Chubby Checker: Week 3

drakeygirl's picture

It's Monday morning. It's Chubby Checker time, and the Massive's minimisers should report in below. Empty your pockets, hell, take all your clothes off, use the facilities, and step on the scales!

[We lost another 36½lbs (16½kg) between us last week, bringing our total up to 77½ (just over 35kg). This happens to match the average weight of compilation CDs shared at a Massive Mingle].

We've reached the end of the third week, and now is about the time the New Year's Resolution gym bunnies give up exercising and instead start an interesting experiment in just how much mould can grow on a wet towel stuffed inside a kitbag left in the car boot for three months.

Don't let that be you. Keep on keeping on for the long haul and you'll see some proper results.

Incidentally, I used to work part-time behind the bar in a gym. One chap had a very good con going on. He was obviously telling his partner he was off to get himself fit. However, the reality was very different. He used to come in every Sunday, have four or so pints and a jumbo pack of peanuts while he watched the footy on the Sky big screen. Then - and this is the sneaky bit - he used to have a very hot shower, come out with a flushed face and wet hair, and go home. After three months of this, he'd put on half a stone. Chubby Checkers - DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

Song is Stevie Wonder - Keep On Running

Week 3: Lost 0lbs

Total: 5lbs

Comments: Not done anything I shouldn’t have this week, apart from a couple of vodkas which tasted of sheer relief after getting a difficult speech over with the other day, but that’s the only alcohol that’s passed my lips so far in January. The hard work will pay off in the long term - this is just one of those weight fluctuations that can be a bit frustrating. Acting on Vorgongod’s advice, I’ve bought myself a waterproof MP3 player, and can’t wait to try it out in the swimming pool.

Tips: Don’t turn up at the swimming pool at 7am on a Saturday morning, all excited about trying out your new waterproof MP3 player, and smug about being such a keen, early-rising, dedicated exerciser, UNLESS YOU HAVE CHECKED WHETHER THERE’S A BLOODY SWIMMING GALA ON first.

Week 3 :3lbs

Total : 7lbs

Comments : I'm a bit taken aback really. Had to stand on the scales a few times just to be sure I was reading them right. I'm on the cusp of having lost 8lbs and I've not really done anything radical. Cut down a little on the wine but continued to allow myself the occasional hot cross bun and Mini Magnum.

Two weeks in La-La Land beckons, so I'm going to try and behave but such is the boredom that eating and a beer or 4 often feels like the only way to survive. I'm not sure I can manage total abstinence but I'm planning a "more salad / no dessert" regime. Won't be back in time for the next 2 weigh-ins but will be checking in on the thread.

Well done.

See you in a couple of weeks. Here's a stamp for your passport:

drakeygirl | 23 January 2012 - 10:16am

Me

This Week 2lbs
Total 2lbs

Just being a bit less naughty. Basically, eating less and moving more.

1
JoLean | 23 January 2012 - 10:02am

One small step for........

This week -1 lb
Total -3 lb

A small step I know, but I was quite pleased with it. I'd stuck to the food combining diet which meant that I’d eaten pretty well. I'd also allowed myself (way ahead of intended schedule) a couple of pints, two glasses of Champaign following a celebration and a glass of red following a commiseration.

I think I'd have done a little better but I let the exercise go. A few bad weather days meant my lunchtime walks suffered and I didn't compensate.

To make up for this, after I jumped of the scales yesterday morning I did a ten mile section of the London Loop walk. God that hurt!

For this week, I will ensure I move about a bit more, and I'll be stricter on the alcohol front (I say that now!)

Tip
Toast with real butter counts as a legitimate breakfast on the food combining diet. (Butter is a neutral, not a protein). This is brilliant news!

This week: 3lbs
Total: 4lbs

After a slow start, the new regime is beginning to pay off. Trouble is, sometimes when I've done loads of work at the gym, I think: "Surely, a bit of chocolate can't hurt now." And I still drink far too much wine at the weekend.

Still, heading in the right direction!

No change

Last week: 0lb
Total: -3lb

I stuck to the program but there has been no change on the scales. I don't mind really, because I have had weeks like this before. I have now been doing this since September. There was an exciting plummet in the first couple of months but I haven't managed to keep losing at that rate. As per my weight chart, I had a long plateau in late November, but the momentum picked up again over the last few weeks. I am definitely in this for the long haul, and I have been doing it for long enough now that I have developed better habits. Most of the time I don't miss the foods that I have given up. Well done to all on the excellent progress so far, and thanks Drakeygirl for the organising and encouragement.

I see your graph and I raise you.....

I think this has upped the anti on these posts.

I like the idea of a graph as it gives a visual image that over time tells a story that might otherwise be ignored. If I knew how to make a spreadsheet take account of pounds and ounces I'd do one too!

A quick glance at a pencil scribbled one (that is far easier for me to create than an excel version) tells me that last year, after losing two stone, I was able to keep it within a few pounds of that level for about six months.

That has genuinely surprised me as I previously thought that I was constantly gaining throughout the summer.

Anyway, for next time...... I see your graph and I raise you "A Set of Chest X-rays"

Martin Simmonds | 23 January 2012 - 2:22pm

The trend is your friend

Looking too closely at the daily ups and downs (or even comparing one week to the next) can be a bit soul-destroying. Some days I have been up or down by as much as 3 or 4 pounds. Unlike the Grand Old Duke, you can get too much up when you are down and vise-versa. If you know what I mean.

I use the graph so that I can see the trend (the red line on the graph). As long as the trend keeps going down, and usually each day's entry is below the trend line, I know that all is well.

Next week: how algebra saved my life.

Myfitnesspal does graphs

And it's free - see the link in Gavin's post below

0
fortuneight | 23 January 2012 - 9:10pm

They are not...

... In Fazackerly's league though. They're giving me serious graph envy!

0
Gavin Adam | 23 January 2012 - 9:15pm

The graphs I use are free online

https://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/HackDiet/

I also use My Fitness Pal sometimes to track my carbohydrates (which is not really what they designed it for).

But I am a geek about this. I think it gets that way when you live it every day for months.

0
Fazackerly | 24 January 2012 - 10:54am

Might I recommend...

Weightbot - it's an iPhone app. Enter your weight on a date, tell it some details and it'll graph and calculate things for you. It's not as detailed as the graph above but it's good for capturing the basics and giving you a trend to follow.

DrJ

This week - 2lbs
Total - 9lbs

I would have taken staying the same this week, so weight loss is quite a surprise. I had to go to Dublin for 2 days and I met my nemesis: hotel breakfast. They should give it it's proper name: bacon eating competition. I did an hour in the hotel "gym" to compensate.

Onwards!

1
DrJ | 23 January 2012 - 11:52am

No change

and that's what I'm aiming for.

The fat is coming off and the muscle is starting to show beneath. Pecs slowly returning to pre Christmas glory and the top two of the six pack are blinking into the sunlight.

17 days in a row off booze will be shattered this week with drinks planned for Tues, Weds, Fri and Sat. But then its off again for 2 weeks. That is the secret of my success.

2
jimmyshoes01 | 23 January 2012 - 12:59pm

Oh go on

someone up me. Or is muscle not allowed. Chubby clique. I'm off.

*smiley thing*

0
jimmyshoes01 | 23 January 2012 - 5:21pm

Oh alright then

Hope you've not been hanging around one of those new fangled gym places though, you'll be bad for my image!

Vorgongod

Week 2

Lost - 1.5 lbs (I'm taking that half!)
Total - 3.5 lbs

Still swimming (6 days out of seven). Not sofa snacking. generally not boozing or eating lardy poo poo food, but I'll admit that over the course of the week I allowed myself two beers, 2 small portions of chips, two large Aero bars and two bags of cheese and onion crisps.
All this would have been but a starter for me in 2011.....

Dreading next week 'cos I feel I've lost all the 'easy weight' I'm gonna lose now.

4
Vorgongod | 23 January 2012 - 1:11pm

Locust Week 3

This week: -1,1 Kg
Total loss -2,3 Kg

A really good week for me after a slow start.
The difference being that instead of just sitting on my fat arse during the weekend (ignoring the voice in my head saying "but I've been good all week and weekends aren't weekends unless they're unhealthy!") I started to make myself exercise for an hour every day.
And my weekend menu gave me a choice between a vegetable omelette or a vegetable omelette with bacon in it. And that's actually not a bad choice, I didn't miss my usual fatty grub at all.
In fact, I don't feel that I'm missing out foodwise, I haven't been any hungrier during these three weeks (if anything, I've been less hungry because I eat food that makes you feel full for longer) and I haven't cut anything out in particular.
I eat bread, I eat cheese, I even eat a small sweet treat every day after my walk, as a reward. Usually a nice cookie. And, as I said, I eat bacon.
I just eat less of these things than I used to, and a lot more veggies.
Still a long way to go though...but with the kind of diet and exercising that I'm doing now I think I can go on for a long time without losing my determination. I don't think I'm the sort of person who could ever be thin, but if I can get rid of the permanent lifebuoy hiding my waist I would be very satisfied...

2
Locust | 23 January 2012 - 1:31pm

A strange week

Still in the middle of a house move, and lots of stress. I'm managing to eat ok, despite the odd wispa bar and large bag of kettle chips.

The problem is... my head. I just don't feel very good about myself at the moment, and I don't know why. yes, I've put on a bit of weight since the summer, but that was inevitable when I stopped going to the gym. And I don't think I've put on that much. Indeed it's coming off again, gently, since I stopped the comfort eating.

But I really don't feel good about myself at the moment. I'm continually squeezing my love handles, like that'll achieve anything other than make me feel more crappy.

Anyway. I feel better for saying all that out loud. It does help to let the light in.

This week I'm going to concentrate on getting the house sorted and talking kindly to myself.

All the best to you xxxx

Hannah | 23 January 2012 - 1:47pm

Lost: 2.5 pounds.

That's since Xmas when I last weighed myself. Seeing as I've not had a drop of booze since New Year I was hoping I'd lost a bit more than that. I seem to be able to get through the day quite well but then go a bit crazy just before I hit the sack on whatever nibbles I can find. Still, onwards and upwards, or downwards weightwise.

1
Mr Fade | 23 January 2012 - 2:07pm

No change but no gain

so happy with that.

This week: 0lbs
Overall: lost 6lbs

Heavy weekend last week. Managed 2 good walks and a gym session so probably worked off some excess there.

This weekend is a write-off. Mrs. B's birthday - lunch, dinner and next morning breakfast in some very posh restaurants. I expect my body to be a bit heavier and my wallet to be considerably lighter!

1
niallb | 23 January 2012 - 2:16pm

Week 1 ish

This week. 3.5lb
Total. 4.5lb

Pretty happy with that as we were still eating up biscuits at the beginning of the week. Another pound and I pass the first milestone - where the number of stones drops to a lower number. Let's hope I can do as well this next week.

1
DavidG | 23 January 2012 - 4:00pm

Up With This I Will Not Put!

Loss This Week: 0 lbs

Total Loss: 2 lbs

This is so much harder than last year, or am I just being an idle b*****d? Either way, it is time to ...

The diet is pretty much OK, although I may need to reduce the daily calorie target if I don't get some results this week. What I have to do is more exercise.

So this is going to be "Move-About-More Week". I'm just back from a brisk one hour's walk and plan to do this every day this week. Then we'll see how hard this is really going to be!

Soup of the Week: Tuscan Bean

I just managed to stop myself adding pasta to turn it into Pasta e Fagioli. It's still lovely though!

1
Gavin Adam | 23 January 2012 - 5:09pm

If it's not rude to ask

what's your daily calorie target? I'm not sure what I should be aiming at.

0
Mr Fade | 23 January 2012 - 5:59pm

My current target is 1790

I got to that by using this site - http://www.myfitnesspal.com/. I used the Goals section to enter my current and target weights and then the rate at which I want to get from A to B. The answer - for me - is then 1790. If I wanted to lose wight more rapidly it would be lower and vice versa. I then use the Food Diary to keep track of what I eat and the Exercise section to record what I have done.

The site then keeps track of my daily achievements - and shows a useful Fat/Carb/Protein breakdown. If, like me, you are looking for a lifestyle change not a quick weight loss, then this analysis helps you work out what is good for you and what isn't. I've been using it for about a year now and it works for me. (Other sites, tools, diets, etc are available)

That's a great help.

I fell off the ole wagon train this week. ( in my defence, I had three birthday parties in 10 days )so I gained 4 lbs. However, Im still down 4 llbs in all since the start of the month.

Hurrah!

And I know much temptation was put in your way, this week, so that's brilliant. You just earned yourself your first marker, Mr C*kes. (We need to do something about your name...)

Your encouragement is much appreciated!

Just dropping by

to say I've lost 9lbs since Christmas. I found this brilliant diet in India. It's called "amoebic dysentery".

It's not too hard to follow, you just eat whatever you fancy, and wait... I thoroughly recommend it - in fact if anyone wants me to come round and lick them, my rates are very reasonable.

we are not despondent, lets just see what week 4 brings..

plumb1909 | 23 January 2012 - 11:14pm

Since New Year

Lost 6.6lbs after adopting the Waist Disposal diet, despite a KFC pigout last week.

A good start, but I had a week of camping that involved lots of outdoor activity. Now that I am back at work, progress may slow down. Nice to have fried eggs and bacon in the morning, I must say. Have cut down dramatically on bread, crisps and fizzy drinks and have increased the water intake. Have also made a point of eating more fish/seafood.

Still drink tea and coffee and a couple of beers most days.

1
Austin | 23 January 2012 - 11:30pm

Not quite sure what I've lost

I keep "forgetting" to weigh myself.

Have managed to get hold of 'Escape the Diet Trap' by Dr John Briffa, but haven't read it yet! (Spent last week reading 'Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations' biography of E instead).

2
Mr Sparks | 23 January 2012 - 11:34pm

Okay..

This week: 0.4 lbs

Total: 0.4lbs

I'm happy enough with this. I was going well until Tuesday evening when a close friend of mine lost his very short fight with cancer. Then all thoughts of dieting went out the window!

I've started to get back to some sort of normality since yesterday so hopefully next week I'll have shed a bit more. I've been able to cut back on the bread so that's one bit of good news!

Anyway, if nobody minds I'll forgo the usual weight-related video clip and post a clip that my mate would have enjoyed! This one is for you Diarmuid!

4
humphreym | 24 January 2012 - 12:42am

Sorry to hear that, Humphrey.

An awful thing to deal with.
Maybe your friend is having a little smile, though. You might not have thought the video was weight-related, but it is by Thin Lizzy.
Keep your chins up and get back on track when you can.
