Christmas Songs

Humphrey Plugg's picture

Inspired by Mr Hepworth's article in the new issue, but fed up of the same old Wizzard/Slade/McCartney offerings, here's a few songs I recommend to freshen up your Christmas playlists:

and, just because they have a song for every occasion (although it's not one of his finest vocal performances, it's still a great lyric)

Other suggestions gratefully received

JC

Jonathon Coulton is a geeky singer/songwriter in the US, and I think his fans make the videos. That's about all I know. Apart from loving the track.

Red Simpson!

Heard this first courtesy of the Theme Time Hour since when it has become a firm festive favourite

Fits with the time of year too

'It's almost Christmas Day in Holly Jolly Hollywood'

David Gedge manages to bring some drizzly northerness to sunny LA. It feels as if he should be driving a Morris Minor Traveller.

I was actually looking for this

Herein lies madness

Five years ago, my first Christmas in London I thought I'd send out Christmas cards for the first time and include a compilation of Christmas tunes. This has now become an annual obsession. Here's this year's tracklist:

Merry Xmas Everybody Oasis
The Christmas Song The Raveonettes
12 Days of Christmas the bird and the bee
Another Christmas Song Stephen Colbert
Must Be Santa Bob Dylan
We Wish You A Merry Christmas Weezer
Drive The Cold Winter Away Horslips
Something to Hold On to (At Christmas) Ron Sexsmith
Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) U2
Wonderful Christmas Time Mark Ronson and Daniel Merriweather
Shut Up And Let It Snow (Live On Radio 1) The Tings Tings
christmas time will soon be over jack white

Only four of these songs are on Spotify...

Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'

Although this takes a biscuit (or, looking at the video, the entire Christmas tin)

Lesser-known 70s gem...

Count Basie & The Real Tuesday Weld

Heard this last year on a Verve Remixed album...Tis a little bit different but had me hooked.Guess it's a bit marmite though and would have been nice to have a good vid with it.

for sick puppies...

Derrick Roberts' There Won't Be Any Snow (Christmas in the Jungle) is unbeatable but unfortunately it's not on youtube or spotify. It is on a compilation called Christmas Past which wanders nicely off the normal festive path.

Also love this one:
