Clean Up Your Own Back Yard

Lucas Hare's picture

In this day and age, there aren't many obscure Elvis Presley songs left. Not good ones, anyway. But here's an exception that my iPod threw up this morning:

I didn't realise...

...that I was posting a version without the backing vocals. But I rather like it.

I came across this Elvis tune recently.

Pretty obscure (well I hadn't heard it) and really good

Originally

By Smiley Lewis, if I'm not mistaken. It was a little too explicit for 1958/9, so the lyrics were changed into the more sanitised and familiar version. When filming his TV Comeback in June 1968, Elvis would (accidentally?) lapse into the original lyrics, so captured was he by the raw, primal, sexual qualities in the music that he'd turned his back on for a decade or so. Pleasing the Greil Marcuses of this world:

EDIT: From Mystery Train:

...Elvis rocks into 'One Night'. In Smiley Lewis' original, it was about an orgy, called 'One Night Of Sin'...Elvis cleaned it up into a love story in 1958. But he has forgotten - or remembered. He is singing Lewis' version, as he must have always wanted to.
