Did anyone buy any albums after watching Glasto?

Remote Control's picture

(as a result of someone's performance - don't mean 'completely unrelated albums bought in the last few days'!) and if so, what?

Jackson Browne

Was there on Saturday to see his fantastic performance on the Pyramid and came home and immediately downloaded at least 6 of his albums (I'm a Napster subscriber so it's all part of the £15 per month).

Also going to get started on The Avett Bros, Toots and the Maytals tonight.

Also used good old ipdl to download all the BBC coverage for later viewing when I feel like it.

This thing is as lifechanging as Sky+.

Jacko for me too

Loved his early stuff when I was at school - centuries ago - particularly Late For The Sky, The Pretender and Running On Emty. I bought 'The Very Best Of' this week at HMV (two for a tenner deal). The first CD is the stuff I prefer, the second has the 80's production which I am not so keen on but there are some nuggets nonetheless - 'The Barricades of Heaven' and 'Sky Blue and Black' f'rinstance.

I have also ordered the double album with David Lyndley 'Love Is Strange' which documents their tour of Spain and sounds lovely from the snippets heard on JB's website.

Speaking of David Lyndley, he of the crazy shirts, fabulous mutton chops and unique slide guitar, I can really recommend El Rayo-X from 1981.

Great compilation, but...

...aside from the cover - horrific - there are tracks that have been 'mucked about with'. Little bit of JB rewriting his past. Minor points, but he's deleted the lyric "for you" from These Days and used a completely different vocal track for the opening few words of Late For The Sky ("the feeling still wasn't right"). But I'm being picky: it's a great compilation, and the song selection on particularly the first CD is perfect.

It's All New To Me

so I wouldn't have noticed but I appreciate the heads up.

I've got that Jackson Browne best of....

....but after watching Glastonbury i'm going to buy some of his albums this weekend when i'm up in Central London. I suspect i'll hit Fopp at some point and see if there's any of his cd's at a reasonable rate.

Jackson Browne

Can I advise you? Buy the first three albums: Jackson Browne (1972)*; For Everyman (1973) and Late For The Sky (1974). Not to say that's the only good stuff, but they're all pretty damn good and an ideal starting point.

*Often wrongly referred to as Saturate Before Using

I'm going to get

I'm going to get The Goldheart Assembly and The Leisure Society albums after watching them. I went looking for them in the Changing Worlds cd stall at the Avalon stage, but they didn't have them.

Two Thumbs Up

You sound like my kind of man. Goldheart Assembly's album is more instantly accesible, but personally I reckon it's worth listening to 'Sleeper' (The Leisure Society) a few times to appreciate the excellence of it; 'twas my favourite album of last year- just ahead of The Decemberists.

This is like

...a friendly version of Amazon's 'other people who liked this bought this' feature.

I'm with you on The Leisure Society - definitely one of, if not THE, best albums of last year. Manages to be both pastoral and poppy, if that's possible. Don't know the Goldheart Assembly but I'm spotifying it as I type.

Not only, but also

I bought Plastic Beach and the family tickets for the Gorillaz gig in Newcastle for September. The pounding they got by the lovies in the press was rather unfair. I thouight that it was a massively ambitious show - and as for the critism concerning the down beat message of the sing a long and the slaughter of whales - doesn't Glasto support Greenpeace? Knobs.

It's a really enjoyable album

and packed with good moments, including this lovely song

Not Glasto But Frank Turner Who Opened For Greenday

...saw he's on the Front cover of Kerrang for some very strange reason as he's more Word territory - the crowd loved him.

Beach House

Sat and watched their set on Saturday, bought three albums when I got home.

At 5am on Friday I heard a DJ play a version of Orange Blossom Special - Spotify helped me ID it as being by the Rosinators. CD purchased.

pocket.calculator | 30 June 2010 - 8:17pm

I already had Plastic Beach...

... but if I hadn't I'd have bought it. Difficult gig for Gorillaz - replacing U2 who would, no doubt, have rolled out all the hits (a la Macca). I wonder if Bono would have gone up in the Massive's estimation if U2 had played, and gone down a storm.

0
Formbyman | 30 June 2010 - 10:24pm

I think the most common phrase

seen on the site would be 'Bono, what a c*nt'.

0
Mr Drayton | 1 July 2010 - 7:03am

I'm convinced U2 would have had a fair few thousand new fans

on the back of it. Speaking as someone who walked into the Manchester LCC ground on a 2005 summer's evening vaguely 'pro' U2 but only really a fan of maybe 4 or 5 tracks, and came out a shellshocked convert. The best 'big gig' i've been to since Depeche Mode at their early 1990s peak. Even as an REM/Cure/Prince/etc fan i can say they wipe the floor with every other arena/stadium band i've ever seen in terms of the way they do what they do live as much as what they're playing. Your proper actual masters of the trade.

Jus sayin.

If you like Jackson Browne

you might like this:

Lots of his songs, with a gospel slant, and some JB vocals.

Sorry to go on and on but if you do like the music then this is interesting:

First heard them on a Word cover CD but glasto was the first chance I've had to see them... they didn't disappoint... great harmonies, very CSNY

Conditions

I bought Conditions by The Temper Trap, & it is excellent.

A pedant writes:

"Did anyone buy any albums after watching Glasto?" Well, yes, I did: the new Crowded House lp, which is a cracker.

"Did anyone buy any albums as a result of watching Glasto?" Not me. (That said, I'm tempted to dig into the Snoop Dog back catalogue but just don't have a clue where to begin.)
