Chubby Checker: Week 2
Posted by drakeygirl on 16 January 2012 - 8:41am.
It’s the end of Week 2 of Chubby Checker 2012.
The Massive’s mission to eat more healthily, do more exercise, and shift some flab is now in full swing.
In the first week of the new regime we managed to lose a whopping 41lbs (18.6kgs) between us. This just happens to be the exact weight of MC Hammer's gold pantaloons.*
*Probably.
So please check in below and tell us how you’ve been doing.
Let us know if you managed to lose any weight and share any tips you think others might find helpful.
Well done for continuing the challenge - any newcomers are welcome, by the way!

Comments: A good second week for me. Stepped up the swimming a bit - managed four swims of at least 45 minutes. I bought a new swimming costume, and trying it on in the changing rooms surrounded by unforgiving mirrors was a bloody good incentive to get exercising.
I’m cutting back considerably on the carbs, and munching on seeds and fruit for snacks. Had lots of opportunity to give in to temptation and didn’t waver. The trick now is to keep up this level of enthusiasm.
Tips: I’ve been learning a speech I’ve got to make that’s 10 minutes long. So I used my time in the pool to run through it, a few times over per session. If you’ve got things to plan, or something you need to run through in your head or think about in peace and quiet, then swimming is the ideal time to do this. It doesn’t half make the time fly by.
I always
get Geoffrey Rush to shake me by the shoulders roughly if I have problems with my speeches. Give him a bell.
I'm not including the quite hideous gain from last summers lows
But this week..
2lbs loss
I'm going to be 40 in September; I want to somewhat smaller then.
A quick recap
I checked in mere insomnia-fuelled hours ago. May as well repost what I said then, as little has changed in the six hours since.
Been a good week. it's been a hideously stressful month with the house move etc. and I've started back on the comfort eating. As soon as I moved, the stress lifted, along with the desire to comfort eat.
I'm still a way off my target, having put a bit of weight on from the summer, where I was at my slimmest. But, I'm just going to be kind to myself about it. heaven knows I've got enouhh stuff to deal with, without adding extra pressure on myself.
Onwards...
Off to a flying start
Lost 8lbs since the start of the year, went a whole 10 days without any beer, wine and cheese. Fell off the wagon this weekend but I m now back on with bells.
Went for a two hour walk with the beasties yesterday and so a rewarded myself with a few beers watching the footie on the box. Still, not bad
Also been helped as my 9 month old son is a lot more active and you have to have the reflexes of a cat around him
Well done.
You're not really on the fence about this weight loss thing at all, are you?
Congratulations, you are the first of the Chubby Checkers to earn a 7lb stamp!

Week 2 : Lost 0 lbs
Total : -4.5 lbs
Bit of a crap week really. Spent 3 days away from home visiting my Dad who was in hospital sadly getting confirmation he has bowel and bladder cancer. Given my diet whilst away was takeaways, bacon sandwiches and beer, I'm mildly relieved I hadn't gained weight.
Another visit hospital visit beckons for the end of this week - and then I'm away for 10 days on business in the USA, so there are more challenges to come. The endless buffet breakfasts and lunches and then business meals in the evening tend to pile the calories on, and are often the only bits of the day that offer any relief from death by Powerpoint. Still, I'll get a little Californian sunshine, and must ensure I'm no stranger to the salad bar.
Sorry to hear about your Dad.
Some things are a bit more important that losing weight. It sounds like there are some tough times ahead. Realising our parents aren't invincible is a shock.
Hope the business trip goes well. If you want to limit the damage, watch those American-sized portions when you're away. Despite what your mum used to tell you, you DON'T have to eat everything up on your plate. And steer clear of the salad dressings, as some of those can be packed with calories.
Good luck on all fronts.
Steady Start
Week 1 - Lost 3LB
Well pleased with that result, as I seem to recall eating a few good dinners! I laid off the demon drink apart from a diet lemonade sandy on Saturday night. (You can't have curry without a pint glass of something after all).
On the exercise front, a few lunchtime walks at a good pace plus a few more at the weekend (accompanied by an audio book).
I had some success last year with the food combining method (not mixing carbs and proteins in the same meal) and it’s been quite easy to slip straight back into that regime.
With that, and avoiding all the xmas cakes and biscuits, it’s been a fairly easy introductory week.
Tip - The diet lemonade shandy concept. By the weekend I felt that I needed a drink. Two pints of that really helped.

Week 1 : Lost 1lb

A pretty good week in terms of eating properly, and no drink at all during the week. Friday was a bit of a Guinness-fest, and work hours prevented me getting to the gym. Still, a good start to the year

Total this year: 3lb
I have been a very good boy. A goody two shoes. "Don't drink don't smoke - what do you do?" Actually Adam, I don't eat carbohydrates either. It was very difficult yesterday as it was Sunday lunch with the parents and having to refuse potatoes, three dessert choices (raspberry pavlova, pineapple upside down cake and chocolate mousse), post prandial chocolates, and sugar and milk from the coffee.
I haven't stopped eating this way since September and the weight loss has average just over a pound a week. I wish it was a bit quicker.
It's not going to plan
as I have lost 4 lb.
You may recall that i am trying to add muscle at the same time. That part isn't happening just yet due to ongoing injuries keeping my weights low.
Still, musn't grumble.
PS
thanks for posting the clip for one of my favourite songs ever.

Duane Allman on guitar no less. What a combo,Aretha and Duane.
Getting into it.
Low-carb diet is in full flight, by which I mean "low", not "no". I'm restricting myself to about 50-100g of carbohydrate a day, eating a lot of fresh veg, and seeing how it goes. Feels weird, though, with the lack of carbs: I'm starting to realise how much needless bulk there was in my diet before.
Not weighing yet.
50-100
No doubt you have thought about this, but just in case...
I hope it works for you, but if it doesn't, it is likely because you need to reduce the carbs further. Some people seem to get away with eating fairly large amounts of carbs, others like me can't tolerate much at all.
This might be fine for you, but my concern would be that 50-100g per day is too much for a lot of people. That's why the best known diets (e.g. Atkins) start you off on 20g per day and only increase that once you have established that you are losing weight. Even then, they suggest reintroducing carbs carefully, one at a time, to make sure that your body (i.e. insulin response) deals with it ok.
I try to limit my carbs to 20g per day (I probably go over that a bit becuase I don't want to get too fanatical about it). I find that if the number creeps up too much, it has an immediate effect on the rate of weight loss.

This week: 2 lbs
Total: 7 lbs
An expected slowdown after week one. By the middle of last week I just felt run down and exhausted but that's not really food's fault. Only got one run in. Here's an incentive though: I was doing the paper work for life insurance and all that before Christmas. Because of my BMI, the cost has been revised up to an extra €16/month. They'll revise it down if my BMI goes down.
On the plus side, made citrus muffins with fat-free yoghurt at the weekend. They were good, and vaguely healthier than shop-bought muffins.
Getting to week three is always the hardest, especially if you stand on the scales and the weight loss has stopped. CC does help. I find I you can survive the first three weeks and push yourself into the second month, it gets easier.
Nice going, DrJ.
Have the Chubby Checker 7lb seal of approval:
been busy
but managed to lose a kilo,2.2lbs,despite a large packet of crisps yesterday.
Well done to all.
Week 0
Not really started yet as we have just opened the last Christmas tin of biscuits. Already being good at other times though.
Last Wednesday I took the plunge and weighed myself. The news was bad but not quite as bad as I feared. In an ideal world it would be good to lose 4st 7lbs, but that may not be achievable. I do really need to lose 3st 7lbs to get in to my ideal weight range. So this is going to be a long term project.
Although I haven't really started, I am 1lb down. Just a lot more to go!
Setting yourself a target you think may be unachievable
may not be the best way to start, David.
Tell yourself you want to lose half a stone. You know you can do that without too much trouble. Then set yourself a target of another half a stone. That way you constantly feel like you're achieving what you want to do, rather than thinking about how far you are from your target.
She's right
Looking at a faraway target can be miserable. The problem with weigh loss is that it doesn't correspond to our practice-reward paradigm. The more you do it, the slower you lose weight: instead of what usually happens in life when the more you do it, the better you become at it. If you lost more weight the longer you dieted, well, that would keep you going.
I think this is where exercise as part of weight loss comes into its own. Certainly in my own experience of running I found it hugely satisfactory to trace my improvement from being someone who could just go from one lamppost to the next to eventually being able to go for 5 miles. I used RunKeeper on my iPhone to track my improvement and calculate my calorie loss - other apps are available. So even as the weight loss slows you can see yourself getting better at something.
Monitoring weight loss in smaller goals is advisable. Half-stones are fine. Five pounds at a time also has a good psychology, it increases the number of goals. So losing 3.5 stone = 49lbs becomes 9x5lb goals plus a target end weight. You might get frustrated if you're only able to get past a stone for a while, but when you see it's 3 out of 9 of your goals, it has a better psychology.
Remember weight loss is almost exponential: it'll take twice as long to lose the next chunk! 5lbs gone in week one? It'll take 2 weeks to lose the next 5 and four weeks to lose the 5 after that.
Keep on trucking.
Locust week 2
Lost this week: 0,6 kg
Total loss: 1,2 kg
It's going well so far. I've walked home from work every night, I've gone completely vegetarian and I've stayed away from every temptation.
Still, I'm trying not to get too over zealous in the beginning, I'm allowing myself to eat one small treat every day and I haven't started any other exercising yet.
But in the past I've always thrown myself into the deep end at once and been very rigid and you can only keep that up for so long.
So this time I'm taking it slow at first, I can increase my efforts once I've gotten used to the regiment I'm following now.
Good idea.
I've started off slowly with a few swims and I'll gradually introduce a bit of brisk walking then build up to running. If you go mad at the start you've got no way to step things up when losing the weight gets harder.
Kram! (The only other Swedish words I know are rude ;-) )
Lefty loses
Hopefully not too late to join in the collective flab-busting. I started last Monday and can report a 3lb loss in week 1.
This week, the running starts again. Obvious tip for all those embarking on an exercise project; you need something to aim for: I've just registered for the Birmingham Half-Marathon in October. Right now, I'd need sponsoring to run to the fridge, so I've got work to do...
It's never too late to join Chubby Checkers. Welcome.
I did a half marathon a few years ago. It would be nice to get to that stage of fitness again.
Oh, and here's a tip for free: just make sure your right hand knows what the lefthand is doing.
Thanks for the tip...
... I'm sensing sniggers at the back of the classroom.
I did the half-marathon two years ago off the back of a pre-wedding Slimming World lossathon, so have an idea what it takes. Will also give me an opportunity to get through the 100s of tracks that have built up in my "Unlistened" playlist in iTunes. Concentrating on listening to new albums has seen me through many painful miles in the past!
Oddly, considering how much I love music,
I much prefer running to a soundtrack of podcasts. I think it's because it's like someone chatting to me and it seems to make the time go by more quickly than listening to songs.
We have lift off!
Or rather, weight off.
Loss This Week: 2 lbs
Total Losss: 2 lbs
After last week's non-starter, I have made some progress this week. Still not enough exercise, but the diet has improved.
Reading what others have been saying about lo-carb/hi-fat and other dieting options, I have resolved to cut back on the fruit - never mind 5 a day, I was eating about 10 a day. In the process i want to better balance my carb/fat/protein mix. So I am switching to soups for lunch, using my snazzy Cuisinart Soupmaker. Henceforth, until the level of protest/derision becomes overwhelming, I shall share with you my Soup Of The Week. This week's offering? Sweet potato, red pepper and chilli - mmm, that's nice!
The plan for this week is to move about more, before the winter arrives in earnest. Whatever happens, I know that it will be...

Comments: I suppose I'm disappointed because I had heard that people can often shift 5 or six pounds in the 1st week, but, like a draw at Old Trafford, I'll take it....
I haven't radically changed my diet, but I have changed some of my eating habits.Post 9 pm sofa snacking is out (except for Friday) This was really hard....This week no crisps or chocolate were included in the weekly shop..That was hard too....
Of course, the key is the pool... I've swum 6 out of the last seven days...My weekend sessions last 45 minutes, weekday ones usually only about 20 because as I like to go before work (I start at 8 my gym opens at 6.30 - and there's a London to cross.)
Drakey, when your speech has been delivered, you absolutely MUST get a speedo aquabeat MP3 player. This must be the 4th thtread I've evangelised this gadget on.It takes the boredom out of it and can really gee you up too: I usually listen to playlists with a combination of atmospheric stuff (Mike Oldfield, Kate Bush John Coltrane) and realm kick ass....The other morning, I was tiring a bit. (I usually do breast stroke for three lengths and then backstroke or front crawl every fourth length.. ) As I was turning to do my 4th length William It was Really Nothing came on and I PELTED it down the lane. I'd done the length by the time the line And God knows I've got to live mine came round...
And when the song below came on I even attempted the butterfly! Oh yes, the patrons of Virgin Active Acton were treated to the sight of a small whale convulsively electroshocking his way through the water......
If I can keep this up, I'll be an acceptable weight by June, though I'm told that's not usually how it works.....
Still, little steps/strokes. Little strokes.
Thanks, VG.
I've been saying for ages that I must get myself a waterproof mp3 player for swimming. Looks good. Which one have you got, Vorgon? Are the models all essentially the same (apart from amount of memory?)
Well done, by the way.
I prefer
a string quartet sat on a small boat that is being rowed alongside me. An expensive option I know, but fortunately I'm not a swimmer and so the hire charges to date have been quite inconsequential.
Speedo Aquabeat 2GB. At work now, so can't link.
Aroung 50-60 notes. There's a new version with a screen and 4 gigs, but that's closer to 120 quid.
Thanks btw, anytime my will was weak this week, I thought of what I'd say on this thread and it kinda spurred me on.
Our friends at Apple must be monitoring this blog!

Staggered, frankly. One half-hour walk all week, no gym. Massive Chinese meal with friends & 3 bottles of wine between 4 of us Friday, loads of beer and wine at Paul Carrack gig Saturday. And I lose 2lbs? This is the new diet sensation! Thing is, I've been doing this for so many years I know it'll come back to bite me in the arse this week. Hey ho - take it while its there.
Are you sure your total isn't 6lbs, niall?
Didn't you lose 4lbs last week?
Wow!
I drank more than i thought. Thank you, drakey. You are correct.

Total 1 lb since 3rd Jan
Post weigh in interview went as follows....
Wife
"How's it going then?"
Me
"harrumph!"
Cycling every day, following what I remember of Slimming World regme(lost two stone doing this before)
Reading Fat Bloke Slims by Bruce Bryson (ex of the Bill) and reduced beer to once per week with two glasses of red on a Saturday. So drinking 2 nights resting 5 rather than vice versa.
I hit 45 on Thursday so will up the ante after the birthday meal.
Better than it looks
Week 2: 0
Total: 4lbs
Actually, there was a small decrease but I'm not desperate enough to clutch at fractions of lbs yet.
I'm unfazed by this, as I see it as a consolidation of the first week's loss, much of which will have been water. I've managed to meet my cycling target, so the underlying stuff is good.
This week is more problematic though. I'm at a conference. That means breakfast lunch and dinner plus booze, for three days. I've managed to get through day 1 with a salad for lunch and an alcohol-free dinner. However, the crunch comes tomorrow morning - will I be able to resist the lure of a full English breakfast? I know I should but it is one of my favouritest things in the whole world. I am resolved to have some sort of yoghurt fruit combo instead. If I can do this, everything else will be a stroll...
Well done, Lando.
How about having yoghurt & fruit tomorrow, and having the full English the next day and maybe doing an extra bike ride at the weekend?
When I say 'full', you can always forego the rounds of toast & butter, pick scrambled or poached rather than fried eggs, and cut the rind off your bacon.
It's OK to have a treat sometimes, as long as you try and make up for it on subsequent days.
On the alcohol front - as it's a work thing, ask yourself if you really want to have a few beers there, or would you rather have some bevvies on a night out with friends? If you're limiting the amount of alcohol you drink, try to save it for a really good occasion.
Did it!
And I think I'll go for the yog tomorrow too. Feel strangely virtuous.
Nice one!
Great work.
One last tip: it's VERY easy to get downhearted when you get on the scales after a virtuous week and find you've not lost anything. Remember this is long-term. Your body fluctuates. It might show up the week after. It's what you weigh in a few months that will show that these feats of willpower are worth it.
Ok...
well I finally got on the scales, and I'm 13.3 lbs. My ideal weight would be around the 12.5 mark, but as I'm 6ft I can hide it fairly well! Although I can feel the weight!
As for food, I don't really crave chocolate or sweets, my problem is bread, especially white bread with lots of butter! (as you read this imagine Homer S saying 'mmmm white bread with butter'!). I know that it's bad for me but I get unbelievable cravings for it! Especially late at night after coming home from a gig.
For the next week I'm going to try and really be good, but I can't just cut it out in one go (can I?!). I hope to be writing next Monday that I was able to cut down from about 4-5 slices a day (brown or white) to at least 2. This will be hard!!
Delighted!

quite pleased as loss was greater than week one, and not doing much different really.
still fiercely determined, but have found it difficult especially this last weekend, when visiting my daughter in Norwich, she took us to some fab eateries, i feel i have let my guard slip a bit.
still it's a good few days till the next weigh-in , so will get back on track
