Defending myself against podcast charges

kcgrady's picture

Just listening to the latest podcast and it would appear that Mr Hepworth, Mr Ellen and Ms. Mossman find the fact that I(and I believe other fanatics) am coming from Australia to see Mott The Hoople a little strange because Ian Hunter has been playing live continuously with various other Mott personnel, and the Mott reunion, in your opinion, is just a 'rebranding exercise'. The fact is, my learned friends,Ian Hunter has never toured Australia, neither has any other Mott member other than Mick Ralphs in Bad Company back in 1974. A fact, I believe, that would have been easy to discover if you employed one of the main tools of journalism - research! Anyway, I consider the trip will be money well spent, and a pint or two for any of you who might be frequenting public houses in the vicinity of Hammersmith is certainly not out of the question.
The Who played here last week (first time in 41 years), Neil Young made it to Adelaide a month or so back (first time in eons), as did Leonard Cohen (over twenty years between drinks). Simon & Garfunkel are due here in June (not sure if they have ever made it this far before)so eventually if you wait long enough...so my question is what's the longest wait you spoiled guys in Britain have had to wait to see an artist live?

Oils at Sound Relief

Cheers Tony. I watched the Oils play at the recent bushfire benefit (via PayTV) and was reminded what a magnificent drummer Rob Hirst is. It was a powerhouse performance from him and the rest of the band were obliged to follow...

Todd Rundgren

I waited over thirty years, but finally saw Todd in November. Worth the wait.

(Of course the post was about living in a part of the world a little further off the beaten track than East Anglia, but this was genuinely the first time it was possible for me to witness TR live.)

Hardly any 'new' in the set in January / February

Saw Neil play two shows recently and very ittle 'new' stuff played - lots of 'Harvest', 'Harvest Moon' and other early stuff 'Cortez', 'Powderfinger', 'Hurricane', 'Rockin' In The Free World', 'Cinnamon Girl' 'Cowgirl In The Sand' and so on. So go with confidence my friend!

That's great news

Thanks KC
End of May ,here in Barcelona, he's playing the Primavera sound Festival. hope he does a similar set. I've heard the new one and it ain't that good. I'd be really happy if he did a lot of "old"

Get your revenge KC

start dissing Broooce.

Go for it! There's no time for research, too busy finding album sleeves eh?

KC is absolutely right and any fan's dream is to see MTH reform with the original line up.

Hunter has only played with Ralphs for one short tour.

The Mott The Hoople Fans gather in two corners of the internet world. The yahoo list has always been well attended by old farts like me who saw them, others who got into them via Hunter's solo work, sons and daughters of dad's who were fans, casual admirers and newer fans.

The yahoo list has been around forever. Appearances by Hunter on Jools and Letterman seemed to bring a new breed plus regular namechecks by much bigger artists, most notably REM have helped.

I can understand fully why people can't take to Mott The Hoople, when you dissect them, they aren't original, no great guitar player and the singer can't really sing but as a live act they were unbelievable.

However to say that Hunter has been touring with various members for years is complete tosh. Plus, to give Hunter credit, he's never milked MTH's back cat, preferring to concentrate on his solo work and adding a few Mott tracks in to the set list.

Sheesh!

ACH - defender of the faith

Appreciate your support ACH. As I say, you only live once, and if I haven't seen Mott play live can I say I have truly lived!!

Just one cornetto

When I lived in London, I was fairly relaxed about seeing bands etc because it never felt like a now-or-never gig. I'll see 'em next time. Over here in NZ, when someone you quite like comes over, I find I have to see them because there may never be another opportunity.

Former members of Mott

Apart from the late Ronno, who was died more than a decade ago and was hardly effectively a member of Mott for more than one single, and Ralphs, with whom Hunter was reunited for a tour in the last couple of years, I wasn't aware that Hunter had played with any former bandmates down the years - certainly not on any of the occasions I've watched him in the UK.

As far as I know, he hasn't.

Morgan Fisher has been living in Japan for ages doing soundtrack and commercials work.

Overend has, to all practical purposes, dropped out of music to run his market in Hereford and do some very occasional production work.

Buffin has been quiet since he stopped getting producer credits at the BBC.

The La's

I waited 15 years to see them in 2005. I had a fantastic time although all the reviews said it was shite

I don't want to disparage anyone

But, until recently, I didn't realise that Mott actually had "fans". Yes, they had some good records in the 70s and I guess many people liked them but not in a way "fan" implies. The Osmonds had fans. So did the Rolling Stones, Bowie and David Cassidy. But Mott, like Mud, the Sweet, Pilot and the rest were just there. Occasionally they'd crop up on Top of the Pops and you might have a mate with an album of theirs but I didn't (and don't) know anyone who would describe themselves as a Mott the Hoople fan.

Don't think I'm knocking the Mott. Good luck to them and all who love them. It's been an eye-opener to find out that not only did Mott fans exist but that they still do.

That's because you're thinking of CBS-era Mott

with the suits and the platform boots. Many (most?) Mott fans nostalge back to the Island years pre-David Bowie.

Me, I love 'em both equally, but they're two very different bands.
