Discovered too late....
Is it just me or do I discover people when it is too late to see them live?
I discovered Jeff Buckley the year he died. Elliot Smith too. The publicity surrounding artists when they die always creates new fans, but why can't the industry plug these fantastic talents harder when they are still around? I feel resentful & sad & not getting to see these & many other artists.
Plus, it is their estate, not them, that benefits from me going into a spending frenzy.
So, who do you wish you had seen live? My list of artists before my time is long & could not change anyway, its the ones I missed out on that were around & just not paraded around enough that hacks me off.

I wish I'd seen Amy
I wish I'd seen Amy Winehouse.
Vegas
Sinatra in Vegas with Count Basie, but The Ratpack nowhere to be seen. I'd like to sit at one of those little round tables with a lamp on it, drink Scotch and ice and smoke loads of fags. Chesterfields, probably. I'd even wear a tuxedo and I'd take my late father-in-law if I could.
Ol' Blue Eyes
Back in 1990 I turned down to the chance to roadie at a Frank Sinatra show at Docklands Arena. It would have been one of his last ever UK performances, I guess.
Not exactly the Sands Hotel, and not exactly Sinatra in his prime, but I still regret not doing it.
100 Club
I turned down the offer of a night at the 100 Club to see a new band called The Sex Pistols in 1976. "Who?" I said. "Load of rubbish". And you know what...
what refreshing honesty...
from what i gather, if everybody who claimed they were at the 100 club actually was there, the queue for the toilets would just be ending about now! You're the first person i've come accross who merely claims he 'could have been there'...
Jeff Buckley
Jeff Buckley without a doubt.
I couldda been there...
Jeff Buckley played the Garage in Islington. I think it was a Sunday night. Not one of my favourite venues by a long way and I was probably thinking "Work tomorrow, can't be arsed. Catch him next time".
A favour
Can you let me know if there's anyone good you hear about soon, y'know, just in case I want to see them first?
No Joy
I changed my mind about going to see the Buzzcocks at the De Montford Hall in Leicester in 1978, it was a Monday night and I was knackered. It wasn't the Buzzcocks that I regret missing, it was the support band Joy Division.
Would like to have......
seen Janis Joplin before she croaked it. Would also have loved to see Sandy Denny with Swarbrick/Thompson era Fairports.
Did get to see Ian Dury about 2 months before he died. Wasn't first time I saw him but it was deeply warming to see his voice and his humour were still in tact - what a man!!!
Nico
Almost got to see her at the Gateway in Chester, was sitting on my own in the auditorium for 15 minutes before realising that everyone else already knew she wasn't turning up...
Kirsty McColl
She was doing a gig at Wolverhampton and I kept putting off phoning up for a couple of tickets until it was to late. Said to GLW "We'll see her next time" Unfortunately a speedboat scuppered that plan.
fao skirky
Listening to alot of old stuff at the moment by the godfather of grunge - no intention of saying his name, you know, like 'the Scottish play', I discovered him late but hey, he's still about :o)
Thing is, I went to New Orleans on holiday 1 year before the horrors, and San Diego 1 year before the Californian fires....I'm scared to buy any cd's or book a holiday. Got a few days in Dublin in March if you want to avoid it.
The Smiths
Having passed up the opportunity to see this lot twice, I did get myself into a misunderstanding with someone I was naively out to impress, that led to me to meticulously memorise a bootleg of one of their gigs to make it appear as if I was actually there. Dear oh dear. Still waiting for that inglorious reunion to piss all over their legacy. They're holding out well so far though. Keep it up lads.
Van the Man
Had the chance to see the gig immortalised as "It's Too Late To Stop Now". Didn't yet know about the glory of his live show, so didn't go. Bugger. Did catch him years later in Ipswich, but missed the first half hour, 'cos he started at 7.30 on the dot. Bugger.
