Entertainment For Lively Minds
Cool as F***
It's Thursday and the paper boy has just dropped the NME through the letterbox. The Cool List 2007 has been announced and standing proud at No 1 is Gallows frontman, Frank Carter.
Apparently he's 'way' cool.
This list has the NME all over the press, which is a canny marketing move. There will now be lots people downloading Gallows product, playing about a minute of it and then running away, frightened.
Personally I can't quite forgive them for mangling Staring at the Rude Boys, but if it means someone might hunt out the Ruts original, then the job's a good 'un.
Last year they gave Beth Ditto a huge boost, which in turn must have opened a few minds to the way ladies are portrayed in the media. More importantly, I'd wager those who aren't Perfect 10 breathed a sigh of relief.
Naming Carter as King of Cool is no bad thing, he stands out from the amorphous mass of Indie. He fits the outsider role with aplomb, proudly stating abstinence from booze, ciggies and drugs, and more importantly, the NME and Frank have made being Ginger cool.
