Creative Zen MP3

Excitable Boy's picture

I have run out of space on my two wonderful Creative Zen Vision M's. Am therefore currently considering the Creative Zen X-Fi and the X-Fi2. Any of you have any good or bad experiences of either ?

iPod Touch would be my choice

They really are fantastic. Mines an internet radio, I play scrabble on it and watch BBC iPlayer. And it does music as well.

ipods do music very badly though.

If you want much better sound quality Creative or Sony are the best.

I would suggest that depends on which DAC your iPod is

fitted with.

Up to the 5th Gen iPod, Apple were using a decent Wolfson DAC. From that point they switched to an integrated DAC which is nowhere near as performant.

This means that the iPhone, iTouch, all the Nanos and iPod Classic produce an inferior quality sound to the earlier ones.

Ah

But they've saved $0.30 on the BOM!

I seem to have had a work/waffle cross over moment.

Very badly

would suggest it was unlistenable. It isn't - with decent headphones and at a decent bitrate, it's fine. I accept that the Zen maybe better in ultimate terms.

I was given an iPod. It is poo in comparison. (Goes to dig out Hefner 7")

Got both..

And I have to say I love the zen much more. Without doubt my favourite little gadget.

Loving the love

for Zen. I've had my Vision M 60GB for three years, never a problem with it, great sound, have stored masses and masses of tunes/podcasts etc on it, and still have loads of space. A bit bulkier than the pod, but what the hey?
Just wish there were more accessories.

Me and my Zen

I bought mine over a year ago, thanks to recommendations from The Massive. The sound is very good, so no problems there.
Minor niggles are 1) once you've ripped a few CD's it requires rebooting otherwise it just won't load any more. This means you have to press the reset button and wait about 10 minutes while it reorganises itself.
2) The randomiser favours whatever album is at the top of the alphabetical list. So much so that I end up deleting it due to overfamiliarity. Numbers go ahead of letters, so Josh Rouse's 1972 will be deleted fairly soon. Patty Griffin's 1000 Kisses went a few weeks back and Sigur Ros's () (characters before numbers) before that. Also while on shuffle it often repeats a track.
Otherwise there's no reason not to buy one.

More Zen

I've got a 20gb Zen Sleek, which has been in use daily since I purchased it four and a half years ago and has lasted well. I'm only now starting to have problems with it: the on/off switch has worn so it's easiest just to switch it on via a bent paperclip and the "reset" button. I'll definately get a newer Zen at some point, which is the ideal to upgrade to? Alternatively, if anyone knows how to solve my on/off switch problem I'll be delighted.
