Dancing? I'm asking....a Word research thread

Dave Holley's picture

Having surprised myself by dancing for four (!!!!) hours at a party last week and then having read the Northern Soul thread below it made we wonder. As music was/is essentially designed to make us move our bodies:

Do you dance (enthusiastically when the opportunity arises)?

Did you used to dance but no longer do so?

Do you/have you always hate(d) the idea of dancing?

Whenever I get the chance

These days it's the odd 40th, school balls (for parents) and weddings. A coupla shandies and I'm up there. Always was.

Dancer

Various ways along the path: being involved in the Mod scene back in the 80s and from there the Northern Soul scene; the 'rave' scene following that, and on into proper clubbing to 'dance' music. Still like a good dance now - chuck on some Northern tunes or some old reggae and I'm anybodys...

My signs are vital

Don't think I've ever been a dancer per se (but I am human, I think). But if you call pogo-ing dancing, then I will have to revise that call. After all, I do know what a mace is.(Obscure Johnny Mpoed reference, sorry...)'Hey ho! Let's go!'

I do love to cut the rug

I do love to cut the rug myself, my music taste and dancing route was much the same as SimonL's, so classic soul, reggae, ska, and 50's and 60's rock and roll get me moving.

Not quite as vigorously as I used to, but if a floor filler comes on, I'm still up for it.

As SimonL

With a regular monthly do covering Jazz/Northern/Freakbeat/Ska. However, this is on hold whilst I await the arrival of Leaf #2. Tends to be festivals these days for gurning like a loon on a nice cup of tea.

Never stopped..

... when I was a young 'un !!

Predominatly because of House music and visit to the Hacienda in '88 made me a dedicated dancer.

I reckon for at least the subsequent 4 years I spent most Fridays and every saturday dancing in some venue or other. Whether it was a disused warehouse in Blackburn or the cathedral of House music, I could be found dancing. It was without any shadow of doubt the best time of my life.

Following that I moved onto original disco & northern soul and went to soul nights at least once a month and again spentall night on the dancefloor.

I (obviously) think it's great - whether I make a knob of myself is upto everyone else - but never apologise for enjoying yourself !

Music to me is for dancing or at a minimum nodding along to - it's lifes soundtrack is it not ?

I dance...

... poorly. Imagine "man with feet nailed to floor having epileptic fit." That would be me. I occasionally still try.

When I filled the Killers' ( albeit brief ) questionnaire

I ticked the box marked 'human'.

Lets Twist Again

Never danced - I did win a twisting competition at my dad's works christmas party when I was 6 though!

I tap my toes though!

With my son - he's 10 weeks old and his favourite song is Peaches en Regalia by Frank Zappa.

I flail.

...I could have cleared mines on a D-Day beach.

Late developer

I hated dancing back in the days when I was supposed to be doing it: I was the cross-legged eejit nodding out on the floor (14-18) or the eejit propping up the bar (18 - ought to know better). I didn't like music for dancing to, either, so no stax or motown allowed. Somewhere over the years I learnt to love my innate lack of rhythm, becoming even a Morris man for a decade, to my childrens eternal shame. Now I love the opportunity to cut a rug, and the more stax and motown the better, please, for which I thank Mrs Path. Now I'm the eejit coming down heavily on your toes.
