Yes they bloody were!

First album a classic. "All the myths", "When the hoodoo comes". Anything else worth investigating?

For the first few bars

I thought it was a cover of "Got to get you into my Life".

great stuff

I realy liked this band and thought that they should have had at least a couple of hits. They were never deemed 'cool' by the music press, which couldn't have helped their cause.

Diminishing returns

With a name like FreakGene you'd have to be a fan.

First album (Shakespeare Alabama) is terrific, all the way through. Flipped is pretty good and well worth a listen despite being B sides and covers - their version of Memo from Turner a real high point. Trouble was, the 2nd album proper (Decency) was late and IMHO a bit over-produced, and the momentum was lost. Jonathan King championing them probably didn't help. From then on the albums were OK with one or two good tunes but they never really hit the same heights again. IIRC they were from Leicester; can't think of anyone else apart from Aynsley Lister.
