"Drop Dead Gorgeous" Songs
Posted by chrisf on 15 May 2010 - 5:35pm.
Its late Saturday night here and winding down after a busy day with 10,000 Maniacs "In My Tribe"....
Is there any track that is as beautiful as "Verdi Cries".......?
I can only find a solo version on YouTube from Jonathan Ross, but it does the job
What other "drop dead gorgeous" tracks are there - those that you just have to sit quietly and listen to......

I know I've said this before
but for me the most beautiful song ever is Run of the mill, by George Harrison off All things must pass.
Hairs standing up on arms, euphoric feeling levitating me from chair, etc.
It's the perfect pop song for me.

I do like Nat and the Maniacs (even saw them on the Tribe tour) but I was instantly reminded of Sandy Denny so I did a YaChoob search for what I was after and it comes to me that's it's a bit of 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes' and 'Listen, Listen'. Not exactly what I was after, maybe one of the more folky Massif can help.
but thankee for the link, it is beautiful and has def. enriched my weekend :D
edit:
just dawned on me where I ken that song from - I recorded 10,000 Maniacs off an 'In Concert' from the Beeb years ago. I feel a bit of a dick now.
getting auld sucks!
Might this be what ye seek young sir?
Sandy - The North Star Grassman & The Ravens
"A Case of You" - Joni Mitchell
Restless Farewell
Bob Dylan, the final track from The Times They Are A Changin
Northern Sky by Nick Drake
False, False by Cara Dillon
2 if I may
This melts my heart....
...although I fully agree about Verdi Cries
Luxuriate in this
Kate Bush cover...
I do hope
we shall be referring to Kate as 'Da Bomb' from now on
nope, thought not
It could be the new HJH
e.g. Does anyone love DB's Hounds of Love?
Thank you
Love lovely love this. Good to be reminded of it, still.
Golden Age - KD Tunstall
Original by Beck but think I prefer KDT's take
2 more
that will probably represent a "Marmite Moment" for the Massive:
You know
how I feel about that particular Sylvian song.
I just...
..mis-read that David Sylvian track as "Before the Bun fight". I `d pay good money to hear that!
I'm listening to 'Naturally' by J.J. Cale...
and from it here's Magnolia. Lovely.
Edit: What an amazing album this is! I haven't played it for a while and I'm stunned by its brilliance. One of the best sounding records I've ever heard...
Sakamoto & Sylvian - Forbidden Colours
Excellent choice
Just when you think the song has reached its plateau of loveliness, this pops up:
"I go walking in circles while doubting the very ground beneath me"
I love everything about that, particularly the use of the word "very". As someone said earlier, hairs stand on neck, heartbeat quickens sightly.
Thirded
A wonderful piece of music with great lyrics.
The Way That It Falls
Another one
A song about the death of PC Stephen Carroll in Northern Ireland
It wouldn't be the Word with DB
I think this is an improvement on the original recording, clearly suiting the older, deeper voiced, (and laryngitis-affected) Bowie.
From the old days, I'll always stop and listen to this. I think it's the oboes.
Jimmy Webb
has a new album out at the end of June and it features a song called Where Words End. The muse has not departed.
Our Kate
a national treasure if ever there was one
Couldn't agree more
I spent an agreeable week on a corporate roadshow driving between venues when Stuart Maconie was championing this on the Radio 2 drivetime show
Isfahan -
Isfahan - Ellington/Strayhorn. End of..
I've fallen in love again...
Tori is underated and seemingly forgotten
This was one of my favourites.
Forgotten? Not by me!
At risk of turning this into a Tori appreciation society...
there are dozens of contenders but I'll choose this:
Also, $1,000 Dollar Wedding by Gram Parsons.
Can think of three straight away
The first track of Trembling Bells's debut album 'Carbeth'. The song is called 'I Listed All the Velvet Lessons' - I thought it was a real statement of intent to kick off you first record with something like this. Can't find it on YouTube so here's Spotify:
http://open.spotify.com/track/5uLJDL7IcnTw2NtEPPWNad
Mekons 'Ghosts of American Astronauts' - Sally Timms' voice!
And 'Rakim' by Dead Can Dance (especially when the rhythm finally kicks in at 2:07).
One album, one great single
Annie Lennox RUINED this song when she covered it.
Stevie Wonder - Ribbon in the Sky
Luscious
well that would be my call on Dave Gilmour's guitar sound at the start of Breathe, no YaChoob as ye aw ken it
don'tcha?
What, no Cocteau Twins?
I saw 10,000 Manics on the Tribe tour at Nottingham - I think it was the Theatre Royal. It was s tough gig - the crowd took a while to warm up. Like the Weather was the song that cracked them, I recall! Anyway, after an encore or two, Natalie came on, sat at the piano and did Verdi Cries. It was sublime. I seem to remember one of those hushes before the applause started - but that might be me romantacising it all a bit...
And very good call on This Woman's Work, Maxwell nails something there, but I prefer the original.
So, have the version of the song that introduced me to the Cocteau Twins. I had it on VHS, and I literally wore the tape out. I love this track. there are probably better CT tracks, but this one does it for me every time...
Been up most of the night.
This helps.
When the stars go blue
He always has moments of genius and this is one of them
This Ryan gem
has that effect of stopping you in your tracks
"I Taught Myself How to Grow"
Yet another gorgeous gem from Ryan
There are so many to choose from.
The Wondermints
...so much more than Brian Wilson's backing band.
Two from Ol' Smoothiechops
beauty
adore ryan adams and these
Mazzy Star
My second choice
I'm at the Dawkins end of the scale when it comes to religion, but this is such a beautiful rendition by Sufjan Stevens:
Band of Horses
Window Blues for me is perfection in gorgeousness.
A lovely pair of Sprouts
Love is Green
A couple, off the top of my head...
Also, now that...
...the curse of advertising has worn off:
It's really a lovely little song.
Iron and Wine
Never fails to get me crying into my Merlot....
Jonathan Jeremiah - See
This And this (obligatory
This
And this (obligatory RT mention)
and finally
not an obvious choice
but although Billy Bragg's voice is not for everyone "The Man In The Iron Mask" always sends a shiver down my spine. Understated and so sad.
Further to Natalie Merchant - "My Skin" from Ophelia
Lone Justice - Wheels
Maria McKee at her most gorgeous
Duke Ellington & John Coltrane
In a sentimental Mood.
On flight from London to Melbourne -
- could not sleep.
- too nackered to watch movies
- too cranky to listen to most music.
- found this on the Jazz selection
- played it endlessly and fell in love with it.
- Enjoy:
I'll try this again
Four DDG
It seems the proverbial cat is out of Mr. Hepworth's bag about Lucinda Williams more recent output, but this, this is round about where love affairs began, hearts were broken, and the like:
Another gem, pretty much overlooked these days (worthy of a Nina Simone cover, too):
The Collins performance has the look of the Leonard Bernstein TV special where Surf's Up debuted, but I've always preferred the LP version:
I'd say this would be my most recent discovery of a DDG song. Those showbiz kids never get a fair shake, but this suggests Harper possesses his old man's gifts, if not Artie's delivery:
