I don't believe the (internet) Hype

Dr Volume's picture

Just finished watching Jools, and noticed Lana Del Ray was appearing. She went down a storm, carefully framed with Peter Gabriel's bonce nodding sagely along..

She was introduced as "The latest Internet Phenomenon". Not that old chestnut again? (see also Arctic Monkeys and S*ndi Th*m). Isn't all new music principally discovered via the Internet these days? Nobody really believes that this artist casually put some Youtube videos up recorded in her bedroom and magically became an overnight sensation all on her own. Of course not, it's all part of a very carefully orchestrated marketing strategy.

Not that I have a problem with carefully orchestrated marketing strategies, and hats off to 'Team Lana', they've done a cracking job. However the manner of her coming to 'market' is pretty much the model with all new acts these days. In these post-Myspace times it generally goes like this:

  1. The unreleased tracks go up on Youtube/Sound Cloud to test the water.
  2. They get picked up on blogs and sites such like The Quietus or Pitchfork and create 'a buzz in the Blogosphere', no doubt assisted by some old-style marketing behind the scenes.
  3. Maybe get a couple of low key gigs, preferably in Islington or Shoreditch.. the sort that people will later claim: "I swear I was there"
  4. Get the 'ear' of Alexis Petridish or someone on the Guardian and get on the phone to BBC 6 Music ("Hello is that Steve Lamacq..?" click - brrrr etc.)
  5. Wait for just enough steam to build up behind the artist and then put the new single out (including a limited 7" of course), preferably the Monday after appearing on 'Later..' and if you're really clever, Indie record shops will be restricting the single to one per customer (which they are!)
  6. Hey presto everyone is suitably 'stoked' for your debut LP and no doubt there is a place already reserved for you at Latitude 2012, The Big Chill and Bestival. Hurrah!
    1. Not knocking the artist whatsoever (although not my cup of tea), and I think there was some genuine amazement at how quickly her videos took off on Youtube, but surely this 'online' route to global megastardom is the norm these days...I fail to see why the media are seeing this as such a novelty.

I don't

disagree, I was listening to Loose Ends on R4 tonight and heard Jo Hamilton. I liked what I heard so searched her out, the rest of her 'stuff' wasn't to my taste.

cuts both ways?

I don't believe it happens

There was probably a brief moment, but not now. Try and get someone to listen to something you've done and posted online - it's almost impossible. In these cases, I'm sure it's just the PR's attempt at demonstrating authenticity.

does "The latest Internet Phenomenon".

Now quite easy on the eye, did make laugh a little when I saw her on later tottering around in her nurse cratchett uniform that there's rarely an internet buzz about a fat lass. Also is it me or did performance improve from the 1st showing to one on Friday sound a bit more polished and closer to the recorded version seemed. Bit halting and flat previously.

Shoreditch?

I wouldn't dream of leaving Islington Dr!

Hype is nothing new

Even in the "idealistic" sixties Moby Grape were created (and destroyed) by hype. Ten - twenty years ago, the aim of the hype was to be NME's darlings of the week - remember Andrew WK? All that's happened is that the hype has moved to different channels.

I think you're missing

the key part of the Lana Del Rey appeal which is creating such hype.

If you take a look at her, you will come to realise that she is - how shall I put this? - "not ugly".

She's got Google stitched up

Thinking I should check your assertion about her perceived lack of ugliness I started typing her name into Google. After three characters she's about seventh on the suggestion list (just behind Lance Armstrong) and after four she's top, beating Lana Turner into second.

As for the song...

I had my "go on, impress me" face on when I watched the Friday show - and she did impress me. I liked the song, and I like how she delivered it. As far as sounding better than on the live show is concerned, I'd guess that it's not unusual for there to be another take for the longer show; or, on occasion, the Tuesday performance might not be shown at all on Friday.

They're two completely separate shows

The Friday night show is recorded 8-9.30 on Tuesday, they have a break, then go into the 10pm live show. So, even if you see the same song on both Tuesday and Friday shows, it's always two different performances. So, if the Friday one was better than the Tuesday one, it actually means it's the first performance which is better.

I like the song

But this one looked pretty suspect from the get-go.

If you look at the original Guardian profile from earlier in the year
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/may/13/new-band-lana-del-ray

and the various bits about her previous music career as Lizzy Grant.

But I like the song, and I bought it today, so well, I guess it worked. But do I believe she's as manufactured as One Direction? Sure. Does it matter? No.

She's recorded a lot of demos

it says, with "different producers" at the helm! And she's already recorded a song with Guy Chambers?! Hardly raw, untapped talent then is she. Thanks for confirming my suspicions!

As you rightly say though, it boils down to the music and ultimately that is all that matters regardless of whether she's been hawking her acoustic guitar around the pubs and WMCs of Middlesborough for years, or has a team of expert transatlatic PR behind her. The risk the PR take is their strategy backfiring when punters realise this isn't the DIY rags to riches story after all.

She's made a new record with Damon Albarn and Bobby Womack...naturally!

Sandi Thom has a very strong

third album called Merchants and Thieves.

Listen to a few samples before dismissing it as it's an authentically good blues album.
