Cool Cats (and Hot Dogs*)

Paolo Meccano's picture

Inspired by the Bryan Ferry thread, I'd like to ask who you consider to be the coolest people in music.

To start, I present Willie Woods (top-right), guitarist with Junior Walker & The All-Stars. Look at him. Just look at him (especially in comparison to the gurning idiot he's stood so suavely behind).

* No, I don't know what it means either...

I don't think so...

I'm more concerned with individuals rather than groups as a whole.

It's either

Ronnie James Dio, Imelda May or Mark Lanegan. All three (but especially Dio and May) are incredibly down to earth and, as well as being shit cool, they all possess incredible voices.

Dio?!

Are you absolutely sure?! He's certainly a very nice chap (he was an absolute gent when I met him after a show in 1984) and a great singer, but cool? Hmmm... :-)

The Clash is of course the answer

but mainly their bass slinger -

effortless

Yes but he can afford to concentrate on the look

when he's got so little to play :-)

For me, the coolest musicians are those who can play the nuts off their instruments whilst making it look and sound effortless.

The Steve Gadd "50 ways..." example that's been posted here frequently is an exemplar of that.

Here's a clip of him showing off the drum fills at the end of Aja - the good bit starts 2:00 in.

Up until...

about 1978/9 when he started believing his own myth and constantly congratulating himself. He still actually believes he is dangerous..

paulbright81 | 29 October 2009 - 2:22pm

Does he?

Sure he's not just playing up to the myth because that's what his audience wants? Remember, he's a performer :-)

Perhaps..

Your probably right but it still annoys me, i am also a part of that audience its not what I want.
