Coldplay bang to rights?

No, this time it's not Fraser's conundrum or the unknown herbert who's claiming Chris Martin ripped off his ditty. This time it's a 2004 track from none other than your uncool-as-uncool-can-be Joe Satriani:

The same key, lads? Come on, you can try a little harder than that, surely.

You're nicked sunshine

There's no way he's gonna talk himself out of that one

Pat Carty | 19 June 2008 - 10:01am

i'd love to think that

i'd love to think that Martin's iPod is crammed with 90's wank rock, hour upon end of steve vai, instamental Van halen highlights, and paul gilbert leads.

I'm looking forword to th4e next album [in a decades time] when he nicks the melody of Frank Zappa's 'five-five-Five'

and just to make the point again, Cold play are the Dire Straits of the 21st century!

blake | 19 June 2008 - 10:09am

Pah!

Coldplay aren't a patch on the much maligned Dire Straits.

Listened to Alchemy just last week - still a truly great live album.

Fraser M | 19 June 2008 - 10:58am

you understand me, kind

you understand me, kind sir.
i actually really like dire straits, the 1st ablum particularly is brilliant. but it's more that people will say they love them noe[ find me a record collection with out Brothers in arms [except mine....to be fair]} but in 20 years time they will avow all knowledge of them.

blake | 19 June 2008 - 12:58pm

Coldplay Vs Dire Straits

Every time I hear the opening to the song Viva La Vida on the radio I think it's going to be Brothers In Arms.

matt_cochr | 19 June 2008 - 1:10pm

There is an accusation of plagiarism

It's not that one it's from some band called Creakyboards (no, me neither):

http://www.hollywoodgrind.com/coldplay-plagiarized-creakyboards-song/

Sven | 19 June 2008 - 10:50am

Same chord sequence. . .

but there's no crime in that, and the melody is well different. It's your Uncle Joe who'll be gleefully rubbing his shred-calloused hands this morning, I reckon.

Archie Valparaiso | 19 June 2008 - 10:54am

Not reading properly

I see now that was already covered in the original post.

Sven | 19 June 2008 - 4:56pm

Has anyone actually checked the Satriani original?

We are living in the age of easy digital jiggery-pokery, after all...

Vulpes Vulpes | 19 June 2008 - 11:56am

Yeah, it's kosher

I checked at LastFM before posting.

An even more open-and-shut case than "My Sweet Lord" AKA "He's So Fine", I reckon - the same melody, the same key. . . exactly the same tempo, even.

"If I Could Fly", eh. Ooh, you probably will be able to soon, Joe - in that Lear jet you look set to get from your hefty cut of the proceeds of "Viva La Vida".

Archie Valparaiso | 19 June 2008 - 12:14pm

I'm assuming that Satriani

I'm assuming that Satriani will pursue this with vigour, but on the other hand, nothing seemed to happen with the Red Hot Chili Peppers/Tom Petty case a couple of years ago. Anyone know how that was resolved - did Petty get a credit on Dani California in the end?

Andy Lynes | 19 June 2008 - 12:29pm

Right! That's ENOUGH!

It's obvious that everyone hates Chris Martin and Coldplay.

They've got away with whatever they do for far too long now.
PUT THEM IN PRISON.
Go on, do it NOW!
LOCK THEM UP.

Mr Drayton | 19 June 2008 - 12:35pm

Won't work

Chris Martin would just walk out because he wasn't really enjoying himself.

Archie Valparaiso | 19 June 2008 - 12:51pm

I would

like to be a fly on the wall as he explains to some old lag why he has different coloured insulating tape wrapped round his fingers.
"er, um , well this one symbolises peace.....

Fight Test

My favourite one of these was The Flaming Lips "Fight Test", which is melodically EXACTLY the same as "Father & Son" by Cat Stevens. I love The Flaming Lips, but when I brought "Yoshimi..." home and played it for the first time, my thought was "someone is going to get sued for this". They got away with it for a while, then it came out as a single and an out-of-court settlement was promtly reached.

kidpresentable | 19 June 2008 - 4:02pm

Fight Test

Now there's an idea;

Ladeeez an' Genulmun, I give you - in the blue corner, he's married to Gwyneth, he has silly tape on his hands, it's Chrisssss Martin! And in the red corner, he's always had bad hair, he frets where others fear to shred, it's Joe Satrianiiiiiiii!

(sotto voce, to the contestants only)

OK lads, no biting, no spitting, no swearing, no poking each other in the eye. I want a good clean fight. First one to cry is the loser. No points decisions here, lads, it's full on until one of you blubs.

(bellows again)

Seconds out! Round one!

Ding

Vulpes Vulpes | 19 June 2008 - 4:56pm

In defence of Joe

Actually Joe Satriani is a pretty soulful rocking player and whilst he can widdle with the best of the also writes songs and sings 'em pretty well, and invariably has interesting sideways takes on guitar rock on his albums. Give me "Surfing with the alien" any time over dreadful 80s pop music, I say!

Twangothan | 19 June 2008 - 9:44pm

Which came first?

Helpless/Neil Young or Knockin' on Heavens Door/Bob Dylan? I've commented on this before, but it is the same song. Really. Mind you, do either of them really have to care that much? There's plenty more royalties wher they came from.
Another question that has always eluded me, or, at least, it's answer: you know on Halo of Flies by Alice Cooper there is the lift of the first line and tune of "Favourite Things" (Julie Andrews/Sound of Music). Was there a credit for that?

Retropath2 | 20 June 2008 - 8:16am

Opening Lines "Borrowing"

Billy Bragg borrowed the lines "I was 21 years when I wrote this song, I'm 22 now but I won't be for long" from Simon & Garfunkel's "Leaves That Are Green" for his own "A New England" and that song has never credited Paul Simon for the "lend". Maybe an out of court settlement?

And listen to this

And drive yourself to distraction.........
