What's it called?:
The Rooftop Recordings
What It Sounds Like:
It’s a bloke, a collection of guitars and a bunch of life experiences. Philips lives in a block of flats in Barcelona and recorded this in his living room with the windows open. There are no overdubs and the songs were captured in one take which gives the record a feeling of warm intimacy as the guitar sound combines with his smooth rich voice and, at times, the sound of the local bird population.
Ranging from blues to folk the songs are wistful and engaging. The standout tracks are “You didn’t make me”, which charts the shift from friendship to love and onto loss, and “Help me to forget”, where something has obviously gone horribly wrong and alcohol is the only answer. All of the songs are delivered with a quiet conviction and assurance which belies his relatively short song writing career.
What Does It All "Mean"?:
You can be cursed with a name which says “accountant” rather than “rock god” but still be blessed with fine guitar picking skills and the ability to pen simple, affecting lyrics.
Goes well with...:
This fits as well with a large malt, a comfortable armchair and quiet introspection as it does with a cool drink, a warm sky and a feeling of contentment.
Might Suit People Who Like...:
John Martyn, David Gray, songs with a touch of melancholy
