Desperately seeking...

papatracker's picture

Hi Everybody,

I'm trying to find a cover version of James Brown's Papa's Got A Brand New Bag. Its an instrumental version, about 3-4 minutes long, starts off with the guitar chords similar to the original, has a hammond solo, possibly a sax solo. Its really funky, really tight, played by a small band (probably guitar, drums, hammond, sax).

I had this song on a mix tape I got from a black guy outside Camden tube in the late 80s. I think he was a regular feature on the high street, selling mix tapes with type written liner notes. I think the mix was called Hot Peppers.

I'd be so grateful if anyone can tell me if the know who recorded this cover version. I've looked on itunes and as far as I can tell its not on there....

I might make a fool of myself here...

...because I've never actually heard this track, but one of my surviving brain cells claims that Pigbag recorded a track that possibly was named Papa's got a brand new Pigbag...I would guess that if my brain cell is correct, that would probably be a version of James Brown's original.
Also timewise it would fit, and the instruments sound about right.
But the only Pigbag track I remember is Hit the `O´ deck, so this could be completely wrong.
( I'm too lazy to check on YouTube )
EDIT: I did check on YouTube, and NO, it's not that one.
Sounds nothing like James Brown, and now I realise that I have actually heard it before without knowing it.
Sorry, someone else will know it I'm sure.
I'll just put my fools cap on and go to bed, lulled to sleep by the sound of tiny bells...

I'd have said that too, so we're both stupid (possibly)

It was quite a big hit single. It is an instrumental but in my head it goes #Papa has got...a brand new piiig-bag, papa has got...# etc.

Thanks Nick, pretty close, very similar sound. I would say that the version I know is a little 'fatter' in sound, a little slower as well... Will keep looking, Cheers!

Sounds liket the sort of thing which

the James Taylor Quartet would do.

How about

Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto Allstarz? Apparently this got to No 5 in the singles chart. Their version was called "Reach Up (Papa's Got A Brand New Bag)".

Nostalgia

I used to buy tapes like that from Camden and Portobello back in the 90s. I had a great one called 'Organ Thang' which has Call Me Mr Tibbs by Qunicy Jones on it.

Those were the days.

Hi Art, Thanks for your reply. I checked out the Quincy Jones version of Papa's Got..., pretty similar sound to it, very similar style and pace. 'Organ Thang' sounds good! Those were the days indeed! Cheers.

I don't know myself

but you might want to venture into the funk collecting world. Funky16Corners http://funky16corners.lunarpages.net/ or Fufu Stew http://fufustew.wordpress.com/ are very knowledgeable folk who might be able to help.
Good luck

Quincy Jones?

Could it be the Quincy Jones version from his 1965 Verve album Quincy's Got A Brand New Bag?

Hi JQW, thanks for your

Hi JQW, thanks for your reply. The Quincy Jones version is very similar sounding, the closest I've heard. I would say the version I know is funkier, a bigger fatter sounding beat, but the same pace and style. Nearly there! Cheers.
