Constitutional Crisis of Pop ?

Steven C's picture

Given the recent demise of MJ (you may perhaps have read something of it in the press or chanced upon some TV coverage) the question is surely, who is now the 'King of Pop'? I couldn't think of anyone.

Madonna is clearly the Queen of Pop.

Elton John remains the Queen Mum of Pop.

Kylie perhaps the People's Princess of Pop, and

Dido gets my vote as the Princess Michael of Kent of Pop (a bit too posh and not much liked) but is there a King?

Or are we in some sort of inter-regnum presided over by by Bono & the boys - the Oliver Cromwell & the Witch Finders General of Pop?

Any thoughts?

Rick Astley?

Rick Astley?

Is John Lennon

The Arch Duke Ferdinand of Pop then?

I think so, yes

and Prince - who abdicated some years ago - is the Duke of Windsor of Pop. But would that then make Sheena Easton the Wallis Simpson of Pop?

King Of Pop

Gotta be Mozzer surely?

Leedsboy | 30 June 2009 - 1:16pm

Depends if

the schism can be repaired and a sonic re-unification negotiated to enable him to hold the titles of King of Pop and the Pope of Mope simultaneously.

It's a restoration really

Undoing all the work of Henry VIII in one, sweet pop music fuelled moment. Could be bigger piece of history than Live Aid.

Not suitable

I was thinking more the Lord Protector of Pop seeing how he hates royalty, but then I remembered he hates Cromwell too!

0
Danny | 30 June 2009 - 7:31pm

He's largely miffed with most things

Perfect for royalty.

0
Leedsboy | 30 June 2009 - 8:14pm

At the risk of sounding controversial

Surely it was and is Phil Spector.

0
Lucas Hare | 30 June 2009 - 1:19pm

Maybe more

the Architect of Pop.

0
Steven C | 30 June 2009 - 2:25pm

I thought he was...

the Tycoon of Teen.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 30 June 2009 - 2:32pm

Paul King?

He was in the band King. Surely they have some sway? Maybe we need Loz Hardy to make the decision?

0
milkybarnick | 30 June 2009 - 1:32pm

Paul King

was The King Of King

0
stimpy | 30 June 2009 - 3:13pm

Loz Hardy...

Thanks for that, just spat tea over the computer.

Dan Edwards | 30 June 2009 - 5:10pm

King of Pop

The King is dead, long live King Macca surely?

Is Gary Barlow the Prince of Wails?

0
John_Innes | 30 June 2009 - 1:41pm

Macca ...

now more the Uncle of Pop I think. In which case that may make him the Lord Mountbatten of Pop?

0
Steven C | 30 June 2009 - 2:24pm

Making Yoko...

...the Princess of Wails surely...

I've already got my coat, thanks.

0
MarkHagen | 30 June 2009 - 3:37pm

Tony Hadley ...

... the Rudolf Hess of Pop, languishing in Spandau for crimes against humanity.

0
Steven C | 30 June 2009 - 2:31pm

I propose

a constitutionally challenging dual monarchy of....

Pet Shop Boys.

0
Black Type | 30 June 2009 - 2:55pm

Witchfinder General?

Must be this lot surely?

(Caution: may contain NWOBHM)

0
stimpy | 30 June 2009 - 3:17pm

Requiem... can you turn it up a bit?

NWOBHM or not, that must be the biggest gap between title and sound I've heard in quite some time. File under "weedy, in the extreme".

0
Rufus T Firefly | 30 June 2009 - 4:31pm

The Wat Tyler of Pop

Billy Bragg?

Interesting question

I thought along these lines when reading the many quotes that MJ was a musical genius. I have somewhere between 1500 and 2000 cd's and I thought who in my collection would I consider to be a musical genius? The truth is not many at all. Dont get me wrong I like most of the cd's in the collection and probably wouldnt get rid of very many if I needed to make a cull but true musical genius? Off the top of my head Miles Davis, Paul Simon, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen. Plenty of other artists who I consider are great but not actual musical geniuses.

It's got to be....

Howard Devoto of course.

0
Pete | 30 June 2009 - 7:05pm

Surely...

Paddy McAloon is in with a shout?!

0
humphreym | 30 June 2009 - 8:41pm

The court jesters of pop

Laughing Lenny Cohen, Van 'the mirth' Morrison or Mark 'Merriment' Eitzel

0
PaddyH | 30 June 2009 - 9:33pm

Chairman Of AG Barr

Who make Irn Bru. Clearly the king of pop.

0
Resting Place | 30 June 2009 - 9:50pm

Prince Philip

Sorry. He's the Pop of King (to be)

0
Beany | 30 June 2009 - 10:35pm

Shane McGowan
