Dancing With Myself

Carolina's picture

My life as a failed dancer started young. Ballet lessons lasted only weeks though I was very taken with the blue tutu and would wear it on country walks, days out etc. Then came country dancing at school. I did master the polka, a skill which has not stood me in good stead. Not much opportunity to polka round a nightclub. Next I spurned the chance to go to Frank and Peggy Spencer’s Disco Dance classes which my sister went to. So I never did learn the hand jive or other similar seminal seventies routines. Then there was my attempt at the side-to-side hopping-on-the-spot move that Madness did - all the rage in my teenage years. Best draw a veil over that.

Well I could go on. Parties, weddings… 'I don’t feel like dancing' by the Scissors Sisters pretty much sums it up

But there is just one song that I can’t help moving about to (in the privacy of my own home). It’s The More I See You by Chris Montez. Whether it’s the handclapping, the bouncy rhythm, the sunny melody I don’t know, but I can’t resist jigging about to it in my own ‘special’ way.

Is there a song that gets you on your feet, other reluctant dancers out there?

And here’s the Chris Montez song

4

There are a few.

I hardly dance at all these days, since I'm a fairly modest drinker and haven't taken any drugs for at least 10 years, but the one that makes me shake a little rotund teacherly rump at the moment is:

(Beastie Boys - Make Some Noise)

Back in the day, this one was guaranteed to make me hit the dancefloor and embarrass my 33 year old self no end.

(Livin' Joy - Dreamer)

"Never forget how to dance"

This trailer trash stomper makes me howl and holler while strutting dementedly around the room...
"Camel Walk" by Southern Culture on the Skids:

Any Congolese soukous music can get me going, especially when the guitars lift off midway through a song, as they do here (soon after two minutes in)...
"Banda Yango" by Tshala Muana:

I just hear the opening notes of Doin' The Do

... and the urge to dad dance is overwhelming.

ganglesprocket | 25 May 2011 - 12:43pm

Oh! OH!

Doin' The Do! AMAZING.

It's in the same camp as these, for me:

(Double Trouble & The Rebel MC - Street Tuff)

and this

(Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart)

That's it, Bob, I've HAD IT

Fourth thread I've been on this morning, and I simply can't stop entirely agreeing with each and every one your posts therein. Dammit, man, have some consideration.

Betty Boo!

Not just fab (and gorgeous) but always reminds me of the brilliant Arnold Brown comedy routine about him trying to buy a Betty Boo record in Our Price. So I love her on a number of levels...

Never fails

Stone Roses - I Am The Resurrection

Deee Lite - Groove Is In The Heart

Marlene Shaw - California Soul

Lil Mo' Ying Yang - Reach

Help Me Somebody - Byne Eno

"You need to take a good look at yo'self and SEE if you're the kind of person God wants you to be - its no big thing its a SMALL thing

What.People. Think."

The "I..I know" fadeout has been turning me inside out for 30 years

After a rough day and night yesterday

As I stood on the Everest-like escalators at Rosslyn Metro, I found myself starting to sway to this:

Soup Dragons - I'm Free

sitheref2409 | 25 May 2011 - 1:39pm

God I LOVE that song

I wrote a blog post about it ages ago, explaining why: http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/help-i-am-a-prisoner-a-talcum-powd....
Good call!

U Can't Touch This

At the time of posting this had 14,456,356 hits - if any proof was needed of its popularity.

Failing that Outkast and Hey Ya or the obligatory slow smooch at the end of the evening.

Though you're more likely to find me in the kitchen at parties.

Dancing in the dark

to this is great. I am too self conscious to dance at events, but the sound of this just makes my insides leap

waldorf | 25 May 2011 - 2:54pm

There are so many things that are right with this

And so many things that were wrong with the singer.

But I reckon it's physically impossible not to want to dance to this.

Is it that insistent bass at the start? The delirious string section? That cry of untrammelled glee, heralding one of Quincy Jones' finest productions?

Beats me.

But if your feet aren't at least tapping to this, believe me, somewere buried deep within you, quite undetectable to your conscious mind, is a happy little corpuscle throwing a few shapes or two.

Once I'm on, I don't come off

But it takes something like this to get me going:

Top choice 5C

If you're asking, I'm dancing

When's the Word quiz night and disco?

See you there!

Many, many, many

some of which have already been mentioned. These two always make me slide across a beer soaked wooden dance floor with a gaunt mask of concentration blasting me back to being 15 again. I then slip outside and cough up a lung.

1
TedLoaf | 25 May 2011 - 8:25pm

Another non-dancer here

...though this one never fails to make me forget I have absolutely no sense of rythmn.

Oh, and anything by this guy

Fortunately, they don't crop up very often. Apart from in my car, which kind of makes the whole dance thing a bit difficult.

Never fails to get me doing my homeboy-with-sciatica shuffle. My favourite rap ever too.

What a wide range

Thanks a lot, guys. What a wide range of music that makes us want to dance. Especially enjoyed watching the Congolese video, fantastic dancing!

1
Carolina | 26 May 2011 - 12:42pm

I dance nothing like

this, but Guaglione will get me up and moving, no matter how many drinks I've had.

0
Francis Barry-Walsh | 26 May 2011 - 1:25pm

All Irishmen

are honour and duty bound to perform a very particular dance to this, every time they hear it.

0
Dadwardo | 26 May 2011 - 11:50pm

Ah yes..

Starting with a big raised finger..

What a great ad that was. Can't be arsed to find a YouTube clip.

0
Lenny Law | 26 May 2011 - 11:56pm

Alas

it appears that I have more time on my hands for here is that very Guiness ad. I used to have it as a screen-saver.

1
Lando Cakes | 27 May 2011 - 12:16am

Being a bloke, and thus of limited skill as a dancer..

I keep things simple.

House Of Pain. Jump Around.

All you need, really.

Oh. And a bit of classic Dexy's. Geno would be best. Air trombone to be played.

0
Lenny Law | 26 May 2011 - 11:03pm

White men can't jump

I was once in a small pub/club in Galway with two friends. There was a dancefloor, and when the DJ played "Jump Around" my friends and I put down our pints and started leaping about in an appropriate and not unreasonable manner.
"Er, sorry lads," said a member of staff, "The floor's very weak, so no jumping in here please."

0
Nick White | 27 May 2011 - 12:34pm

Dance floor fillers...

I'd never leave the dance floor whilst these were on:
PWEI - There is no love between us
Happy Mondays - Step On
Specials - Gangsters
Madness - One Step Beyond
Pixies - Debaser
Jane's Addiction - Been Caught Stealing

But the one that would convince me someone had hacked my brain to get me up and dancin'...

0
pompeygeorge | 28 May 2011 - 10:14pm

Sorry people but...

As per the thread last week, can the song/artist be included in the text when posting videos as about 50% of them don't come up on a mobile device for some reason and it means you miss out on contributors choices (I know
most of you did anyway).

Btw, for me it would be Hotel Yorba by The White Stripes, Good Life by Inner City, Love Can't Turn Around by Darryl Pandy and most of the songs listed in the 'my ex brother in laws shit record collection' thread.

0
art vanderlay | 28 May 2011 - 10:48pm

Love Can't Turn Around..

As, I believe, it is said by the youngsters: CHOON!

Lying on one's back whilst shaking off one's espadrilles is, of course, mandatory.

0
Lenny Law | 29 May 2011 - 11:21pm

Art, believe me,

You're better off not knowing mine.
