Cover that

Austin's picture

Every now and then I hear a song and think - "that's a good song by A, if B did a version, it would be really good."

Don't Pay the Ferryman by Chris De Burgh - would be a great Slade song.

Walking on the Milky Way by OMD - would be a great Oasis song.

What other songs are crying out to be covered and by who(m)?

A couple...

I always wanted to hear Gold by Prince covered by Oasis - in fact, I always suspected that he pinched the chorus from them.

A good friend of mine once said that he thought The Replacements' Unsatisfied would have sounded awesome if it had been covered by Nirvana. I think he's probably right.

Here comes the Night

Here comes the night (evergreen 'Them' favourite)would be great as a duet for Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen. Elvis as the petulant, jilted voice in the verse and then Bruce comes in for the 'Woah Woah Woah...' and in to the chorus.

Be blinding that.

(note: there is a bootleg in existence of Bruce giving this song a run through at a soundcheck, but it's done in crap, slightly reggae style with 'The Band That Wasn't The E Street Band')

Rick Rubin was asked

which song he wished he'd got Johnny Cash to sing before he died. It was "A Place In The Sun". Fuck it would have been good. Just sing a couple of lines to yourself and imagine JC's old gravelly voice. Makes me weep just to think about it.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Marc

I've always thought that Marc Almond would do a good version Of DDDBM&T's Last Night in Soho.

Bit of a song swap

I always thought Big Me by the Foo Fighters sounded like a Lemonheads song. In turn, Something's Missing by the Lemonheads sound like an early Foos track.
Pavement's Box Elder sounded like The Wedding Present but they spotted that and covered it.

That's odd, I was thinking about this just yesterday ...

... 70's era Stevie Wonder doing a Superstition/Sir Duke flavoured version of Thin Lizzy's Emerald. Can you imagine those guitar lines played by a horn section!
