The Comedians' Comedian

I heard this Phrase on some old clip i was watching on You Tube .This is usually reseved for someone you've never heard of.
This thought came into my head about who would be The Rock Stars' Rock Star,The Singers' Singer,The Guitarists' Guitarist Etc.
Try and keep Richard Thompson answers to a minimum please.I'm going to nominate Backwards7 as The Word Magazine Bloggers' Blogger

Mark E. Smith

To misquote Python

Jim Davidson had an areshole transplant...but the arsehole rejected him.

Syd Little

The straight-man's straight-man. Not a funny bone in his body.

Steve Hill | 10 April 2008 - 9:45am

Napkin & Cruet

The straight man's straight man, officially endorsed as such by the Grand Order of Water Rats in 1973, is none other than Billy Napkin, the ever-patient foil for the rib-tickling antics of the much-loved and sorely missed funny man Colin Cruet.

Archie Valparaiso | 10 April 2008 - 10:49am

The drummers drummer

Come on down, Mr David Mattacks. Humble, self-effacing, astonishingly loud and never just quite the obvious bangs and crashes.
Sets his own kit up, you know.

Retropath2 | 10 April 2008 - 1:53pm

Bass player's bass player

I've read that ex-Japan bassist Mick Karn being described as the bass player's bass player on several occasions, and as a lapsed bass player myself (hah! who isn't?!) and having seen him many times on stage down the years, I'd have to agree that he really can spank that sucker real good, or, more specifically, his custom-built fretless 5 string WAL. His style is utterly unique and in his rubbery hands has made what is ordinarily a supporting instrument an almost expressive one.

Freaky Trigger | 10 April 2008 - 3:04pm

I'd have to go for James Jamerson

The Lord Of The Low Notes, The Big Boss Of The Bass, Funk Brother Number One..
*goes on like this for several hours*

This isn't Jamerson himself (having been dead for some years now), but all the more incredible that these 'have a go heroes' can nail his moves so tightly in these play along pieces.

'Darling Dear'

'For Once In My Life'

Dave C | 10 April 2008 - 4:00pm

The troubled star's troubled star

Amy Winehouse?

Sven | 10 April 2008 - 3:22pm

Bernard Manning

The dead and good riddance Comedians Comedian.
