Derek Doom vs Vincent Lyons: one-camera rock film-making at its best!
I've bigged up Vincent Lyons before around here as a fantastic single-camera, non-pro (as far as I'm aware) live music documentarist - usually in connection with his exquisite clips of Jan Akkerman at clubs in Holland.
Lyons occasionally travels to Ireland (sounds like an Irish name), and he recently uploaded some clips from a festival in Galway a week or so back, including this one of recently reformed Celtic rock behemoths Horslips ending their show with 'Dearg Doom'.
For my money, Lyons is the DA Pennebaker of his era. Yes, other of his clips are 'more professional' in terms of being 100% in focus, maintaining angles/steadiness, etc, but this one really captures - I think - a sense of old fashioned rock'n'roll excitement, akin to Pennebaker at Monterey filming the Who, Hendrix et al. You really get a sense of being there, being involved and of the band having a great time playing.
I believe Horslips play Cropredy this weekend (or was it last weekend?).
Anyway, even if you don't care for the music, doff you caps, I suggest, to Vincent Lyons: one of the youtube greats!

Sorry if I'm slow here
And forgive me for being a smartass but did you really mean 'Derek' Doom?
Yes, I did mean it...
...I suppose it's just an in-joke with myself. It's always sounded like 'Derek' to me, so why not - a bit of surreal fun, that's all. Like those people who continue to enjoying hearing 'Scuse me while I kiss this guy' in 'Purple Haze' and suchlike.
If it helps, the band themselves refer to it as 'Barney Boom', which goes back to a malapropism from a guy they met on the road in 1973. And why not? :-)
Only kidding
You are spot on! Horslips were one of the first bands I saw live and have become part of my pre Christmas build ups for the last couple of years!
The Dublin 02 gigs were outstanding!
For some reason I keep thinking of one of those...
...cocktail party sketches in 'The Two Ronnies'. Imagine, say, a convention of insurance people:
Barker: 'Good evening old boy, Godfrey Harbottle, Good Times Insurance. and you are...?'
Corbett (proferring hand to shake): 'Doom - Derek Doom'
Barker: 'Delighted, delighted. In the insurance game yourself, Derek?'
Corbett: 'No, sadly not - no, in fact, I am the flash of hawkeye in the sun...'
Bennett: Crikey, that sounds like fun...'
Corbett: 'Well, it is for me, Godfrey - not so great for you or anyone else. In fact, not to put too fine a point on it, if you see me coming you'd better run, run, run...'
[Exit Barker, pursued by Doom]
Great footage
If ye don't care for the music ye have no soul!!!
And here's some more 70s rock...
...with the Vincemeister on camera. Wishbone Ash in Holland recently:
