(and it's been a long time since I did any German) shouldn't there be an adjectival ending on mensch? I'd guess something like "die menschliche Machine".
Very long time too..
I think 'die menschliche Maschine' would translate as something like 'the masculine/manly machine' (but it's years since my school German classes -Fraulein Greene would be so disappointed)
I notice in the comments on the flickr page that a German speaker already hauled the artist over the coals a few times before this version was settled on.
