Cutting it live: John Hiatt
I was lucky enough to be on the Cayamo cruise in late February. Headline acts were Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, John Hiatt and Brandi Carlile. It peaked early for me as Hiatt's electric band set on the first night was brilliant. Unfortunately video recording at the headline shows is frowned upon so there's nothing on YouTube to prove my point. I particularly liked his new blues song Freight Train, and his band's performance, and especially Hiatt's guitar interplay with Doug Lancio was fantastic. Hiatt is no spring chicken. He's 57 and looks like he's lived a hard life but on the evidence of his electric set he could show most youngsters the way home, as a singer, rhythm guitarist, frontman and writer
I saw him the following day doing a 2-man acoustic set with Lyle Lovett and he played the same song again. Somebody got it here
Check out his singing on the last verse, and bear in mind this took place at about 1.30 in the afternoon. Dang!
