'Don't Mention The Levellers! I Mentioned Them Once, But I think I Got Away With It!'
Posted by itfc1959 on 16 September 2011 - 11:52pm.
And so here I am, on the Boudicca Express taking the Iceni Line back home and away from That London and a most excellent and enjoyable Mingle. It was my first, you know.
Londonium isn't that bad. It"s positively and gloriously mental. The event itself went like a charm and I would like to thank everyone there for making it so, and a big one to Hannah for organizing and hostessing and generally making sure that no-one was left feeling, er, left out.
I've come away with a pile of CDs and if anyone would like to mail me I would be only too happy to send off a Stones DVD, once the iMac's fixed. Cheers to all for making such a stirling effort and for being so friendly. We're not a bad bunch at all, you know.

Pleasure to meet you!
Thanks for explaining your login... Us non sporty folks have no chance sometimes...
Self-explanatory
and for us sporty folks, what exactly is a 'ganglesprocket'?
It's bullshit!!
Imagine the scenario...
your oven won't work no matter how much you bugger about with it and you can't find the manual. Nothing left except to phone the kitchen appliance repair man. He arrives, immediately spots that someone has mistakenly left the timer switch on auto(so in fact, there's nothing wrong with the oven at all). Nevertheless, said repair man removes back from cooker and buggers around for half an hour before telling you that it's now fixed. "What was wrong with it?" you ask. "Oh, the dangle pin had seperated from the gizintae...I've fitted a new ganglesprocket and it's as good as new now...£150 please" was the reply.
Apologies for jumpin' in and no offence to Mr ganglesprocket.
Oh.
I was always lead to believe that it was cross-polarity on the trumpets along with the glib-shaft being misaligned. Which would need a reverse-spline tee-clip to repair. Which, of course, has to go on back order but he'll have it by next Wednesday but he'll have to bring his mate 'cos you need two of you 'cos you've got to offer it up blind 'cos your machine's backed up on the rebate, see? Don't know who put it in for you..
It's a pleasure
Lovely to meet you, glad you made the big journey. Hopefully see you at another one!
Good to meet you...
I recall we chatted about Mick Mills, The Pioneers and ginger dreadlocks - sorry that I lost it at that point!
LOL!
As the young people like to say.
An apology
What can I say? I have to out myself as the guilty party here. We were having a perfectly civil conversation, when you mentioned the Levellers. The last syllable was barely past your soft palate when some evil gremlin forced me to blurt out "Oh, they're one of the worst bands ever aren't they?" or words to that effect. I hope at least that watching me try to winch myself out of that chasm provided some amusement...
Rosbif!
Please don't ever feel that you need to apologise (to me, of all people) for expressing an honestly held belief. I know that some loathe them with a vengeance and I also know that they inspire a maniacal following in those that get them.
Far, far better for us all to say what we really think and feel, I say. And I would add that you are a far too decent a sort to take offence at, if that helps.
Fraser doesn't like them either.
Not quite true
I like one song.
Indeed. One Way, Wasn't It?
And then you accused me of being a dope-smoking crusty (retired). Well! I resemble that remark!
Actually, at the next mingle we could theme it "All Our Yesterdays" and bring one photo of ourselves, in our pomp. And bring a CD of our soundtrack for those long-forgotten days.
And in true Clique-y fashion, I'm trying to track down that chap we discussed re. an interesting story and will email Mark accordingly.
Dope-smoking crusty
Ahh. Yes. Sorry about that.
One thing: don't do any legwork on your story before contacting Mark - it could be that he doesn't think the idea has legs at all, so I'd hate you to waste any time on it before knowing one way or the other.
Unlike the dog...
...he wouldn't want to string you along...
Fraser! Don't Apologise!
It's nice to think that a bit of me is still detectably antisocial and that I haven't become totally respectable. Or something.
Here's the Levellers doing One Way, about a thousand years ago, when they were great.
Tell me, chaps...
...do those Levellers still attract unclean looking people with dogs on string? I'm afraid I'm one of those people who have a - probably disproportionate, cos I've hardly ever heard them - massive dislike of the Levellers and anything 'crusty'. But the dogs on string thing seems like the biggest, stupidest affectation ever perpetrated...
I refer my friend to the comments I made some months ago
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/the-wonderstuff-the-levellers
Fair enough, WeirdAcronymMeister!
...I'm afraid, though, the very though of a Wonderstuff/Leveller double bill sends a shiver down my spine - brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! :-)
The Wonder Stuff
Great band.
Lost it when The Bass Thing left for NYC and they went all fiddly dee but the first two records are up there with anyone's first two outings.
Like Six Dog said
The Wonder Stuff - great band. Looking forward to seeing them play "Never Loved Elvis" later this year
Can we have an amnesty
and come clean on the bands we REALLY liked when we were young as opposed to the ones that our older, more well informed selves would want the younger version to have liked...??
I'll start the ball rolling...as much as I love The 13th Floor Elevators and The Doors I never saw them live, I was only about 2 years old when they were playing in their prime.
I have however, willingly attended concerts by the Anti-Nowhere League, King Kurt and Alien Sex Fiend!
Amnesty continued
I have seen Level 42 in concert on at least 10 occasions
Yikes...!
I've opened up a can of worms here...
I really liked Level 42.
I saw them at Glastonbury 86. They played the Sunday night and the look of horror on the faces on their normoid fans who turned up for the evening is something I shall treasure for ever.
Good job there's an amnesty, YT...
...or you'd be in hot water.
Amnesty
UB40 - saw them three times, paid for out of my own pocket. In my defence yr'honour, I had no idea they'd turn into an atrocious lazy soft covers band
You're right, Six...
...it's certainly food for thought.
Atrocious Lazy Soft
TMFTL.
Duran Duran
Really liked them up until and including Seven, and then The Wedding Album. God knows why. But I do think he's a very good bass player.
Absolutely.
Was listening to the Rio album t'other day and was mightily impressed by both John Taylor's bass lines (pretty intricate) and Andy Taylor's guitar work. Good band, needed a better singer!
Overlooked muso's due to the pretty boy look?
There's one of them there "classic Albums" things
on Rio, and there's a lovely acoustic guitar part that AT did for Save A Prayer that for some reason didn't make it onto the record.
Not a huge Duran fan...
...but they are overlooked as musicians, I think. Perhaps because getting a female following, where, as in literature and films, female fans are often seen as less serious and inferior.
Ned's Atomic Dustbin
Loved them in my teeange years...and Carter USM
Nothing wrong with Ned's
Most fun I've had a recent gig was the Neds reunion show last year.
Never thought I'd get to hear Grey Cell Green or Kill Your Television live again. Great night out.
Self-denied amnesty
As it's not a band I liked. I saw Simply Red, but just the once (1988-ish). I was young, it was a free ticket and a very, very good looking woman had asked me to go with her. However, just before they took to the stage, I realised the true horror that awaited. So I told my friend that I was going to sleep, and asked her to wake me up if they played "Open Up The Red Box." And that is precisely what happened. She didn't mind, she understood!
Simply Red...
...I saw Simply Red in about 87/88 too. I still like the first couple of LPs in parts in my memory (although not heard either of them for years and years). I do remember the gig only livening up during the funkier numbers, though.
Picture Book
Well worth another listen. Very good record.
