Converting a region 1 DVD

David Rothon's picture

I know I should probably post this on a Mac forum or something, but I thought I'd just see if any of the Massive can advise how to convert a region 1 DVD so it's playable on a Mac or PC. I remember reading about something you can download to convert anything to region 0, but has anyone here actually addressed this issue successfully?
Many thanks in advance if you can help.

I use DVD Region Killer

on my pc and it works fine. It's a free download. You may need to download some new firmware for your DVD drive as well. This site may be helpful: http://tdb.rpc1.org/

I think you can also use DVD Shrink

It's a free download as well.

And if you're using a Mac...

try the freeware MacTheRipper

Seconded

Mac The Ripper will give you a DVD clone which, if required, can be burned to a fresh region-free DVD.

And if you want to watch it using your DVD player and TV

.....simply go here -

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

type in the make of your DVD player and with a bit of luck you'll find a simple code which'll let you make your player region free(or multi region/Region 0).

I actually had to do this last night to watch Bram Stokers Dracula as the DVD was Region 1.

This is the first thing I do when I get a new player.

I cannot imagine why the manufacturers persist with the pathetic drivel that is Region-specificity. They really do deserve a kicking.

Richer Sounds in Bristol will even give you a photocopy of the hack instructions for the model you've bought if you ask them nicely. Works every time.

Thanks…

… one and all for your suggestions. Some of the options look a bit scary (seems you can knacker your hard drive if you're not careful…), but Mac the Ripper could be a goer - I already had it downloaded but didn't know you could use it for this.

MTR is simplicity itself...

- Stick DVD in drive
- Wait 20 seconds whilst MTR scans it
- Select 'Entire Disk' or 'Main Feature Only'
- Press the 'go' button

20 minutes later you have a region-free VIDEO_TS folder

Excellent…

… sounds almost too good to be true! Now I can order all those Ninon Sevilla DVDs…

MTR is simplicity itself...

...although it will remind you in apocalyptic terms that what it has just helped you to do is possibly illegal. I find that quite annoying.

Well, if it's a DVD I've actually bought…

… I'll make a point of not feeling guilty! Plus the whole region-coding thing is an utter scam in the first place.
