Don't It Make You Wonder

why Mama Cass didn't end up the same way as Karen Carpenter?
It's always puzzled me you'd let anyone sing about you getting a bit chubby. Is this a more lyrical version of chanting "who eat all the pies?" Lovely song but that line just rankles.

"It's Getting Better" - Mama Cass

Agreed; the lyrics feel more odd when you see them performing it. I'm trying to come up with similar examples and can only think of fat rappers boasting about their obesity.

Danny Baker has called this the best love song of all time:

It is explained

in a terrific documentary which is on Youtube. Here's part 1 of 7 .
Even if, for some bizarre reason, you're not a M+Ps fan, it's watching to drool over Michelle Philips. Still gorgeous in 2005 when the most recent footage was shot.

John Phillips never got on

John Phillips never got on with Mama Cass. Didn't really want her in the group in the first place and resented how important to their sound, and popular with the fans, she became. Any opportunity to belittle her and he'd seize it. When he first showed this lyric to Michelle she thought he was joking.
Cass sang it with gusto though. I think it was a defence mechanism for her. By drawing attention to her weight - sort of celebrating it - she headed any insults or jokes off at the pass.
It did, however, make her very unhappy.
There's a really good biography of Mama Cass called Dream A Little Dream Of Me by Eddi Fiegel. Well worth reading if you're interested in one of the greatest groups ever.
Thanks for the documentary link Gatz. Not seen that before and look forward to tucking in.

I thought

she was better looking than that rake of a lass next to her. Those hippies gits seem to be sexist twonks to a man
