Christmas starts tonight.......

Steve Hill's picture

Tonight I will commence the playing of my Christmas i-pod playlist. Too early you say? Let me explain. My father started this tradition with my family. We would come back from the neighbourhood bonfire/fireworks party and he would drag out his Nat King Cole and Andy Williams Christmas lp’s and the whole family would sit, listen and enjoy. Sadly my father passed away when I was 15, but I always remember this part of his personality with huge joy and continued his Bonfire night tradition when I had a family. Even though my daughter is now 17, she asked me this morning “Christmas songs start tonight then.” So be as cynical as you like there is one 38 year old Welshman who will hoist a glass to his father whilst Nat begins to sing “Chesnuts roasting on an open fire....” tonight. Happy Christmas to all the posse.

I think that's rather lovely

I'll raise a glass later on.

Lovely story

but personally I'll be keeping the Christmas songs on hold until mid-December.

It's a lovely idea

I am daft for Christmas music but I force myself to hold off until 1st December - but you've got your own family tradition to keep!

See, just by mentioning I was raised in the US

is gonna start a whole new thread but really, y'all need a proper holiday somewhere in between the imaginatively named August Bank Holiday and Christmas. Something mid to late November that runs a screen against the premature Crimbo crass. So go on, lemme have it.

You've got to admit

What a great post

I think a lot of families have Christmas traditions. Mine (largely resisted by my family) is trying very hard to refute any sense of the impending celebrations until December 20th*. It all goes on way too long otherwise, and I remain generally very "bah humbug" for the entire "festive" season.

*Nothing to do with the fact that my birthday is on the 19th. Rubbish time to have a birthday. Luckily I'm not bitter about it.

My brother

can't get into Christmas until he hears The Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping on the wireless. I know it's a bit early to start this but I reckon it's one of the best festive tunes around.

Generally

Christmas talk is verboten in this household until a decent interval following the FPO's birthday in ten days time. However, we did have Christmas pudding and mince pies last Friday with all her siblings, as her brother departed for the Antarctic on Sunday, so it was the least we could do (although he will be guaranteed a white Christmas -- despite it being summer down there).

I'm going to be sick

I've already eaten half the roasted peanuts I bought for the Christmas holidays. I am also sampling my wife's sticky toffee puddings so she can decide which one to bake for the big day.

I shall finalise my annual Green Christmas CD compilaton soon - left it to the last minute last year. I will be posting it online somewhere if anyone wishes to download it. Rapidshare?
