pedr0's picture

How about a Danny Baker style giveaway. You can claim your artist or band, when its gone its yours. You can then adopt them in your profile & are expected to be the expert that we will all defer to in relation to them. I will kick it off with Roy Harper. I will compile the list when it looks full. Over to you

Bob | 11 January 2012 - 12:25pm

I'm fairly sure

that there won't be a queue for this one

but I'll have Oasis please

0
Chimney Singing... | 11 January 2012 - 12:28pm

Grateful Dead for me

1
stimpy | 11 January 2012 - 12:28pm

Ooo Kate Bush is mine!

and I'll punch the man who says she's not

0
herringbrother | 11 January 2012 - 12:31pm

You've got

a lot of people to punch methinks

1
whitehorsehill | 11 January 2012 - 5:30pm

Glam Rock!

Though I suspect I'm not alone.

If I was to bag Fairport Convention I think there might be a scrap.

0
Five-Centres | 11 January 2012 - 12:33pm

You might as well bag Fairport

No one else has, as far as I can see.

0
Tim Turner | 11 January 2012 - 4:40pm

If you read that last post out loud

the effect is that of Tim Turner's narration. *carefully gets and folds Fairport-branded anorak*

0
skirky | 11 January 2012 - 4:56pm

Thanks for the reminder

I’d forgotten all about my namesake’s minuscule role in folk-rock history!

0
Tim Turner | 12 January 2012 - 5:28pm

Please sir!

May I have Frank Zappa?

0
mojoworking | 11 January 2012 - 12:35pm

I'd like

Prefab Sprout please.

0
garyt | 11 January 2012 - 12:40pm

Velvet Underground

I'm yet to meet anyone who could out-bore me on this band.

0
Brookster | 11 January 2012 - 12:43pm

Bruce

Springsteen

0
Hot Cider | 11 January 2012 - 12:45pm

Marillion, ta.

I doubt there was much need to be quick, but hey ho.

0
Fraser M | 11 January 2012 - 12:45pm

Nice idea.

Not trying to pour cold water on it. I've had a good think about who I'd like, and there isn't a single artist I'd claim to be enough of an expert on. This sort of surprises me, since outside of work I've thought and read about little else but music for the past 25 years. I've just never done the obsessive thing... I get really hooked for a while then I move on. Butterfly mind, perhaps. I'm like that. Also I'm terrible with detail - nothing sticks - ah well. I probably know more about The Beatles than any other group, but I know less about them than at least 50% of the people who post here. So good luck you experts. I'm just not ever going to be one.

5
Adman | 11 January 2012 - 12:48pm

Gary Numan

(including Tubeway Army)

0
YTDS | 11 January 2012 - 12:54pm

Cressida

I have both albums, on various formats, and love them equally.

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 11 January 2012 - 12:56pm

Can I take either The

Can I take either The National or James? Two of the many artists I have had unhealthy obsessions with.......

0
seanioio | 11 January 2012 - 12:57pm

Quick, someone claim

The Mahavishnu Orchestra before Colin H. When pressed for an expert opinion, say that it's all self-indulgent nonsense.

12
Brookster | 11 January 2012 - 1:00pm

(*belatedly notices thread*)...

...sorry Brookmeister, it HAS to be me... :-D

Breaking news: Mahavishnu Orchestra NOT self-indulgent nonsense! No sirree Bob...

3
Colin H | 11 January 2012 - 5:53pm

Ooh, ooh, Pink Floyd for me, please sir!

There are only three things I don't know about them!

0
Sting Ono | 11 January 2012 - 1:00pm

RT

for me. Surprised he wasn't taken.

0
Robbie1112 | 11 January 2012 - 1:06pm

RT

for me. Surprised he wasn't taken.

0
Robbie1112 | 11 January 2012 - 1:07pm

Sorry.

The last guy got him.

6
Bob | 11 January 2012 - 1:08pm

I thought about it

Then decided that I couldn't bear the weight of responsibility. I'll just snipe from the sidelines instead ;-)

1
Gatz | 11 January 2012 - 1:19pm

Supergrass

They edge it by virtue of their longevity as an obsession. What a band. Sadly missed, as has been pointed out recently on the blog.

1
The Muswell Hil... | 11 January 2012 - 1:11pm

Well, someone has to....

The Beatles for me. It's a nasty job, but someone's got to do it.

0
Stephen Merrick | 11 January 2012 - 1:13pm

How long

do I have to wait before publishing a thread with my new Rules To Be Obeyed in all things Beatle-related? It'll be a very long post with no comments because no-one will be allowed to disagree with me.

Number 1: From now one, you say BEATLES, you do not use that pseudonym-that-dare-not-now-speak-its-name-but-begins-and-ends-with-H. It's an old joke and I'm retiring it.

Ooh, I can feel the power going to my head already...

5
Stephen Merrick | 11 January 2012 - 1:30pm

seconded...

I hate to see the HJH moniker attached, its become very 'so last year'!

1
über-über | 11 January 2012 - 2:00pm

Well

I'm going to keep calling them the Fantabulosas.

So there.

Love them deeply and always will but the idea of an endorsement from Julian and Sandy is irresistible

0
FakeGeordie | 11 January 2012 - 3:40pm

Oooh...

... innee bold?

2
man.of.soup | 11 January 2012 - 6:53pm

Bona!

0
Beezer | 11 January 2012 - 9:27pm

I wonder where he

spends his evenings...

One of my favourite exchanges was -

"Me and Sandy were on a yacht and this huge wave washed us overboard"

"Did you drag yourselves up?"

"Oh no, just casual"

My dad worked over the road from the Paris Cinema as a young man and used to go to the recordings. I've got happy memories of him crying laughing listening to the repeats when I was growing up

1
FakeGeordie | 11 January 2012 - 10:26pm

The Polari Beatles

I've Just Seen an Eek
Bona Day Sunshine
You're going to Lose that Polone
Anna (Troll With Him)
Baby, You're a Rich Omi
Octopus's Lattie
I'm Vardering Through You

"Scrambled eggs / Baby how I love your lallies"

5
Moose the Mooche | 12 January 2012 - 10:25pm

Excuse the misquote

But I remember hearing a Round The Horne which featured Julian and Sandy in something like 'Escape From Stalag Lavender'

KH 'Why was it called Stalag Lavender?'

Julian 'Well, it was just a little camp...'

2
Beezer | 11 January 2012 - 11:21pm

Bona law

"We have a criminal practice which takes up all our time"

2
Reginald Mole-H... | 12 January 2012 - 12:23am

"Portuguese Man of War?"

"Well, I never saw him in uniform..."

0
skirky | 12 January 2012 - 10:51am

Coincidentally*

The Beatles and Round the Horne were at their best in 1967.

[*or is it? mingle-mangle , mingle mangle...]

0
Moose the Mooche | 12 January 2012 - 11:22pm

HJH

I still haven't worked out what HJH means. Help please before it disappears.

0
wezz | 11 January 2012 - 8:14pm

Short for

'Hey Jude Hitmakers' - The Beatles

0
Dr Volume | 11 January 2012 - 8:20pm

Thanks Doc

.

0
wezz | 11 January 2012 - 10:02pm

I think it was in the Sun

And I think it was when Macca Wacky Bacca was on X Factor

0
FakeGeordie | 11 January 2012 - 10:26pm

I'll be the Beatles expert, then...

Oof! Good luck with that one mate! Why can Paul clearly be heard laughing doing the backing harmonies on 'If I Fell' on the cassette version of 'A Hard Day's Night', but not on any other subsequent issues on other formats?

0
ShaunA | 12 January 2012 - 3:28pm

Oooh, I hope we're not supposed to be experts.

... Hopefully merely holders of the flame. (Because I know naffing)

0
Lying Doggo | 12 January 2012 - 5:20pm

I thought the role involved

both flying the flag as well being the resident expert and go-to man for dispute resolution.

0
stimpy | 14 January 2012 - 10:47pm

Zoiks!

Can I avoid that question by offering you the job of my second in command?

0
Stephen Merrick | 12 January 2012 - 7:53pm

daunted by the size of the canon and the length of the career?

nah.....not at all...
David Bowie

0
Vorgongod | 11 January 2012 - 1:14pm

Love (and/or Arthur Lee)

Either that or the Byrds (don't suppose I can have two...?)

1
man.of.soup | 11 January 2012 - 1:15pm

The Blue Nile

please. They are so enigmatic my lack of expertise won't really be that noticeable.

2
Leedsboy | 11 January 2012 - 1:25pm

Nick Cave (up to 1994)

The mad junkie years and a little beyond. If someone wants him from "The Boatman's Call" onwards, feel free.

0
Nick White | 11 January 2012 - 1:28pm

Handing on the Cave baton

Yup, I'll take over

0
LastRoseofSummer | 26 January 2012 - 6:22pm

Young Nick, Old Nick.

Good. I respect what Nick's done since, and completely understand why he went in that direction, but can't seem to get into it much. Maybe it's just due to my age - I can't work up the levels of obsession that were a feature of my younger years. Or maybe it was the heroin. (His, not mine).

0
Nick White | 27 January 2012 - 1:36pm

Pilot

;-) ;-) :-)

0
Happy Castle | 11 January 2012 - 1:34pm

I shall claim Blue Öyster Cult

before Lenny does. Admittedly he's met Buck Dharma - something I am hugely jealous of, but I've got the cufflinks (see Xmas present thread).

1
fortuneight | 11 January 2012 - 1:51pm

Damn...

The cufflinks are proper cöol, though.

0
Lenny Law | 11 January 2012 - 11:29pm

I'll claim Japan/David Sylvian please...

seeing as though most others on here probably won't - and i;d hate to see an artist sit out in the cold!

0
über-über | 11 January 2012 - 1:59pm

I'm having Genesis

so they're mine, right? I own them. I can't wait to get Mike Rutherford to sort my loft out

2
simonperrins | 11 January 2012 - 1:59pm

Sparks

I'll take Sparks and if they're not available I'll have The Waitresses ... which is considerably easier to be expert on!

0
JohnW | 11 January 2012 - 2:00pm

Really?

I thought you'd be in the queue for Nick Lowe.

Consider your Mael order in the post.

0
donttellhimpike | 11 January 2012 - 2:09pm

Nick Lowe

Hmm... Nick Lowe... The Wilderness Years! Even he's rather hazy on not only the details but often the plot. Nick Lowe expert would be a tough job maybe best left to one of the creative members rather than an fact based engineer!

0
JohnW | 11 January 2012 - 2:28pm

OK

I'll take the job. Just don't ask me for my opinion of Pinker and Prouder... and Party Of One though. Though there is rather a lot of years to cover if you include Kippington Lodge and Brinsley Schwarz as well not to mention Rockpile so a division of labour might be in order.

0
donttellhimpike | 12 January 2012 - 11:16am

I'll have

Orville The Duck (incorporating Cuddles The Monkey and Dippy The Dinosaur). Ta.

0
minibreakfast | 11 January 2012 - 2:05pm

The Decemberists

I heart them. And the rhythm section look like they'll be handy with a hammer and saw and our back garden fence is down. I'm not an expert mind, as can be seen by the fact I used the phrase 'Rhythm section' and not their names.

3
Mike Todd | 11 January 2012 - 2:06pm

I'll take the Super Furry Animals

It was either that or Our Daughter's Wedding.

[EDIT: I've just swapped from The Smiths to Super Furry Animals. More Fun! Less Baggage!]

0
Lying Doggo | 11 January 2012 - 3:06pm

Jackie Leven...

Because no-one else has improoved the quality of my life as much.
(Clash and TG come close though)

0
Doug B | 11 January 2012 - 6:01pm

Can I

be the supersub for JL for the times Doug is unavailable though illness or suspension

0
Bogart | 23 January 2012 - 11:25pm

Of Course...

Plenty of the big man (may he r.i.p.)to go around.

0
Doug B | 4 February 2012 - 2:37pm

John Martyn

dont claim any expertise on the man...just a deep affection for his music1

0
carabara | 11 January 2012 - 2:28pm

I call Anal C**t

As I am likely to be deluged with enquires about this band, please be patient when awaiting a response.

4
backwards7 | 11 January 2012 - 2:28pm

I shall be the voice of Fife

Big Country for me.

The temptation to take Del Amitri was almost too much.

0
sitheref2409 | 11 January 2012 - 2:29pm

New Order for me...

...But just New Order, someone else can do Joy Division

0
jezk | 11 January 2012 - 2:33pm

Joy Division

I couldn't chose between NO or JD, but you seem to have made the choice for me, Jez. I'll happily take the earlier incarnation: at least the discography is smaller!

0
Red Umpire | 11 January 2012 - 8:40pm

I thought...

...about doing both but that seemed a bit greedy. Freebass are still available if any other New Order heads want to help out.

0
jezk | 12 January 2012 - 10:54am

Not forgetting

Electronic
Revenge
The Other Two
Monaco
Bad Lieutenant

Someone else can have them!

0
Red Umpire | 12 January 2012 - 5:46pm

Loudon Wainwright iii

heartfelt, comic and crap at realtionships....im home

2
simontyler | 11 January 2012 - 2:36pm

And still no-one brave enough to take

Dylan.

Nah, me neither - I'm only obsessive, which makes me an amateur.

0
Slick | 11 January 2012 - 2:36pm

This is like watching...

...the formation of the United Nations. You will need a security council with five permanent members - presumably Beatles, Dylan, Bowie... Who else?

0
madfox | 11 January 2012 - 2:46pm

Kajagoogoo, Bucks Fizz

.

1
Fazackerly | 11 January 2012 - 2:56pm

Wot no Florence?

0
Bob | 11 January 2012 - 2:59pm

Can't be Kajagoogoo

They'd be "too shy" - eh readers? Chortle

2
FakeGeordie | 11 January 2012 - 10:36pm

The Housemartins

Christian Marxist Regionalism 4 - Rest of the world 0.

5
Moose the Mooche | 11 January 2012 - 2:52pm

For the present

I'll take Chuck Prophet.

However pedr0 I'd like to challenge your right to Roy Harper. So, without looking it up what was the B side of the only single to be released from the unreleased Commercial Breaks album?

1
Carl Parker | 11 January 2012 - 2:55pm

Oh I think Chuck Prophet

is a great choice but if you want Roy you can have him! I didn't imagine there would be a queue. Trouble is Pilot has already gone but I might check he's credentials. Cherishing The Lonesome by the way.

0
pedr0 | 11 January 2012 - 3:15pm

No sir

I am satisfied you are sufficiently imbued with Harper spirit to carry on with him. I'll stay with Chuck.

0
Carl Parker | 11 January 2012 - 7:05pm

Somewhat predictably

given my nom-de-blog, I'll have Scott Walker

0
Humphrey Plugg | 11 January 2012 - 2:56pm

Neil Young, please

Then no matter what I say, I'll always be able to argue with myself and say I'm wrong

2
Oscar Patterson | 11 January 2012 - 2:58pm

Surprised no-one's taken

Steely Dan

Mine.

1
PeteWingrave | 11 January 2012 - 3:03pm

I'll have Del Amitri

Only joking. I claim the 'I am the Fly' hitmakers Wire please...

0
Dr Volume | 11 January 2012 - 8:21pm

Pet Shop Boys, please...

...though I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing.

2
Banbury Cake | 11 January 2012 - 3:20pm

Go on. I'll play

Thea Gilmore

0
Gatz | 11 January 2012 - 3:20pm

Spinal Tap!

Definitely not an expert but I would REALLY enjoy becoming one

0
Fazackerly | 11 January 2012 - 3:25pm

Julian Cope

Now who's the Laughing Boy?

0
thecheshirecat | 11 January 2012 - 3:25pm

Did you get the last album...

... the 'Black Sheep' one that is, reportedly, a 45-minute recording of Cope and a chum in a neolithic cave banging stones together and droning unintelligibly over the top?

I'm not taking the piss.

Is it called Orcadia?

0
Tippy Wooder | 11 January 2012 - 5:56pm

Part of being a true friend and discerning fan

Is knowing when to say 'No'.

2
thecheshirecat | 11 January 2012 - 7:43pm

For the sake of career context...

... I'd like to hear it.

Out of curiosity (I've not been listening closely since Autogeddon, really) I bought the 'teaser' digital e.p. - Grain House - which was 15 minutes of similar "communing with a higher power / trouser-coughing into a mic and seeing if it sells", but recorded in... erm... the ruins of a grain house.

I listened to it just the once, and filed it away on my hard-drive. Despite the fact that I will surely never be of the mind to listen to it again, I was pleased to have heard it - it has provided me with anecdotal power amongst the "early 80s" crowd (era, not age) down my local far in excess of the £1.79 I paid.

And, you know, I've probably contributed to keeping Julian's tennis court clean-and-trim.

0
Tippy Wooder | 11 January 2012 - 9:10pm

Post Autogeddon

20 Mothers is well worth a listen. When he toured that album, for my money he was at the top of his live game.
Interpreter, which followed, isn't half bad either.

0
thecheshirecat | 12 January 2012 - 10:04pm

Seconded on 20 Mothers

I hosted a Cope PA in Portsmouth just before Interpreter came out. My abiding memory is of him trying to explain the box the album was going to come in to me, not getting very far, and summing it up by saying "It's... just a vibe"

0
maggieloveshopey | 15 January 2012 - 8:10pm

Any Trouble

I don't see a great deal of overtime piling up, frankly.

2
skirky | 11 January 2012 - 3:32pm

i dont know

as i will charge you with the task of finding out where on legal earth i can find CD's or downloads of the third and forth albums...

Im waiting!

0
simontyler | 11 January 2012 - 5:37pm

Yep

*joins queue*

0
man.of.soup | 11 January 2012 - 6:56pm

Are we including 'Live at The Venue'?

If not, then Beat Goes On reissued Wrong End of the Race (I still claim it was my idea btw) on BGOCD295 a while ago. Their website tends to be a bit clunky, but if you email Mike at the warehouse he should be able to help you out. If not, there are a few on Amazon at the moment.
Is that the sort of thing?

1
skirky | 11 January 2012 - 9:21pm

apes, ivory and peacocks to your door

I will check out BGO web. Any news on the eponymous third album, originally on EMI america and now seems all but lost.

0
simontyler | 11 January 2012 - 10:19pm

We live in hope.

but no.

0
skirky | 11 January 2012 - 10:40pm

Is everyody on the floor?

I'll take Scooter. Someone needs to stick up for them around here.

0
Art Vandelay | 11 January 2012 - 3:35pm
Dadwardo | 12 January 2012 - 7:27am

David Byrne / TH

When they were miserable. Though I remember a poster on here claiming they never were. Encore une autre reve disparu.

Failing that, Motown. Can't guarantee any accuracy but it will at least prompt me to have a dance round the living room

0
FakeGeordie | 11 January 2012 - 3:39pm

Unsurprisingly

I'll take Elvis Costello

(althou The Rutles are tempting) no, Elvis

0
DogFacedBoy | 11 January 2012 - 3:59pm

Gah!

I was hoping for EC! I challenge you to a TRIVIA DUEL!!

0
DrJ | 11 January 2012 - 5:43pm

thats fighting talk where i come from*

I choose Steve Turner as my second and the battle dress to be green shirts with new lace sleeves and red shoes

* or anywhere really

0
DogFacedBoy | 11 January 2012 - 6:28pm

Wot?

No trousers?

0
madfox | 11 January 2012 - 7:00pm

Pixies

ta

0
David Sutherland | 11 January 2012 - 3:59pm

Weller

I'll take him in The Jam and The Style Council, and up to and including Wild Wood and post Floorboards Up (say 1994-2005?). That bit in the middle where he became Mr Dad Rock somebody else can have.

Time Share!

0
SimonL | 11 January 2012 - 4:00pm

Simon

can you recommend any good Jam related sites especially ones with photographs, i often search them out but haven't come across a really decent one yet, thanks, ps. love the blog!

0
Kay Lester | 11 January 2012 - 4:49pm

cheers

Dont know theres a huge number out there, lots of 'mod' things around the place mind, and a lot of them may have Weller things hidden away as well as decent live bootlegs etc. This is a good starting point for all sorts of things though:

http://musiccornershop.blogspot.com/

0
SimonL | 11 January 2012 - 5:58pm

.

many thanks

0
Kay Lester | 11 January 2012 - 7:31pm

Hope..

.. that Yann appreciates the publicity Simon !

Can I be as bold as to challenge your claim to three quarters of PW career ? Surely you can only have The Jam Or The Style Council OR Paul Weller Solo ? To claim all 3 is just selfish.

To be pedantic I'll have the Paul Weller Movement, King Truman & Johns Boys

0
the mvps | 11 January 2012 - 10:32pm

Heh

Like I said, time share.

Or a 'council' of Weller?

0
SimonL | 11 January 2012 - 11:17pm

Ha Simon,

Your Weller periods exactly match my own, love it all except the dad rock years of heavy soul etc for me got better again from 22 Dreams.

0
art vanderlay | 14 January 2012 - 12:56pm

Ploddy

It was all a bit knackered sounding, some really good singles, but the rest just sounded tired. Whereas Floorboards Up, with it's Dr Feelgood sound, right down to the Wilko guitars just sounds like Weller was going back to his roots, and I think he's been really good ever since. Have You Made Up Your Mind is officially now one of my top ten Weller songs of all time, which isn't bad for a tune written about 30 years into a career.

0
SimonL | 14 January 2012 - 3:56pm

Give me Daryl Hall (please please)

I'll look after him for you.

0
Fangie | 11 January 2012 - 4:00pm

Since Bob hasn't taken them

I'll have The Hold Steady.

Even though they don't come from Liverpool.

0
Paul Waring | 11 January 2012 - 4:08pm

Couldn't decide.

It was between R.E.M., THS and Pixies. But R.E.M. are the band I know most about.

0
Bob | 11 January 2012 - 4:59pm

Morrissey

Excellent game. Can I Just take the solo years please? I was too young for the Smiths...
And if we do authors I'd like Douglas Coupland. Ta.

0
JohnH | 11 January 2012 - 4:10pm

The Smiths

I suppose I'd better have The Smiths, then. *sigh*

0
Tippy Wooder | 11 January 2012 - 5:53pm

XTC, please

We've got an Uffington White Horse painted in our kitchen, so they should feel at home...

0
GCU Grey Area | 11 January 2012 - 4:33pm

Well I've got one on my upper right arm

No really, I have.

But, it's OK. I went for near neighbour Copey.

1
thecheshirecat | 11 January 2012 - 5:42pm

I've often thought

that if I ever got myself inked, I would do exactly that. My favourite place in the whole world.

0
Lying Doggo | 11 January 2012 - 6:11pm

Wot?

My upper right arm is your favourite place in the whole world?
What a strange place this blog is becoming.

0
thecheshirecat | 12 January 2012 - 10:02pm

Tattoo

Oh, fab! Wish I had the bottle to go and get that done.

Had thought of cutting one into our lawn, and filling it with white gravel...

1
GCU Grey Area | 11 January 2012 - 10:13pm

Since Bruce is gone...

... I’ll take Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes. Yes, all of them.

0
Tim Turner | 11 January 2012 - 4:39pm

Baggsy

me the who- if only for memorising the catalogue number for the my generation single when I was 14. It's been downhill ever since really.

The Fall, thanks very much

I'll have Heppos favorite band.

Even more genius here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018z344

0

I was going to go for The

I was going to go for The Fall but I worry I might have blinked last year & missed 3 albums & 6 lineup changes :)

seanioio | 11 January 2012 - 5:23pm

U2

may as well stick me oar in, i won't be defending their output post Pop but i know a thing or two about them.

0
Kay Lester | 11 January 2012 - 4:53pm

The Waterboys

I'll take them.

0
Uncle Wheaty | 11 January 2012 - 5:05pm

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

please.

1
kb | 11 January 2012 - 5:06pm

The Monkees

Snubbed by the Rock'n'roll Hall Of Fame, but not by me.

0
Barry Vaughan | 11 January 2012 - 5:14pm

The Monkees for me

No, seriously.

0
MyAmericanMate | 11 January 2012 - 5:17pm

Barry

Beat you to the furry ones. How about Gorillaz?

0
pedr0 | 11 January 2012 - 5:23pm

Sorry MAM

I am prepared to let you have Davy Jones on a free transfer though.

0
Barry Vaughan | 11 January 2012 - 5:32pm

Or he could have

... Papa Nez?

0
man.of.soup | 11 January 2012 - 6:58pm

I'm afraid not

Nez is non-negotiable.

0
Barry Vaughan | 11 January 2012 - 7:19pm

Jimi Hendrix..

please. Still love him a lot.

1
Declan | 11 January 2012 - 5:19pm

I'll have Grace Slick

Oh alright the rest of Jefferson Airplane can come along as well!

0
Gordon Kerr | 11 January 2012 - 5:21pm

Decisions, decisions

I suppose it will have to be STACKRIDGE otherwise I will be forcibly ejected from the Rhubarb Thrashing Society forthwith.

1
Beany | 11 January 2012 - 5:31pm

I'll take Joe Jackson

Jumping Jive, symphonic albums, the whole shebang...

1
whitehorsehill | 11 January 2012 - 5:31pm

I've been unable to come here all day

But felt confident that nobody else would want JJ, yet here you are. Damn you.

0
matthew | 11 January 2012 - 8:49pm

Bah!

As I scrolled down I was thinking if there'd one artist I'd get by default it's him.

0
DLM | 12 January 2012 - 12:10am

Radiohead or Waits

No one's seemed to have claimed either. Radiohead maybe a bit too Pitchfork for the Word and Waits a bit too much of an enigma, but I'll have a go at both if you would like.

All together now

"I'll tell you all my secrets but I lie about my past, won't you send me off to bed forever more..."

0
badger_king | 11 January 2012 - 5:34pm

Come on

play the game! Only one allowed. Tough choice but I think Tom needs representing.

0
pedr0 | 11 January 2012 - 5:44pm

How about, you take Waits & I'll take Radiohead badger?

It was a toss-up between them & Elliott Smith for me, but either'll do!

0
andielou | 11 January 2012 - 9:15pm

Ok Waits it is then

*Mumbles incomprehensibly*

Ok, here's a good one, apparently a cockroach can survive for two weeks without a head, whereas a common house fly can only live a maximum of two weeks.

You heard it from the man himself. It must be true.

0
badger_king | 14 January 2012 - 11:51am

I want Waits

to add to my mid-to-late period Cave. I want the set.

0
LastRoseofSummer | 26 January 2012 - 6:28pm

Nick Drake

As I'm feeling mellow. Happy to bat for Laughing Len if need be.

0
Martin Simmonds | 11 January 2012 - 5:48pm

Cathal Coughlan

in all his incarnations, please - Microdisney, Fatima Mansions, Bubonique and solo. Ta.

0
badartdog | 11 January 2012 - 5:48pm

Hmmm

Late to the thread so it's a drag to see Costello, The Beatles, The Monkees and Sparks already gone. I was about to choose my current obsession of Move/Roy Wood/ELO/Jeff Lynne, but I don't know enough about them (yet) so...

After minimal thought, can I have the solo, wacky-baccy Sir Macca of thumbs-aloft himself please?
{PAUL MCCARTNEY}

0
DrJ | 11 January 2012 - 5:50pm

Right

I'll have Prince (I take it we are allowed black artists? I wasn't sure), up to and including Diamonds and Pearls.

Or Stevie Wonder up to and including Hotter Than July.

1
JoLean | 11 January 2012 - 5:51pm

skinny white boys with guitars

Lol had noticed that. Considered Prince too, but know more bout Weller. Not many women in The list either.

0
SimonL | 11 January 2012 - 6:05pm

Two birds with one stone

I guess I'll have to join in your little game then and improve both statistics by choosing Taj Mahal (who else ?)

Please note that I have promptly forgotten just about everything that I've ever learned about Mr Mahal, and all your questions will be answered with complete fibs. It will however be a lot more entertaining than the dullness of truth.
Also note that I know nothing about Indian palaces.

1
Locust | 12 January 2012 - 2:20am

As Wire

have gone as I expected, Dr V I'm looking at you. Then I will take the band I idolised as a grubby teen.

The Wonder Stuff and Miles Hunt solo.

Any questions?

*hello, is this thing on, etc*

0
jimmyshoes01 | 11 January 2012 - 5:53pm

Sorry! China Crisis

are still going begging,

0
Dr Volume | 11 January 2012 - 8:24pm

I have a question

Is there going to be a re-recorded 21st anniversary edition of Never Loved Elvis, or has Malc Treece's flounce put the kibosh on that?

0
Merv | 2 February 2012 - 3:29pm

The Church

Not the ecclesiastical dope peddlers, although you have to admit they've had a few good tunes along the way, but the Australian band of the same name, all 30 years and 23 albums. Surely the only band ever to have a drummer named 'Ploog" and song titles that read like a Dulux catalogue: Aura, Ripple, Paradox, Lustre...

Please don't ring the helpline until I've had a chance to hire extra staff to deal with the volume of calls.

and cruelly underrated.

Leave em alone....they`re mine. Actually, I can help out part time school hours only.

0
johnsimpson1965 | 11 January 2012 - 10:16pm

Ah, was going to jump in with this one myself...

...though secretly glad someone else has, I probably devote too much of my time to this subject already.

0
nickpeters | 18 January 2012 - 9:54am

Dylan

As Slick seems to have opted out of this awesome responsibilty.

0
wezz | 11 January 2012 - 6:16pm

Stand by for

one upmanship via obscure questioning.

My first being - Why does The Dylan Encyclopedia http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bob-Dylan-Encyclopedia-Michael-Gray/dp/082646933... not have an entry for Richie Havens ? When you consider how many people get a listing for "once walked in front of a car that Dylan was travelling in whilst it was stopped at traffic lights" how come this cat has been overlooked ?

This is where you reveal yourself to be Michael Gray :-(

0
Slick | 11 January 2012 - 10:24pm

Not Michael Gray

but the answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.

0
wezz | 12 January 2012 - 12:15am

Wilco

I'll also field enquiries about Tweedy solo and Uncle Tupelo until someone claims them (some chance!)

0
Neil Dyson | 11 January 2012 - 6:17pm

I shall have

The Electric Light Orchestra, in all their glory.

0
titmus | 11 January 2012 - 6:21pm

Still bizarrely unclaimed

Bogshed
Manhattan Transfer
Graham Central Station
Red Box
Matumbi
Meat Beat Manifesto
Stump
The Ovaltineys
Awesome Dre and the Hardcore Committee
Severed Head and the Neckfuckers

Come on. Any takers (I've already got mine)

... on reflection, this is the best Jools line-up ever (apart from the made-up one, of course)

0
Moose the Mooche | 11 January 2012 - 6:44pm

Bogshed!

I'm happy to double up with them, if no-one else is interested.
Altogether now: "Fat Lad Exam Failure! Fat Lad! Fat Lad!"

My own, personal...

...Depeche Mode, please.

0

0
jhastings | 11 January 2012 - 7:20pm

well

I've looked through the list and it appears Elvis Presley hasn't been picked. So thats my choice. If he has already gone I'll have Serge Gainsbourg.

0
Andy Mackenzie | 11 January 2012 - 7:38pm

Please can I have..............

..............Half Man Half Biscuit

0
southstand | 11 January 2012 - 7:42pm

Taking the biscuit

I was amazed it took so long for someone to bag them.

0
LastRoseofSummer | 26 January 2012 - 6:31pm

Thin Lizzy please

I wish I had similar in-depth knowledge in other (more useful) areas of my life.

0
rhinoneil | 11 January 2012 - 7:51pm

don't know where I will put them.....

...but can I have The Go-Betweens

0
JJH | 11 January 2012 - 7:51pm

My all time favourites please...

...Creedence Clearwater Revival and then all things Fogerty...

0
AlinCumbria | 11 January 2012 - 8:04pm

Can you tell me

is John Fogerty the grumpiest rock 'n' roller of them all ? And so very very unbending - I think I'd have seen my own brother on his death bed, even if we had had a bit of falling out over the band.

But CCR - what a band ! (see this month's Uncut for a good new interview with Fogerty).

1
Slick | 12 January 2012 - 2:56pm

Tough one that...

I always feel Van is the grumpiest of them all but he isn't really a rock n' roller. I think Chuck Berry has to beat Fogerty to the title. Readng the Uncut interview, however, gave me some sympathy for Doug Clifford and Stu Cook for the first time.

0
drneil | 26 January 2012 - 6:58pm

Not much of a surprise this one:

Stiff Little Fingers

and as a secondary subject: Sex Pistols

0

Peter Gabriel is my man

0

The Chameleons

Ta very much.

0

How can we have reached this far and not mentioned The Rolling Stones?

It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it. All 50 years of it.

0

Joni

I'll take Ms Mitchell if she's not already been claimed

Bowie gone

I'll take Anthony Newley.. unless Danny wants to step in...

0
Gurney-Slade | 11 January 2012 - 10:19pm

What kind of fool are you?

Actually I have just recorded my parents copy of "Stop The World I Want To Get Off" to MP3. Some of it is really good. Some of it causes me to lose the will to live, not least that his character throughout is called 'Littlechap'. I mean why would you advertise that fact?

0

I'll take good care of them.

0

Matthew Sweet for me.

No-one else has claimed him? Surely not.

I'll have Big Star as well. And Teenage Fanclub.

What as in

The Scatterlings of Africa? Didn't he beat Paul Simon to it by several years?

0
Dr Volume | 13 January 2012 - 1:09am

Scatterlings

Yes, that's the one. And yes, his first album (Universal Men) was in 1979, seven years before Graceland. I was lucky enough to be seeing him perform as an amateur several years before that, too.

0
Jorrox | 14 January 2012 - 12:12pm

Ah!

Then it was you who told me that a certain tall trombonist had moved back to his home village, after your August gig in the town where The Famous Dixons played their second last ever Caledonian gig to date. According to the fragrant Mrs Tall Trombonist this is innaccurate.

..and she should know although I don't think she is Italian.

0
57vintage | 19 January 2012 - 3:45pm

Aberdeen gig?

I must have been misinformed.....

0
Jorrox | 19 January 2012 - 4:02pm

Yes, the very one....

...and we loved your version of Big Time Operator.

Tall trombonist and kidnapped former JB saxman in cahoots with offshoot singer have released a US album which I can only seem to get on download. Previews sound fabulous but I'm sure you know that.

What of "the Officer's" latest release in your opinion?

0
57vintage | 26 January 2012 - 5:52pm

Pete?

I haven't actually heard it yet. Nor the other one. Just been a bit busy.

0

Pete's new one

Bloody great, and he's doing some live dates, you should go

1
LastRoseofSummer | 26 January 2012 - 6:36pm

Like The Tall Trombonist...

...I am laying low in the North of Scotland and Major's privatisation of BR means I can no longer bunk trains in the style of them Famous Dixons, so cannot attend the shows. Pete has said he will be coming north of the border, though, so I'll take the opportunity then.

See you in Glasgow Jorrox!

220+ responses

and no-one's taken Blur. I'd have expected them to go in the first fifty.

0
titmus | 12 January 2012 - 6:20pm

Sorry I'm late

It was hard to reach a decision. There are 2 bands who act as kryptonite on my critical faculties - The Ramones and The Fleshtones.

But after much pondering, I decided to take a different tack, so I am proud to announce that I represent Alice Coltrane.

No takers

for Midlake, John Grant, Silver Seas, that bloke from the day on the river (whatisname - Steamboat Willie or something?) or indeed Eliza Carthy. We must be a terrible disappointment to the management.

2
Captain Underpants | 12 January 2012 - 7:29pm

I am astounded

that no one has already bagged Soft Cell. So I stake my claim now!

Have I missed it

or am I still in time to take Brian Eno. Please.

1
grahamt | 12 January 2012 - 9:43pm

I'll take The Coral

seeing as my other choices (Manics, Decemberists, Radiohead, Nick Cave, Beatles, Belle and Sebastian) have been claimed already.

This reminds me of being at school.

0
Tom | 12 January 2012 - 9:56pm

Captain Beefheart

for me please.
My qualificatons being:-
I've been inside Trout Mask house.
Drumbo's a mate, so I'll give him a transatlantic bell if any tricky questions come up.

1
ianess | 12 January 2012 - 10:30pm

Eric Clapton................i'll take him....

....The Roosters, Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie, Derek & The Domino's and solo.

0
Almost Simon | 12 January 2012 - 10:35pm

Since my top two are already gone...

I'll have half a pound of your finest Aimee Mann, please

PS I was too late for Lizzy and ELO, sigh...

0
Trevor_Raggatt | 12 January 2012 - 10:40pm

0
Beany | 12 January 2012 - 11:01pm

0
jonnyartist | 12 January 2012 - 11:16pm

1
billy bonkers | 12 January 2012 - 11:41pm

Bugger..

The Greatest American rock and roll band ever, Creedence have gone. So to has Van the Man (though good luck - he'll probably sue you). So I'll take Bjork. I'm not an expert, but it'll curry favour with the good lady wife...

0
blueboy | 13 January 2012 - 12:07am

SInce Marillion, Zappa and the Dan are already claimed...

..I'll take the mighty King Crimson then.

1
oops | 13 January 2012 - 12:11am

The Crowes, please

Black Crowes for me, none more Rock and (or) Roll!

0
LovingCup | 13 January 2012 - 12:36am

Madness

Thought someone would have claimed the 'Our House' hitmakers before now....

1
Stratosphear | 13 January 2012 - 1:18am

Little Feat

Obviously.

0

Fat man in the bathtub

Can I share? There's enough of Lowell to go round

0
LastRoseofSummer | 26 January 2012 - 6:40pm

No one

Has taken the Sex Pistols.
I am not afraid and will.
(Probably because Josef K was a bit of a cop out)

0
drilltime | 13 January 2012 - 1:18am

Lou Reed

I will take Lou because it seems no one else likes him here and it's a wee shame...

0
Stephen G | 13 January 2012 - 1:27am

The backlash is in full swing,

but I still love Elbow, so I'll take them thank you very much.

2
heshofcheese | 13 January 2012 - 1:28am

Backlash?

Must have missed it. They seemed well-represented in the Festive 50. Maybe the silent majority of Word readers like them more than the views of a couple of the bloganistas would have us believe.

Me? I love 'em. Unashamedly.

2
Red Umpire | 13 January 2012 - 10:54am

Ah well, it's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it

ELP for me.
That's Emerson Lake and Palmer to you.
Tarkus is really good, honestly, if you really listen to it, you see the first section is in 10/8, divided up into a bar of 4/8 and two bars of 3/8, and the melodic shape is based on the interval of a fourth, a common Emerson compositional device, and - oh never mind...

1
Mousey | 13 January 2012 - 7:40am

Can we have more than one?

I'm a man yet I can multitask, you know.

0
doomah | 13 January 2012 - 10:40am

Well once everyones had a chance

we might do a backhand!

0
