Danny Baker

Excitable Boy's picture

Anyone know why Danny Baker has been missing from his Radio 5 and Radio London shows lately ? Is he ill or is it something else ?

0

Yes

The reason given for his Radio 5 absence has been illness .

Anyone know what's wrong with Danny?

And while we're on the subject of Mr Baker does anyone have an April 2007 (I think) issue of "The Word" handy? In it was an article about all day radio with various DJ's. Danny listed an afternoon playlist that included "It's Too Bad" by the Jam. Would someone be so kind as to look it up for me and write it here? I lost that issue and it's been driving me mad trying to remember what was on it. Ta very much.

I'll bung it up later

when I'm through shouting at the telly.

James Blast | 1 November 2010 - 4:25pm

On today's Radio London show

he only said his future appearances would be intermittent and that his doctor told him not to talk too much.

0
MyAmericanMate | 18 October 2010 - 9:44pm

Said he will be missing...

..for much of next year too. It's at the serious end of "being not too well".

0
Bodhisattva | 18 October 2010 - 10:05pm

just read about this elsewhere

bad news, sad news. Get well soon, Danny. Life's mustard without you on air.

1
badartdog | 19 October 2010 - 11:27am

Jeez

Vulpes Vulpes | 18 October 2010 - 10:30pm

This is worrying

Is there any more information ?

0
dai | 18 October 2010 - 11:24pm

It is worrying.

I hope it isn't something too serious. Saturday mornings without his podcast will never be the same.

Get better soon, Danny.

0
Billybob Dylan | 18 October 2010 - 11:49pm

Candyman.

0
Beany | 19 October 2010 - 9:38am

I would like to add my best wishes to Danny.

Saturdays wont be the same without you.

Get well Dan.

0
jackthebiscuit | 19 October 2010 - 9:43am

That's a real shame

Hope he's better, soon. His podcasts are a hoot and make long-distance drives much less irksome.

I'd been wondering about the absences; sad to hear it's serious stuff.

0
iainiain | 19 October 2010 - 9:47am

Seconded..

..all the best Dan. Get better soon.

0
Philip Bryer | 19 October 2010 - 11:30am

I'm not a sport fan

But always pulled his pods for listening - Widescreen genius. Always has been

0
Mondo | 19 October 2010 - 11:54am
stimpy | 19 October 2010 - 4:08pm

Quality DVD boxset time

I'm hoping Danny is at least well enough to work his way through all his favourite Norman Wisdom films on DVD. (Or does he have them on LaserDisc?)

0
Nick White | 19 October 2010 - 12:34pm

Ahoy hoy

Little on the wireless or on podcasts makes me smile as much as the Candyman. His obvious joy at doing what he does, his knowledge of music, football and life is second to none and I'm lookin forward to hearing him back to full time health...

0
jockblue | 19 October 2010 - 1:13pm

Get well soon Dan

Best wishes for a quick and full recovery.
Your kind are rare that can brighten any dull day.

0
Carl Parker | 19 October 2010 - 1:23pm

It isn't the same without you.

Mike

0
Neil Jung | 19 October 2010 - 2:13pm

Jonesing for Danny ?

If you miss Danny's weird and wonderful topics, then tune in to Steve Wright,as many of The Candyman's topics turn up on his show.Well,so i've been told.I'd rather listen to silence

1
Sour Crout | 19 October 2010 - 2:33pm

Here's hoping it's but a hiatus

and that so, rather than getting maudlin, we can fill the time Candymanstylee. Apols if it's been done before but how about a song duration giveaway? Usual rules: you get to pick one duration and no-one else can have it, you henceforth own all the songs that last that long. First dibs.

I'm having 3:52, which gives me the live version of Fear is a nan's best friend by John Cale, and lots of other goodness besides...

Hurry, I suspect the massive will be bagging the longer durations first...

0
spt | 19 October 2010 - 2:45pm

Fear is a Nan's best friend.

Best alternate song title, ever.

0
skirky | 19 October 2010 - 9:17pm

Can someone explain the Candyman thing?

I know he plays the song, but why is he the Candyman?

0
Five-Centres | 19 October 2010 - 2:48pm

Good news everybody!

Christian O'Connell has tweeted this today:

Some great news, Danny Baker is well enough to be back on 5Live this saturday for a while. Radio gets its king back, i get my lie in back

1
DrJ | 19 October 2010 - 3:28pm

No one's answered my question

Someone put me out of my misery please

0
Five-Centres | 19 October 2010 - 3:30pm

Who can take a sunrise?

I don't think there's a particular link to the song other than that a) Danny is a huge Anthony Newley fan - he knew him, I think, and has claimed to be his love-child; and b) The "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" soundtrack is one of his all-time favourites.
But of course I might be missing some secret joke.

0
Nick White | 19 October 2010 - 3:34pm

Thanks Nick

Five-Centres | 19 October 2010 - 3:45pm

The Dame

A couple of years ago he renounced the Candyman soubriquet to become 'the Dame'. He was quickly disabused of the notion.
He's been the Iron Horse of broadcasting for me for years, hope the old boy makes a full and speedy recovery.
My favourite moment was him necking a half bottle of whisky 'live' on air during the old All Day Breakfast podcasts, radio gold.
That an Wisbey doing Ladies Bras...

0
PaddyH | 19 October 2010 - 5:59pm

DB is broadcasting on

BBC London 94.9 RIGHT NOW.

0
Davy H | 19 October 2010 - 3:55pm

Sky dark with hats

welcome back Dan.

And bigging up the Mark Gattis series

not that he probably watched it via my recommendation I'm sure.

When I was a uni up the country in the days before your streaming and podcasts, my Mum used to tape his Sunday GLR shows while she listened to them and posted them to me. Every Tuesday there would be a thud of 2 TDK D90's on the mat and that would be the soundtrack to my walks to seminars and lectures for the week. It often jused to confuse the hell out of people when they heard the London travel news booming out of my roo=m in Halls. I like to think I educated several people on the dangers of the Hanger Lane Gyratory System and the East India Dock Road. I still have them in the loft somewhere

There are none on radio to match him IMO, even if the music he plays is sometimes dubious to my taste there is always a record that occassionally knocks you sideways and leads you into previously undiscovered countries

There was a song he played a lot round the mid to late 90's called (i think) "The Alchies With The Bottle Under The Bridge" by McCavity's Cat that I loved but never could find. So my comp tapes always had his intro "I'm dedicating this to Arsenal and their fans" over it.

I come to praise Dan, not to bury him. Good luck with the nuclear scan, Dan!

(Less talking from the Dan for a while? The world will seem a hell of a lot quieter)

DogFacedBoy | 19 October 2010 - 4:42pm

If they've caught it early enough...

...he should be alright. Mate of mine had it last year. Only side issue is he can no longer drink alcohol higher than 8% ABV...

0
Richie B | 19 October 2010 - 6:00pm

caught what early enough ?

Or is it a secret ?

0
dai | 19 October 2010 - 6:35pm

Certain people...

...have surmised that it is a serious throat problem. Danny himself described it as "a mouldy neck"

But I know as much as anyone else does. Zero. If it were vocal nodes he would have to have an op, rest for a while, and that's it. I sincerely hope it isn't cancer but it's not the end of the world if caught early enough. Radiotherapy is tiring, but in small doses no more unpleasant than an X-ray.
If anyone does know, perhaps they'd be kind enough to enlighten the Massive.
And Mr. Baker, if you are reading this, I doff my titfer to you. I was in the studio audience for this:

Richie B | 19 October 2010 - 8:12pm

DogFacedBoy
