'Curating' a compilation??
is this the height of up your own arse pomposity? ok, perhaps you could argue that selecting a load of musicians to play at meltdown could be loosely (very loosely) described as 'curating' but 'curating a compilation?' I think jarvis cocker began this trend with his 'the trip' comp a few year sback and while I agree that it's a splendid selection of tracks, how much 'curating' went into the decision making process? I know the word provides a veneer of academic respectability but let's face it, all Jarv and his pal did was shuffle through their records/ipods and pass a list to family for consideration/clearance. worringly, it now appears that more people are jumping on the 'curator' bandwagon, curating festivals, gigs, press releases and trips to aldi for ten bob bananas. call me cynical, but that's not what I call 'curating.'

I recently read of a curated record store...
Apprently it means that some( all??) CDs in the racks have little handwritten notes from the staff attached to them
(bah humbug)
from the staff?
Or supplied by the industry...if rumours are anything to go by, that's the source for all those little post-its and index cards you see in bookshops. They do appear to be fairly endemic, both in the UK and the US.
I would agree with you but...
To be honest if I saw a compilation Cd that had been 'curated' by Mark Lamarr, Bob Harris or anyone else who's musical taste I consider to be close to my own then I would probably buy it.
Has anyone applied this to the Canterbury scene?
I 'd like the hear a Curates Egg, for instance.
or perhaps...
...a curate's Hatfield And The North?
I'll get me coat
Curating
I've just been asked to curate an event at our local arts festival. It's quite the buzzword isn't it? Makes me feel that I need to get at very least the Kronos Quartet, Jason Pierce and Laurie Anderson to do a retrospective of My Bloody Valentine. Or something.
In fact I may be limited to local acts, or acts with some local connection. Could be interesting. Except that it's Sutton Coldfield.
Licencing
I'm a little dubious of the "compiled by.." cds you sometimes get with magazines. It's not as though the artist in question could just turn in a list of 15-20 songs; surely there is licencing issues in what songs they can actually give away?
It's not new
I have the vinyl double LP "By invitation only" curated by Alan Freeman (OK they didn't say "curated" but it's essentially the same thing). From memory it's ELP, Yes and all the stuff you might have heard on his Saturday Show. I also have another compilation on CD put together by Bob Harris (as mentioned above) and very good it is too.
