Crowded House Appreciation thread
Posted by MrRadio on 12 December 2009 - 9:30am.
I just thought i'd start this since they were listed in the worst bands of all time poll just to add a bit of balance
here is my favourite CH song live but there are so many other great songs aswell as a new album coming out in 2010.

'worst band in the world' indeed...
harumph!
Need their heads examined
I'm instinctively suspicious of Beatles contrarians; now I'm not saying Crowded House are up their with the Fixing A Hole hitmakers, but such is the brilliance of many of their songs, not to mention their universal hummability, that I find it similarly hard to trust the judgment of someone who would proclaim them the worst band ever. Get yer ears syringed people, then listen to Catherine Wheels. Couldn't find the magnificent studio version, so this live rendition will do instead.
Sublime
My favourite too.
My usual limited musical knowledge
restricts me to "Weather With You". Next question chaps, what do I start my CH collection with?
most folk will say 'Woodface'
but it's the Together Alone album that does it for me. The Recurring Dream hits collection is a good introduction too; you'll probably realise there's a few other tracks you know.
Another vote for Together Alone
It's properly wonderful. (Woodface also great, TA is just that bit better)
I'd start with the first few
I'd start with the first few CH albums, "Crowded House", "Temple Of Low Men" and "Woodface".
I'm quite a lot less thrilled with "Together Alone" and "Afterglow", and "Time On Earth" was a bit disappointing right up until it produced my new favourite CH track of all time, 'Silent House'. A very difficult ask that, to top "Weather With You" and "Fall At Your Feet". An absolute heart breaking killer.
Is this restricted purely to Crowded House?
What about the Finn albums? Also terrific.
oh, I do have rather a huge fantasy-musician-crush on Neil Finn.
Finns
The Neil and Tim solo albums are mostly very good (except Tim's latest one). Tim's go back a long way too, post-Split Enz. The first Finn Brothers album was a bit rough and under-done for mine.
If forced to choose an entry point (or three)....
- The latest Finn Brothers one "Everyone Is Here" was rather splendid.
- Neil's Try Whistling This is great.
- Tim's Before/After is my fave there.
And having seen Neil/Tim/Brothers live on several occasions, they can reproduce these things live even better.
Might want to check out Liam Finn too (Neil's lad). His recent album was interesting.
First Finn album
It's terrific, quite a lot better than the second I think. And the first half of Tim's Before and After is wonderful, though I think it tails off on "side 2".
I'd like to put in a shout for Temple Of Low Men (filthy reference in there), their second album, when they really hit their stride. When You Come (more filth!) is monumental, and was a highlight of the gig I saw. Another highlight was a very inebriated male punter getting up on stage during weather with you, and stripping off. The band were highly amused by this, and vamped the groove long enough for the finale...
I would heartily recommend Afterglow
here is a spotify link I especially love Sacred Cow and Dr Livingston
