CSN&Y preference

Bruised Mike's picture

The idea I've nicked from Gauntlet but his post is probably buried in the Glasto stuff.

My order of preference has remained unchanged over the years:
1. Nash (the anthems)
2. Young
3. Crosby (the weird shit) even though I am a Byrds fan
4. Stills (the rock 'n' roll)

I was quite surprised at the choice of Ruby Tuesday although it suited Nash's voice pretty well. The Crosby songs just go on too long. And poor Stills is obviously not as well as he would like to be. Young was extraordinary, even on TV quite exciting.

But the whole thing's a soap opera really, isn't it? Some of us bought into it years ago.

Ahem..

'her' post is buried deep in the Glasto stuff!

And I've just reminded myself that I said:

My order of preference now - Nash, Young, Stills, Crosby.

(And back in 'their' day - Stills, Young, Nash, Crosby.)

It's worth noting that this preference was not in any way based on their music!!

Oh heck

I am so very sorry. Forgive me. Nearly everyone else is a bloke though. If it had been "Gauntlette" I might have got it.

Oh, and my preference was entirely based on the music.

Quite alright old chap.

Understandable mistake, especially since I am wearing the regulation fake beard...

Hmmm...

Nash - the sort of bloke you could take to meet your mum, nice moustache.

Crosby - lovely silvery hair and a bit like a big cuddly bear (with a new liver).

Stills - never trust a man with a hamster attached to the underside of his mouth. Looks unwell.

Young - sloppy dresser, rambles on and on and on and on...

What is

you mean you wasn't turned on by Crosbys' Walrus moustache?

Sadly some things must remain...

between David and I.

I saw Crosby and Nash

three or four years ago at the RFH. I honestly didn't expect much from Nash, but he was terrific, and I found myself singing along with thousands of others to Teach Your Children and Our House! I honestly would not have predicted that!

C&N Live

I went to see them at the (apparently) notoriously awful show at the Hammersmieth Odeon in the mid/late 70s and I thought they were wonderful, never understood why they were lambasted for their performance.

And when

you look at the history of CSN, Nash wrote nearly all the hits!

I my own humble opinion...

... Steven Stills pissing away of his talent is one of the biggest tragedies of music. Up till about 1975 his stuff was brilliant. Afterwards, sheesh...

snorting away his talent...

is probably more accurate.

I say again ...

Stills solo gig last year was the worst show I've ever attended. He always was insufferably smug ... though first solo LP is peerless.

My own preferences are:

Crosby - just because his material generally sounds so odd - all hippy lyrics and jazz inflections.

Young - provides the grit that the other three turn into pearls.

Nash - slightly twee but a perfect foil for the Cros, and as noted he penned the hits.

Stills - kept on now simply to protect the brand name I suspect.

Stills'

gig at SBEmpire last year was excellent. The first half especially, almost all acoustic, amazed me, as I had heard all the stories about the state of Stills, and he'd also been very ill. But he carried it off, and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes brought out the goosebumps.

I only heard Crosby's solo album...

... If I Could Only Remember My Name, a couple of years ago.

Always avoided Crosby's stuff because I hated Guinevere and Almost Cut My Hair with a passion. As you can guess I've now changed my mind completely. Laughing is such a good song...

Their Old like Fine Wine

Yes they have been round the track several revolutions. Stills is looking very rum butttt they can still do it. The magic between them is still present and it shows. I am sure they have recruited many young fans after the Glasto gem and good on them. Stills could have been as big as Young, he has the talent, shame that.

They still give a lot of pleasure to a listner and that is worth treasuring.

Solo better than together

Actually, I have always found CSN(Y)albums pale compared to their respective solo output:
Young - no comment required;
Stills's first three are fantastic;
Nash's Songs for Beginners is chock full of solid tunes;
Crosby's I'd Swear.. has been spoken for;
Crosby & Nash is a very underrated sideshow especially first two albums
