Disembodied title tracks

Moose the Mooche's picture

Hello. I'm new here.

What do all of these albums have in common?

Dodgy - Homegrown
Grace Jones - Living My Life
Pulp - His'n'Hers
Costello - Imperial Bedroom
Gomez - Bring It On
Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Kathryn Williams - Little Black Numbers

They all have title tracks... but they were not included on the original albums.

Come on, there must be loads more of these.

1

off the top of my head

Waiting for the Sun - The doors
World Shut Your Mouth - Julian Cope

Blue Oyster Cult

Rewrote 'Subhuman' and changed its name to 'Blue Oyster Cult' for their 11th album Imaginos, 16 years after their eponymous debut.

Another Elvis one

Almost Blue was on Imperial Bedroom.

0
JohnW | 4 September 2011 - 9:58pm

Houses

Of The Holy by Led Zeppelin

0
Pax Romana | 4 September 2011 - 10:23pm

XTC

had a habit of naming albums after a distinctive lyric off their previous album.

'Nonsuch' gets mentioned in Chalkhills and Children off Oranges and Lemons.

In turn, 'Apple Venus' crops up in Then She Appeared on Nonsuch.

0
thecheshirecat | 4 September 2011 - 10:41pm

And in turn...

... Oranges & Lemons are mentioned on preceding album "Skylarking" (in "Ballad For A Rainy Day")

0
Metal Mickey | 5 September 2011 - 8:50am

Crimso

Did it the opposite way round. The track (instrumental) Starless and Bible Black is on the album of the same name. But the lyric appears on Red which came out later that year.

[Thinks: Can you imagine anyone nowadays bringing out two cracking albums in the same year?]

Showing my age

Sheer Heart Attack is the only one that comes to mind, but I just stepped put of the Aspidistra and everything's a little hazy. But welcome to the ... erm... here, Moose, if I can call you that.

I'm new here too - only a couple of weeks in, and I've been on holiday for a week. It's just not on, is it?

Count Grassi | 4 September 2011 - 10:53pm

Gene - Drawn To The Deep End

Title track ended up as a b-side. Not a bad song but you can see why it didn't make it onto the album.

0
Cadabra | 5 September 2011 - 12:20am

Frank Zappa

The track Absolutely Free was on the following album We're Only In It For The Money

0
mojoworking | 5 September 2011 - 1:29am

Ride

Going Blank Again, was the B-side of Leave them all behind. On the extended version of the CD I think.

paulwright | 5 September 2011 - 8:07am

In the UK

It first appeared on the lovely Twisterella EP.

Which reminds me - Nowhere. Wasn't on the original LP.

0
Moose the Mooche | 11 September 2011 - 10:26pm

Brain Salad Surgery

First appeared on an NME flexidisc, if memory serves...

Paul Waring | 5 September 2011 - 8:16am

Disembodied Title Tracks

May have already appeared on the previous album:

http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/albums-where-title-song-is-on-a-pr...

and I'm not 100% that even this version is the original.

0
TedLoaf | 5 September 2011 - 8:17am

Nic Jones'

album Penguin Eggs has no song of that name on it. But he does sing a (rather good) song of that name on the 'Knaresborough Folk Club' bootleg..
I don't think it appears on any of his official recordings though...(?)

0
cje | 5 September 2011 - 8:31am

The song 'The Little Pot Stove' on Penguin Eggs

contains the line
Salt fish and whalemeat sausage, fresh penguin eggs a treat.
I've not heard the Knaseborough recording so could it be this one given a different title?

hubertrawlinson | 5 September 2011 - 4:16pm

Journey Through The Past

didn't appear on the dreary, unlistenable Neil Young album of the same name, but was instead saved for the dreary, listenable follow up "Time Fades Away".

0
Pax Romana | 5 September 2011 - 9:10am

Kingmaker

Eat Yourself Whole appeared as a single but not on the album of the same name.

0
jimmyshoes01 | 5 September 2011 - 10:27am

More Gomez

High On Liquid Skin doesn't appear on Liquid Skin.

0
kidpresentable | 5 September 2011 - 12:47pm

others

BRMC - Take Them On, On Your Own (b-side)
Elbow - Asleep In The Back (only on album re-release)
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy (EP track)

0
badger_king | 5 September 2011 - 12:48pm

When I bought the album "Psychocandy"

it came with the Some Candy Talking ep included. So, for me, it's on the album.
My man Stephen Ryan, when he was in The Stars Of Heaven, had an album called "Speak Slowly". The debut by his next band The Revenants featured a song of the same name.

STD | 5 September 2011 - 4:51pm

Elbow

Asleep in the Back isn't on Asleep in the Back.

0
Spartacus Mills | 5 September 2011 - 12:49pm

In the lead up to Christmas

there seem to be loads of albums released called 'Greatest' Hits. That aren't.

happy harry | 5 September 2011 - 2:02pm

Auto-strangulation

The Stranglers based an entire album, "The Gospel According To The Meninblack", on the similarly named "Meninblack" from their previous LP.

0
Pax Romana | 5 September 2011 - 2:04pm

Perhaps in an effort to compensate for all of the above

The Creation put a song called "Creation" on their Creation Records debut, whose working title was "Creation".

0
Pax Romana | 5 September 2011 - 2:08pm

Similarly

the b-side of Pet Shop Boys' very first release of West End Girls was called "Pet Shop Boys". They also recently recorded a cover of a song by My Robot Friend, called "We're The Pet Shop Boys".

Also, They Might Be Giants' album "Flood" didn't include a song called "Flood", but it did have one called "They Might Be Giants".

This could be a whole new tangent of this topic - bands who've recorded songs named after themselves.

0
Cadabra | 5 September 2011 - 5:42pm

You can have Black Sabbath and Bad Company for starters...

Both, of course, on albums named for the bands as well.

0
Paul Waring | 5 September 2011 - 6:53pm

Or acts that merely refer to themselves in verse:

such as:

The Human League on "Love Action" ("this is Phil Talking")

Mark E Smith on "How I Wrote Elastic Man" ("the people ask me how I wrote Elastic Man")

Public Enemy on "Public Enemy No. 1 ("Because I'm Public Enemy No. 1")

and inevitably,

Craig David on Everything by Craig David ("Craig Da-vid!")

0
Pax Romana | 5 September 2011 - 8:26pm

Why is the world in love again?

Why are we marching hand in hand?
Why are the ocean levels rising up?
It's a brand new record,
For Nineteen-ninety!
They Might Be Giants' brand new album...
Floooooooooooood!

Theme From Flood, on the album, erm, Flood.

(actually this may be my candidate for things that make me feel old - our sixth form album is 21!?!)

1
pompeygeorge | 5 September 2011 - 8:36pm

"Theme from..."? Pah! Doesn't count.

Or alternatively, I forgot about that one. You decide.

0
Cadabra | 5 September 2011 - 11:25pm

I love that album.

Everytime I hear it, I'm 15 again.

0
Hannah | 6 September 2011 - 11:16am

cf Pax Romana

Comparing those last two posts, there's even a track called 'They Might be Giants' on Flood.

0
thecheshirecat | 6 September 2011 - 7:24pm

And reading my previous post

you'll notice I mentioned that.

0
Cadabra | 7 September 2011 - 7:15pm

Both of these were only b-sides

'Colour By Numbers' by Culture Club
'Kilamanjaro' by The Teardrop Explodes

0
Andrew Harrison | 5 September 2011 - 2:18pm

Jets To Brazil

Their first album was "Orange Rhyming Dictionary" (and is TOTALLY BRILLIANT), but the song of that name is on their second album "Four Cornered Night" (which is QUITE GOOD).

0
maggieloveshopey | 5 September 2011 - 3:02pm

Frank's Wild Years

Tom Waits dedicated a whole album to the spoken word track recorded for Swordfishtrombones album.

Zanti Misfit | 5 September 2011 - 3:09pm

Nice thread

Welcome to the blog, Moose!

0
Hannah | 5 September 2011 - 3:58pm

The moral of the story is...

.. artists often write a song starting with the title. Or they like the title more than they like the song.

What if the White album had been called "What's the New Mary Jane" or better still, "Not Guilty"?

0
Moose the Mooche | 7 September 2011 - 3:56pm

Would You Believe?

Hollies' LP '65.
Track on 'Butterfly' in '67.

0
