.....we'll be announcing that on our sites shortly, we're so humbled David, Mark and all the crew. I'm getting on a mad bus to the leafy Dublin suburb of Tallaght tomorrow to buy my copy (and the new VIZ). I'll be teary-eyed reading it on the way back and teary-eyed NOT because of the plumes of hash-smoke flowing down from the upstairs back seats of the 77a bus!!
Love - Thomas (Duckworth).xx
Good on 2FM
The new controller seems to have his head screwed on. Listened in on a real-life wireless last week and thought the show was great. I was under the impression (thanks in no small part to the typically poor Irish media coverage in advance of the first show) that it was a one-off. Great to hear that it's not.
All the new 2fm dude needs to do now is boot Gerry Ryan out the door and quicker than you can say 'hairy cornflake' I might actually listen to the station again...
Well said HL...
... and I really enjoyed the show. Had heard nothing about it until Tom Walsh posted here. Will tune in to-morrow night.
Thanks guys..
..I'm going to squeeze some Bowie at The Beeb (68 session) in the show later. I've just decided and thought I'd give yiz' all a scoop!!
