Dogtown and the Z Boys

Not the dramatised 'Lords of Dogwtown' - but the original stunning indie documentary about the seventies Californian skateboard scene. Incredible filming, footage and photography. Delicously edited and with an impeccable soundtrack including
Led Zep' and Hendrix to Bowie album tracks and The Stooges

Here's the Japanese trailer

The 'Classic Album' series DVDS are highly recommended too, my wife works in the Media department of a local school, where they regularly show the 'Making of Dark Side of the Moon' to the media classes

If nobody else is going to say it, I am

Can't they take it home and watch it on their own time?
We're always hearing how the curriculum is so full they can't fit one more thing in it. We even have universities inventing a "reading week" during which students all over the country are supposedly busy doing the one thing they're supposed to go to university for. Unscientific research I've conducted into it suggests they're actually in bed.

0
David Hepworth | 30 January 2008 - 11:05am

How could you suggest such a thing?!

The very idea that Britain's fine young men and women would take adavantage of their educational opportunities in such a way!

Oh hold on a minute... I had a reading week when I was at university and spent it in the pub.

Right you are then.

Patrick Crowther | 30 January 2008 - 11:12am

Pre digital age..

We used to have the school TV wheeled in for educational programmes in a classroom environment. It's just an updated version of that.

They only show about 30 minute selections to illustrate certain editing, mixing techniques. I would guess the Floyd DVD is used as there's a good chance parents may have the album at home for further research.

Don't get me started

Don't get me started on the education system.
My daughter's choosing her GCSE (O Levels in real money) options at the moment: top of her list is Digital Photography. As far as I'm concerned that barely passes muster as a hobby, never mind an academic discipline.
Think I'm going to go and and enrol as a "mature student". Subject: Shouting At The Telly

Richard Lowe | 30 January 2008 - 12:02pm

That's a classic

It's a way of offering photography without having to have a dark room or any of that other troublesome stuff.

0
David Hepworth | 30 January 2008 - 12:13pm

But you do have to learn Photoshop...

May I recommend as an insomnia cure Martin Evening's seminal (but incredibly tedious) tome 'Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers'. You'll be off in dreamland before you can say 'pixel' to a goose.

0
Patrick Crowther | 30 January 2008 - 12:22pm

Dark Room?

Dark Room? Snark Room. Get with it, Grandad. There's plenty of lavishly-appointed IT suites involved, plus Photoshop and what have you.
And maybe if I did a bit more home-tutoring she could point to France on a map. Or multiply 6 by 7 without having to thing it through and check "online".

0
Richard Lowe | 30 January 2008 - 12:52pm

the good old days

We could always go back to old "Skool" comps like the one I went to cracked lino, the rank smell of cabbage, hand basins smashed off at the wall, casual racism and homophobia, even more casual violence from kids and teachers a like, one computer (in total) and our only day trip in several years a trip down a coal mine! We had darkroom but it was where they put the bad lads to quieten them down a bit.

0
Chris G | 30 January 2008 - 1:04pm

Are you seriously suggesting

Are you seriously suggesting that "casual homophobia" doesn't exist in schools anymore because of the wonders of "progressive" education policies? You must live in Cloud-cuckoo Land. Or somewhere where there are no teenage boys. Here's the news: kids call cartoons of drink "gay" these days, never mind other people. But fewer of them can spell the word.

0
Richard Lowe | 30 January 2008 - 3:52pm

sorry "casual homophobia" by

sorry "casual homophobia" by the teachers.Schools now a days are much better than they use to be. My brothers a teacher and even though lifes not straight forward for them (and at times grim I imagine) he has openly gay pupils something that would have been unheard of 25 years ago. I just get a bit tired of everyone knocking schools, yes our kids are important but teachers must be the only profession who have everyone else telling what to do all the time. Journos get huffy if non professionsal write the odd blog or contribute to wikipedia imagine the uproar if every single thing they did was held up to minute inspection. (particulalry by people who haven't stepped inside a new room in there life). I thought it was excessive of everyone to go off on (sub-daily mail) rants about eductaion when a simple list of films that children should watch was asked for. But let's not fall out about this and put on a copy of the goonies. :)

Reading week

At my university, reading week simply means writing week. There's always one just before the assignment deadline: as if that's a good time to read...

My life as a dog Lasse

My life as a dog Lasse Hallestrum, the red balloon, the magnificent seven, the vikings, the goonies, the time bandits, when the wind blows, little women the 1940's version, You need more left field stuff as kids already see loads of vids. Oh and of course gregory girls and Kes (so they can see that modern schools aren't that bad after all)!

Education, education, education

In my new capacity as head of cultural studies for a secondary school I started designing next year's curriculum. The criteria for the inclusion of lessons were simple:

Nothing tiresomely difficult for students.
No marking required from staff.
Overseas jollies encouraged.

We're starting each term with a "Meditating Week", which students will be allowed to pursue in the comfort of their own homes.

Parts of each subsequent week will be devoted to the study of modern cultural phenomena such as "Selling graffiti to suckers", "Concealing a blade in everyday clothing" and "Understanding the rules of Government Benefits".

On Friday afternoons, older students (14+) will able to attend a variety of nearby retail licenced premises, in order to meet as diverse a cross-section of the general public as possible for cultural exchange purposes. These lessons may last until the early hours of Saturday morning.

I'd welcome suggestions for other activities we might include.

What about some shane meadows "a home for romeo brass" is really good. Or some film noir may be a bit too grown up (although not gory or explicit). You seem to have only left wing documentaries how about some balance? although can't hink of any right wong ones ooops!
