Dear Mr Lewry

Giuffre's picture

I believe you are the man in charge.

How about having an ongoing link attached to the blog where Word people recommend to other Word people things they think they would like because they are Word people? A bit like Word of Mouth for ordinary folk, without the need for endless comments.

I'll start:

- if you like Lucinda Williams, listen to the Robbie Fulks track "Pretty Little Poison" on his "Let's Kill Saturday Night" album

- if you like Jackson Browne you really must get hold of "Some Bridges" by Fred Martin & the Levite Camp. Look it up on You Tube

- if you live near Leicester do your best to see David Wyatt and ask him to sing Live and Breath

- if you are Bob Harris, play Live and Breath by David Wyatt on your show

- if you are near a FOPP shop, buy "Eric Goulden - A Dysfunctional Success" for 3 quid and enjoy a good read

- if you like music but think you don't like jazz, listen to "The Train and The River" by The Jimmy Giuffre Trio and be converted

- if you like the guitar, listen to Danny Gatton

What do you think?

I like the cut of your jib

"If you like the guitar, listen to Danny Gatton" could almost be one of the Ten Commandments of Rock. Would you agree that 88 Elmira St is probably the place to start?

It is my favourite

I particularly enjoy Blues Newburg and The Simpsons Theme.

There's lots of him to enjoy on You Tube including a clip called Slide where he plays guitar with a towel! It's not musically groundbreaking but it is entertaining.

Seconded

The follow up, 'Cruisin' Deuces', also hits the spot.

Little feller, small hands. An inspiration to many pudgy-fingered players. Apparently one of the undoubted many reasons he committed suicide was that he felt himself losing the ability to play due to the onset of arthritis. How much must he have loved what he did.

Oh.

Thanks. I'll have a look.

I think

That the Word blog already achieves what you're suggesting, albeit it in a much more informal, less structured way. I'll ponder on it, though, so thanks for the suggestion.

I love guitar...

..and in fact own and play Telecasters, but Danny Gatton leaves me cold.
Another guy who could play anything, so promptly went and did so.

Much as I like Dave Wyatt live...

...as Leicester-ish singer-songwriters go he's not as good as Dan Britton so if you're Bob Harris, play him instead.

Or

. . . as well.

See you at The Musician then, when they hold a Wyatt, Britton and Butler & Willson triple-header!

Giuffre | 25 September 2008 - 7:55pm

Indeed you will...

...and probably unknowingly before, as i shall be down there a fair bit beforehand.

Is it ok to use this blog for arranging ones social life?

No!

However, were you, me and Spiers and Boden all in the same room at the same time last week?

If so, weren't they good?

0
Giuffre | 26 September 2008 - 11:19pm

They were indeed

As were Jack McNeill & Charlie Heys supporting.
